Chapter 340: You Would Be The One To Rescue Me
[KAWAI]
"One. Give me just one reason why I should not kick you out of this palace," Lord Sadako sighed defeatedly as he stared at the two idiots, one of whom had summoned him and the other who looked like he wanted to be everywhere but here.
"I can explain," King Zaffuto began but the glare he got from Sadako instantly got him shutting up and turning to his son who was looking at him for help. How the fuck was he supposed to when they had gotten into this because of him?
"Tamiko," the Lycan Lord spoke, his glare reminding Tamiko that he was already into much trouble to even be thinking of the way his uncle, the man who had never once called him by his Grealor-given name, was suddenly using it casually like it had been their norm for years.
"Papa wanted to say hello," the kid replied sheepishly.
"I see you have too much time on your hands, aye," Lord Sadako said as he looked disappointedly at his brother, who was covered in the duct from all the boxes he had been moving while looking for HER chess board.
It was not supposed to be this hard, but trouble had called already and there was no other way for the king and his dear prince this time anyway; unless they played another game, which was not even comforting at this point either way.
"We are about to play chess, but Papa is taking too long instead of conjuring a chess board so this can start," Tamiko spoke.
Sadako ran a frustrated hand down his face as he tried to think of why in any universe the kid would summon him frantically for help.
"He called me old," the king accused.
"He forgot the question I asked and I asked if he has Alzheimer’s."
"Ah, Hinata, ah," Sadako groaned and the two Hinatas looked at him with soft eyes, like they were trying to figure out which one of them the Lycan Lord had gotten tired of. Surely it couldn’t be both of them, no?
"What question did you ask?" Sadako asked defeatedly, clearly not wanting to stay in this room any longer with the idiots that were staring at him and putting like that was supposed to influence his decision on both of them this early.
"How many games he wanted us to play and win before he trained me for war," Tamiko whispered and the Lycan Lord just stared at him disbelievingly. He was now sure that these two would be the death of him if he wasn’t careful.
"And?" Lord Sadako sighed.
"Well, I wanted him to—" Tamiko began but he was interrupted by his uncle.
"Shuten... how many games?" Sadako breathed tiredly.
He was so done with these two but he figured that leaving without resolving whatever the fuck this was, would just result in him being summoned sheepishly over and over until the day ended. And he didn’t have the patience for that today.
"I haven’t gotten the chess board that I want, so I can’t know the number of games we have to play," Zaffuto said earnestly and for a moment, Sadako’s breath caught in his chest.
He knew there was only one chess board that was so complicated that wins and losses always got confused in the games. It was not an easy one and it was not bound by the regular rules, which made it even harder.
And if Zaffuto was looking for it, right when his son was in his presence, then it had to mean that maybe, the man was finally ready to open that Chapter of their lives that he had tucked away for twenty-six years.
It had been the hardest of times for the Lycan king and if Sadako was being honest, this was the first time he was glad he had been summoned by the Hinatas for very stupid reasons.
Because no matter how dumb the two idiots looked at the moment, it was what they were about to do, what this would lead to, and what this would trigger that mattered.
And just like that, the Lycan Lord was no longer angry with them or even frustrated. Instead, he got up and walked towards his brother, ready to help with whatever the fuck he was looking for, because this time, the hope was not just in Sadako’s mind.
It was not just an illusion that he had prayed for for twenty-six years.
It was real.
It was something that was worth noting and paying attention to, and hells be damned if they stopped looking no matter how long it took them this time.
"I’ll help," Sadako offered with a tone of finality.
Zaffuto looked at him, almost confused, before he saw the look of realization in his brother’s eyes.
This was what he had seen Sadako wait for for years and even though this was a moment for him and Tamiko to bond, Zaffuto couldn’t deny this for his brother. He couldn’t be that cruel.
"Wow, I call for help and you help the Alzheimer’s patient, just great, uncle," Tamiko pouted and Sadako let out a soft laugh. It was almost relieving and that was also how Tamiko knew that there was more to this.
He may have known that his father and Sadako had been inseparable and bound by history for so many years, but he also knew that at the end of the day, good things happened when these two teamed up.
However, he couldn’t help but feel that this sudden team-up was not because of the happiest of memories.
But Tamiko wasn’t going to let himself wonder and linger in that line of thought because if he did, he would ask questions. Questions that would be valid, but also questions that would trigger a past that no one was ready to face just yet.
"It’s either that, or he will need an admission, kid," Sadako said.
Tamiko snickered, making King Zaffuto glare at them both. He was definitely not liking any of this, or maybe, he liked it a little too much that he didn’t know where to start, right?
But even then, this was going to be their new normal for a while, as they struggled to unpack everything that related to the massacre that had robbed them of what their lives could have been.
It would be a lot to take in, but at least they were not dealing with it all on their own, yeah?
"In that case, don’t catch his disease," Tamiko teased and the king just shook his head, before he and Sadako began unpacking the boxes, looking for something which could have them hoping for real this time.
And so, in silence, Tamiko watched as his father and uncle looked for the chessboards like they were a precious set. He watched them put aside hundreds of boards like there was a particular one they needed.
And he watched as relief flooded their dusty faces, hours later, when they finally got what they wanted. It was almost like they had gotten the grand prize, and Tamiko could have sworn he had never seen the look of relief that he saw then on his father’s face.
"Here, hold onto this, and master the board while getting ready to be bested, ha," the king said.
Sadako chuckled at his brother’s mischief.
"LNH?" Tamiko asked when he saw the initials on the board.
"Liana Nakamura Hinata," Zaffuto breathed.
Tamiko whimpered.
