Chapter 34: Chapter-34.

As Kaya scanned her surroundings with sharp, alert eyes, her brows suddenly twitched. That annoying chirping... again. Left. Right. Pocket. Ugh.

She sighed deeply, yanked her hand into her pocket, and pulled out the tiny, noisy culprit—the sparrow.

Grabbing him with two fingers like he was the world’s most irritating pebble, she held him up at eye level, her jaw clenched tight.

"Listen. I’m saying this for the last damn time." Her voice was low, dangerous. "If you really don’t want me to throw you at that lion and use you as bait—then just shut. the. fuck. up."

The sparrow froze.

For a second.

And then—

"CREEEEEKKKK!!!"

(DO IT!)

The sparrow screamed loud enough to startle the birds in the trees behind them.

He was done. Finished. Cooked. Roasted.

He flapped furiously in her grip, eyes wild.

CHRIPPP CHRIP CHHHIRPP CHRIPP

( JUST DO IT, DAMN IT! THROW ME ALREADY!)

He had had it with this woman. Always blackmailing him, threatening him, grabbing him like some useless feather-duster. Every damn second she acted like she ruled the world.

He was tired.

Tired of living on the edge.

Tired of fearing for his tiny life every time she stubbed her toe or raised an eyebrow.

He was ready.

CHRIPP CHRIPP

(Do it, yaaar!) he wailed. (End me!)

But... he forgot one little thing.

Kaya?

Yeah, she wasn’t your everyday, normal female.

She stared at him—expression flat, deadpan—but a slow, eerie smile curled on her lips. She didn’t understand a word he said. Didn’t need to. His tone, the flapping, the audacity—it was enough.

She raised her hand—

took a step back—

twisted her shoulder like a pro athlete preparing a fast pitch—

And just when the sparrow saw his tiny bird-life flash before his eyes—

"WAIT!"

A voice rang out.

The rabbit—"Cutie"—had dashed forward and grabbed her wrist.

Kaya blinked.

The sparrow?

His voice dried in his throat. He turned his little beady eyes to Kaya. Her fingers were still curled around his wing.

His heart thudded.

He was actually about to be thrown.

Like. Actually. Thrown.

What the hell?!

Who knew she’d actually do it?!

Now trembling in silence, the sparrow quietly lowered his wings. For the first time in hours, he had nothing to say.

Not even a "chirp."

As Kaya turned her eyes to Cutie, her anger was so intense that it felt like it crackled in the air around her. Even Cutie, usually bold and playful, took a few steps back in fear.

"I—I didn’t mean anything bad," he stammered, voice trembling. "I just... you’ve taken care of that sparrow for so long. If you throw him away now, you might regret it later. It’ll hurt you."

His voice softened as he spoke, his words slowing down like he was unsure of himself. By the end, he had dropped his eyes to the ground, speaking quietly. "I just don’t want you to feel pain later..."

But Cutie wasn’t stupid. Just by looking closely at that little sparrow—and the quiet snake that Kaya always kept with her—he could tell what they really were. Beastmen. Just like him. And from the way Kaya acted... it seemed like she had no idea.

That part confused him the most.

How could she not know? Beastmen usually sensed each other, even without thinking. It was instinct. You felt them. So how could she be so close to two of them and still treat them like regular animals?

Still, he decided not to overthink it. Kaya was strange in many ways—maybe this was just another mystery about her.

What mattered more right now was the idea of her actually throwing the sparrow away. That thought left a weird, uncomfortable feeling in his chest. He wasn’t worried for the sparrow. Not really. He was thinking about Kaya.

What if she did it in a burst of anger and later regretted it?

What if it reminded her of something painful?

He didn’t want that. He didn’t want anyone to become a memory that hurt her.

Cutie had long decided that the only man Kaya should think about—if she had to—he wished it to be the one who make her happy. That one would be enough.

(For notes: Cutie is someone who’s obsessed with fluffy and cute things—even though he himself is a cute rabbit. But anyway, and right now, the sparrow in its small and fluttery form is just meeting his criteria.)

Kaya stared at Cutie for a long moment.

Her fingers still gripped the sparrow tightly, mid-air, frozen between fury and hesitation. The little bird stopped flapping the moment Cutie’s soft voice reached her ears. His words weren’t anything grand, just simple, trembling honesty. But they hit her in a place she didn’t want to admit existed.

Regret...?

She frowned.

She hated the word. Hated how real it felt

Caring about this loud-mouthed bird? Please. If she had even a flicker of fire left in her, she would’ve already roasted him—feathers, beak, and all.

The only reason he was still alive was because she didn’t have fire handy. Not because she cared.

But after hearing Cutie’s words, something clicked in her head.

Wait.

She froze for a second, her grip on the sparrow loosening just a little.

She was about to throw him away.

Her emergency food.

Her face twitched.

"Damn it," she muttered under her breath.

What a fucking foolish move.

The sparrow stared at Kaya, trembling. No—shaking. From head to feathered toe.

He was sure of it now.

This woman... she wasn’t human. She was a devil. No, not just any devil—the devil. The reincarnation of some ancient demon lord sent to torment small, helpless birds like him. He knew it in his bones. His tiny, hollow-boned body screamed it in terror.

And as Kaya looked down at him, something flickered in her gaze. Not pity. Not amusement.

Just... thought.

She sighed.

Two completely different visions overlapped in her head now. One: food ration. That was straightforward. Rational. Logical. And two: something weird was going on here.
