Chapter 77: Chapter -77

The water was cold—sharp enough to make her fingers twitch.

Yep. Cold. Of course.

She looked left, then right. No one.

But her gut said otherwise.

Now, Kaya wasn’t new to this kind of feeling. Her instincts had been through enough to know when something was off. And when a woman’s intuition decides to clock in? Oh, it’s game over. Dangerous combination, really. Like giving a lie detector machine a pair of heels and a sharp tongue.

Right now? Kaya felt like a human radar—hair on edge, skin buzzing.

She didn’t see anyone... but she felt them. Eyes. Watching. Lingering.

And not just one pair either.

Two, three—maybe more.

On the other side, the gazes that had been staring at Kaya without blinking slowly slipped beneath the water, one by one—like shadows melting into the ocean’s skin.

For the rest of the day, Kaya and the others decided to stay on the shore and take a break. Cutie and Vayu were both completely against it, of course—but Kaya didn’t care. Not even a little. In the end, she made them stay on the shore too, whether they liked it or not.

To be fair, their objections weren’t baseless. Both of them were uneasy—rightfully so. They had no idea what the sea beastmen were really like. All they’d heard were rumors... that they were ruthless, maybe even savage.

But Kaya wasn’t exactly wrong either. She’d learned a thing or two from her job, and one rule was crystal clear—if you want to lure in prey, you have to give them enough reason to come closer. Simple.

From those earlier gazes—sharp, intent, and unblinking—she had already pinpointed a direction in the ocean. And the moment she touched the water? Yeah, she knew. The sea beastmen probably already knew she was there.

After a bit of rest, Kaya casually stood up, stretched like a cat, and without warning, flung the snake—ahem, Vayu—straight into the ocean.

"Go fetch some fish, oh mighty sea serpent," she called out like she was tossing a pebble instead of a fully grown man.

Even Vayu, who usually kept his cool, was this close to losing it. His gills flared in frustration—if he had to rank the worst parts of traveling with Kaya, this would probably crack top three. But what were his choices? Catch some fish or be roasted alive by her sharp tongue and even sharper glare. Between dying with pride and surviving with slap marks, he chose life.

With a resigned sigh, Vayu dove into the waves.

Underwater, he did his job. Efficient. Deadly.

He caught five—no, six fish. But what he didn’t sign up for were the ambush slaps he got from their flailing tails. Each one hit with the precision of someone who held a personal grudge. By the time he surfaced and transformed back into his human form, holding a bundle of dripping, stunned fish, his cheeks were redder than sunset—courtesy of the ocean’s finest handfish fighters.

Kaya took one look at him and couldn’t help it—her lips twitched. Just a little.

That small flicker of amusement was like a secret relief slipping through. She didn’t say anything, of course. But Vayu noticed. He heard it in the way her breath exhaled, just a little easier than before.

He turned, eyes landing on QT with a look that said, "At least it’s the fish slapping me, not her."

That night, a fire crackled into life.

They roasted the fish over a makeshift grill of sticks, each one charred on the edges, hissing quietly as the oils dripped into the flames. Kaya sat close to the fire, knees tucked up, chin resting on top, eyes half-lidded. The aroma was thick and heavy, enough to make anyone’s stomach growl. She wasn’t thrilled, but hunger was winning. Even she had to admit—this was dinner, like it or not.

She knew what came next.

This big of a fire, this strong of a scent—there was no way the things in the sea wouldn’t notice. And right on cue, something beneath the waves stirred.

Exactly as she expected.

.

.

Deep in the ocean, fish swam freely, gliding through the cool water like they belonged to it. But even deeper—where the light barely reached—something strange and breathtaking was hidden. If Kaya ever saw it, she might have stood there frozen, too stunned to speak.

Above the sea, all she had seen were small huts and people going about their lives—some barely dressed, some covered up. Simple. Ordinary. But down here? It was like stepping into another world.

There were no houses made of wood or bricks. Instead, giant natural formations rose from the ocean floor—rounded like deep seeps or sea caves, glowing softly from within. It looked as if the ocean itself had shaped them. Seaweed swayed gently with the current, and colorful coral clung to the sides like delicate lace. There were even strange underwater plants, blooming in colors that didn’t exist on land. The place didn’t feel built. It felt alive.

And living here were fish beastmen—mermaids, as some called them. But these weren’t the fairytale ones. These were real, proud, and part of the sea itself.

Suddenly, three small shark-like creatures darted through the water, swimming fast, as if they were chasing something—or being chased. As they turned sharply around one of the glowing seeps, they slammed right into someone coming from the other side.

Bubbles exploded everywhere.

The figure they crashed into looked like he belonged to the sea and ruled it too. His lower half was a strong, glittering fishtail. His upper half was that of a man—tall, lean, and powerful. Long blue hair floated around his face, now all messed up from the hit, and a thin crown-like band rested on his forehead, slightly tilted from the impact.

He looked at the three young ones, eyes narrowing.

"Are you crazy?!"

The sharks froze mid-water, trembling slightly as they quickly bowed their heads.

"S-sorry, Lord!i..i mean...Sorry, Little Lord!" one of them stammered. "But we need to find Master. It’s urgent!"
