Chapter 278: Hit Me With Your Best Shot, Honey [4]
[ZULA]
"You have so much faith in me, Lili," Zaffuto said to the woman before him. He had never had someone trust him that much, it felt like he was about to be suffocated by her fiction but at the same time, he wanted to see for himself what this would be.
He wanted to explore and experience whatever the fuck life was offering him with her. He wanted to see where the lines would get cut and if otherwise, he wanted to see what the future looked like for the both of them.
He wasn’t a man of hope ever, but here with his Erasthai so close to him, Zaffuto dared to have a silent wish that would probably have him on his knees if he wasn’t very careful.
"Someone has to, angel. Besides, beyond all that you have hovering around you, I know you are a good person," Liana said.
Zaffuto stilled.
No one had ever looked at him differently other than Sadako. And now the woman he was forced to marry was here smiling at him when he was covered in blood and there wasn’t an ounce of fear in her as she stayed close to him.
It was almost like this was the part of life that he had never had to worry about and the part that had him excited for what the future held.
Maybe all he had to do was wait it out, but what were the chances of them never working out? Or maybe it was because the realm was already plotting against him now that he had a certain weakness, right?
"You’re not scared of me," Zaffuto mumbled in disbelief. He had expected this, but what she was doing was so different. She was handling being hit by an invisible threat that could easily be cut and yet he didn’t want the cord to break.
He was just there because of her, for her, and for whatever chao she was trying to rope him into. Perhaps it made him a weak man or her his greatest weaned. Whatever the hell it was, Zaffuto wasn’t complaining, not even once.
"You haven’t given me a reason to," Liana responded in earnest and that was true. The King may have been the worst of the worst., but he had never done a thing to make Liana feel threatened.
Sure, he may have thrown words at her about what he would do to eliminate her, but she never took him seriously so that wasn’t even considered a threat. With him, she always felt free, like a bird whose wings had just begun to grow.
She was good for him and he had done his very best to make the realm better for her. He had protected her in the only way he could. He had cared for her in a way that no one would understand for a long time, and that didn’t seem to bother him.
Maybe this was what life would look like for the both of them in their coming future, but maybe this was the night that was meant to brighten the realm that the mad king had ensured was so dark that even the fates hadn’t been able to handle.
He was not the best of the best out there and she certainly wasn’t going to start acting like he was a threat to her when in reality, he had been forthcoming with her. He cared and that was frankly all that mattered to her.
’She’ll either be my greatest love or my worst heartbreak, fuck,’ Zaffuto thought to himself as he cast a cleansing spell to clear him of the stench of blood off of him.
He couldn’t see himself tainting her with blood, and now that the wolves were already making a run back to their homes and with their survivors, he couldn’t help but be sure that she had the greatest impact on him.
There was never going to be a day when he didn’t think of the endless effects she had on him. For someone so tiny, she had managed to control a man so huge and make him into something no one recognized.
Perhaps it was because none of them had expected that she would be that impactful to him, or maybe it was because she was the anomaly they all had expected and one that they had to either braces off or embrace.
Either way, she was the key to the monster that horrified monsters in their realm.
"Let’s go home, Lili," Zaffuto said eventually and Liana smiled earnestly at him.
She had been waiting for this moment for the longest time. It had taken her an hour to manage to convince him and frankly, she couldn’t deny that her efforts were finally paying off.
She was glad, however, that the mad king had ears that listened. Liana was intelligent enough to know that this night would have gone sideways real fast and yet here she was standing in front of the king, alive and well.
She was his bane, and for the first time, he wasn’t opposed to having what seemed like a weakness beside him. He would be there for her. He would do whatever the fuck was needed for her.
Maybe that was the beginning of his downfall, but what if it was the start of his rise? Would it ever matter?
"Finally," the Lycan queen said, giggling sheepishly like the madman was someone worthy of her time. She didn’t hate him, so that was certainly something to be glad about.
Her relationship with Zaffuto was one for the trenches and yet she didn’t even seem so bothered by the possibility that it was a fucked up one. All she cared for was that they would figure it out together.
And with the way the king was giving in, there was a future for them... if only it was that simple.
"You looked so damn beautiful today," Zaffuto commented as he carried her bridal style, and walked home with her. He loved the way that she was calm, and trusted him, almost like she was certain that he was her home.
Maybe it was the little truth, but they didn’t have to be strong against each other. As long as there was a way for them, they would try to make it work. After all, this was their chance at a balanced reality, wasn’t it?
"No portal?" Liana asked curiously as the king led them away from the free lands. She had been stubborn the first time with the portals and perhaps it was hilarious that he was asking that of him.
However, he didn’t seem to think too much of it, and it was interesting.
"Maybe I just want to fight the mosquitoes on your behalf," the king responded sheepishly as if there was even a chance that he would unto the protection spell around here. She was never going to be alone, that much he was certain of.
"Well, if it’s any consolation, I will always fight for you," Liana said drowsily before she let sleep take her while the king stared at her limbless body in his arms. He wanted to say something, to wake her when they got to the place so she could eat.
But she had a feeling that she was way too tired.
As long as she was around him, he would take care of her.
That in itself was a promise he made aside from the fact that he was falling for her.
