Chapter 88: Chapter- 88
Vayu gave her a slow, sleepy smile and then bent down beside her, resting his arms on his knees.
"You see," he began, voice calm, almost too calm, "there’s... a bit of a problem between me and the Mermaid Tribe."
Kaya didn’t say anything—just stared at him, waiting.
"A few years ago," Vayu continued, "my brother disappeared. Near their territory. Just vanished. And since then... well, I’ve had this... unfinished business with them."
Kaya’s gaze narrowed. "So, what? You want me to be part of your revenge plan?"
He looked at her, eyes widening as he quickly shook his head. "No, no—nothing like that." He raised his hands, shrugging slightly. "How can you even think that?"
Then he let out a small, helpless sigh, eyes dropping to her shoulder.
"It’s just... I want you to go to the Mermaid Tribe. With me. That’s all. Everything’s already arranged," he said. "I hired a few Shark thugs to stage a small attack on the tribe—nothing big. They’re weak right now, so they’ll need help. If you go there with me, and we make a pact, then we both get what we want."
Kaya frowned. "What exactly do I get out of this?"
"You get your pure sea water," he said easily. "And I get the medicine. The herbs they have—they can heal anything. Illness, injuries... they can make a body stronger. Healthier. Like, completely clean and new."
Kaya looked at him in disbelief and scoffed. "And you think I’d agree to this?"
She stood up sharply, brushing the dirt from her hands, her expression cold.
"Listen," she said firmly, turning back to him. "I don’t care what you’re planning or what story you’re spinning. I’m not doing it. I’m not risking my life for some personal war you’ve been nursing for years."
She turned to walk away.
But Vayu’s voice came again, low and sharp.
"Do you really think your body can survive in this environment?"
Kaya paused mid-step. Her back still to him.
"What?" she muttered, slowly turning her head.
Vayu stood too, brushing off his hands. His expression was serious now. His voice quieter.
"I’ve been observing you ever since we met," he said. "And honestly... your body—it’s too weak. If this keeps up, you won’t last more than a month."
Kaya’s hand went to her side—then, without hesitation, she pulled out her knife and pointed it directly at his throat, her eyes burning.
"What do you know about my body?" she hissed. "And how do you know it?"
Her heart was racing. Her mind was already spinning with questions. Does he know? she wondered. Does he know I’m human? And if he does—why didn’t he say anything until now?
Vayu didn’t flinch. He just looked down at the blade pressed to his skin, then gently pushed it away with his pinky finger.
"I don’t know what you are," he said calmly. "But I know this much—your body is weak. Weaker than most females I’ve seen. I don’t know why, but... I can feel it."
There was no mockery in his voice. No joke.
Just quiet truth.
And that made it harder to ignore.
Hearing his words, Kaya slowly lowered her dagger.
There was no real reason to threaten him—not anymore.
Truthfully, she had nothing to argue with. She didn’t care much, even if she died here. What would it change? Like those novels she used to read, maybe she’d just wake up in her old world. Or maybe God would scatter her soul across the stars—or toss it somewhere dark and silent. Either way, she wasn’t going to heaven. She’d killed too many people, broken too many rules. She knew she wouldn’t be given some bright, shiny afterlife. And she definitely didn’t believe in reincarnation.
So no, the idea of death didn’t scare her.
And... he was right.
She had noticed it. Since she came to this world, her body had started changing in small, subtle ways. Her reflexes had dulled just a little. She was sleeping too deeply. Sometimes, her vision blurred. Sometimes, her legs trembled—not enough for others to notice, but enough for her to know something was wrong. Back in her world, she could walk miles without breaking a sweat. Here, just a few days of travel had her feeling like her legs were going to give out.
So yeah... she had already suspected it.
Kaya looked at Vayu carefully and asked, "And how exactly are you planning to get into the Mermaid Tribe? You think you just show up and they roll out a carpet? ’Oh my Lord, you’re here!’ and they just... welcome you in?"
Vayu grinned, a knowing, almost lazy smile. "Not that easy," he said. Then, with a quiet flourish, he pulled out a small pouch and held it up for her to see.
It smelled... strange.
No—pleasant. Almost too pleasant. Like something that didn’t belong in this cold, damp place.
Kaya raised a brow. "Seriously? You think something that smells nice up here is going to work underwater?" She crossed her arms. "What, the scent’s going to float through the sea like magic perfume? Are you even hearing yourself?"
Vayu chuckled. "It’s not just scent," he said, giving the pouch a little shake. "This herb is called Koro. One pinch of it is strong enough to make Shark Tribe warriors retreat—not just a little, but a hundred kilometers away. They hate it. Can’t stand the scent even in the water."
He stepped a little closer and looked her in the eyes.
"And besides," he added softly, "I’ll be with you. So even if something does happen... even if you do die—" he paused, gaze steady—"you won’t die alone."
Kaya looked at him for a long moment. Her expression unreadable.
Then, voice cool and quiet, she asked, "And I’m just supposed to believe that? What next—are you going to make a blood pact or something?"
Vayu didn’t laugh this time.
He froze.
Then he looked at her, smile softening, and gave a slow, solemn nod.
He raised his hand and whispered, "I swear it. Even in death... I will never leave you."
His palm glowed faintly with light as he finished.
"I place this vow on the Beast God."
