Chapter 66: Chapter-66

"Skraaahh..."

Another. Louder. Angrier.

It was the vultures.

Kaya gritted her teeth, her hands flying to her ears. The high-pitched cries clawed into her head, screeching like banshees tearing through the skies. It wasn’t just noise—it was communication. And though she couldn’t understand their language, the tone was unmistakable.

It was rage.

It was threat.

It was a hunt cry.

She remembered this sound from her world—vultures circling a dying animal, screeching not to scare it away, but to declare it theirs.

And now, those same shrieks filled this foreign sky.

---

Above, in the sky thick with swirling feathers and fury, Veer circled like a storm waiting to break.

In his full vulture form, his feathers ruffled with rage, golden eyes scanning every inch of the forest below.

The mammothos had ruined everything.

His plan. His timing. His control.

Now Kaya was gone—vanished like dust in the wind—and it infuriated him.

He let out another thunderous screech, the kind that sent birds scattering from trees far away.

"SKRAAAHHH!"

A warning.

A command.

A reminder of who ruled the sky.

The other vultures fluttered nervously in the air, clearly shaken. One of them cautiously flapped closer, wings hesitant, and in their guttural, vulture-like tongue, tried to speak:

"W-We searched, Veer... she’s not here. We combed the north and west... not a feather of her."

Veer turned to him with a slow, burning glare. His beady eyes were sharp and unblinking, and the air around him thickened with pressure.

The vulture shrank back midair, his wings fluttering awkwardly.

"T-Then... what the hell were you doing this whole time?" Veer growled, voice coated in venom.

"You can’t even track one girl?"

The unfortunate subordinate stumbled through the air, mumbling apologies, beak trembling.

Veer didn’t care. His eyes were scanning again, rage dripping off him like heatwaves.

He would find her.

He had to.

Suddenly, Kaya stiffened.

She could feel it—that instinctive chill crawling up her spine.

Something was near.

A soft whoosh of wings brushed the air, and then—

Thud.

A vulture landed.

Right above her.

On the very tree she was hiding in.

She went rigid, barely daring to breathe.

Cutie froze too, pressed like a trembling stone against her chest.

This hollow tree, no matter how sturdy, echoed like a drum with even the smallest movement. One shift, one whisper, and it would all be over.

Kaya slowly pressed a hand over her mouth, biting down on the edge of her glove, controlling her breath.

Above, the vulture shuffled on the branch, its claws scraping the bark. It was looking around. Watching. Listening.

Kaya waited.

One minute. Two. Five.

Each second felt like a dagger held at her throat.

Finally, the vulture gave a low grunt and flapped away, wings slicing the air, vanishing into the canopy.

Kaya let out a silent breath, her lungs aching.

But then—

Flutter. Snap. FLAP.

Another set of wings.

Her heart dropped.

She reached for her gun, her hand moving silently to her waist. Eyes sharp. Jaw clenched.

And then she saw it.

Her expression twisted.

"Damn it! What are you doing here?!"

The sparrow landed in front of her—looking like he had just been shoved into a tornado, spun dry, and tossed out again. His feathers stuck up in every direction like a startled porcupine.

"CHRRRIIIPPPPPP!"

("Ahhhh I found youuuuu!")

Tears and snot were streaming down his tiny face, staining his beak and cheeks, an absolute picture of distressed devotion.

Kaya’s eye twitched.

She lunged forward, snatched his neck gently but firmly, pulled him down into her lap, and whispered with gritted teeth,

"Listen, either you come in and shut up, or I will personally throw you to those vultures before I die. Your choice."

The sparrow’s beak snapped shut with an audible click.

He stared at her, betrayed. Completely heartbroken.

He flew all this way for her. Dodging death. Braving skies. And this cold-hearted woman dared to threaten him?

Inside, he cried even harder.

Outside, he didn’t make a sound.

Thanks to the patch of wild grass growing at the base of the old tree, Kaya’s sudden leap into the hollow hadn’t left a visible trace. If the vultures didn’t fly low enough or look directly into the trunk, there was little chance of them spotting her.

So, she stayed put.

One hour passed.

Then two.

Then three.

Time began to slip away from her. The adrenaline wore off, fatigue seeping in through her bones. Her eyes fluttered shut for just a moment, her breathing steady but shallow, Cutie curled tight in her arms, silent as a shadow. The sparrow, for once, had also tucked himself into a corner, all ruffled feathers and sulky silence.

---

Elsewhere in the forest...

Veer’s rage was at its boiling point.

Thud!

His fist slammed into the bark of a tree, cracking the surface. The veins on his neck bulged, his golden eyes sharp with fury.

"What the hell?!"

His voice echoed through the trees.

How could this woman—this damn female—vanish like mist?

His chest heaved. His wings twitched at his back, but he didn’t take to the sky. Not yet. The anger was still swallowing him whole.

If not for that snake...

If Vayu hadn’t interfered—he would’ve had her. He would’ve finally gotten his hands on that cursed thing she used to kill his brother.

Yes, curiosity burned inside Veer—but it wasn’t just that.

It was obsession.

The memory of how she had effortlessly ended his brother’s life. That image played like a curse in his mind.

He wanted to see it.

He wanted to understand it.

And he wanted to crush it.

Suddenly, another unit of vultures descended from the skies, flapping down with grim faces. As soon as they touched the ground, they shifted back to their human forms, heads bowed.

One of them stepped forward.

"We... We still couldn’t find her."

Veer’s expression darkened.

"What do you mean you couldn’t find her?!"

His roar shook the trees.

He turned and kicked a rock so hard it bounced off the forest floor and cracked against another.

He was about to turn away, ready to lash out again, when his gaze shifted.
