Chapter 133: Now Hush Little Baby Don’t You Cry [1]

[TAMIKO]

Kosta’s words rang in Tamiko’s head as he watched his father hopelessly lying on the mat in the tent. He looked sick, like this was the man’s last straw at whatever was left of his life, and Tamiko felt his heart shatter for his father.

The young prince could tell that the mad king had only come so he could make sure that Tamiko was okay and for a moment Tamiko wondered why his father was so adamant about it all.

He understood that the Kawai people needed their King, and they had waited for long years for him. Any king would always choose his people without so much as a second thought.

But just like Kosta had said, the mad king, was a father.

He was the father who had so many things to make up for. He was the father who wanted to tell his son that he didn’t need to fight anymore. He was the father who had done whatever he could to spend time with his son.

The Lycan king had done everything he could to make it possible for his son to love him and while Tamiko knew him as a good friend, King Zaffuto wanted his son to know him as a father.

"Do you think he will wake up, Kosta?" a tired Tamiko asked as he stared at his father. It had been three minutes since they had fixed him up and the big bad king was not showing any signs of regaining consciousness despite his mark turning blue again.

Tamiko wanted to assume that his father was slowing down his healing process but that wasn’t it and even he knew it. The king had been out there parading as someone else and now where he was with his son who wasn’t sure what the fuck was going on.

It was a long gamble for him and no matter how things turned out for them, there was no sign that life is not going to be the same for the longest time.

"He is the king, my soul. He has to wake up. Without him, Kawai is doomed. I don’t mean to put any pressure on you, but love is the reality that is with us. Kawai has only ever been strong because of the king. He gave us a home, a palace where we were heard.

"His Majesty may have been cruel to everyone, but deep down, we all knew that the rules he set up were meant to keep us safe. He was bad, but the good he had for us made us feel like we deserved to live.

"He made us live lives that were worth it; your father gave us all Lycans a reason to keep pushing, especially after the massacre years ago. Sure, he locked himself in the castle, but we knew he was always watching.

"Even at his weakest, no one dared to attack Kawai. It wasn’t because they didn’t want to come at us. Kawai has the greatest number of enemies there ever are. The fact that the king was there, lingering around, defending us even with his silence, was enough.

"At first most of us thought he was just playing games when the massacre happened but when he joined us and let the queen be laid alongside the Kawai women who had fallen, we all knew he felt our pain and would always be watching over us.

"We knew that he was always our guardian. He gave us strength, courage, and the ability to live like normal Lycans. Most of us were always looked at differently because Lycans are ferals by nature.

"Our first instinct is always to kill, but the king gave us a reason not to. He had us attend classes on how to control our instincts. He made us human and wanted to be part of society again.

"And when the gates of Kawai opened to let out the Lycans to mingle in the free lands, we knew what he expected of us. He was our guardian angel because even out of Kawai, in the one place that we could be attacked and forced to be feral.

"Our king gave us a reason to keep on going. So, he just can’t not wake up. He can’t not be there for us. He gave us life and hope. He taught us things that no one would ever understand.

"He was our savior in ways more than once and if he decided to tell us to go to war, the entire kingdom would pick up arms without thinking twice," Kosta explained earnestly and Tamiko looked at his erasthai softly.

What he was hearing from his erasthai was different from what the books had said about the king of Kawai. The books had destined him as a terrible king, a man who thirsts for blood, and a monster who didn’t know what it meant to love.

The books had talked of the king as someone who didn’t care about his people and the most selfish of them all. They had turned his father into the monster that many had long learned of.

The books sold a different version of the king, a version so damaged and unhinged that even the realm should have intervened. But what would the fates do other than wait for time to work it out?

"But then books," Tamiko whispered as he looked at his unconscious father. He was the one man the books had described as the worst of them all. He was the monster that no one was supposed to go close to.

They had talked of the king as the crazed Lycan who didn’t know what life was and who knew nothing about the value of love. They had made him into an unlovable creature that deserved to be hanged until he finally gave out.

Oh, the books were cruel to his father.

"You loved him, from just reading the books, my soul. You wanted to know him, despite what the books had said about the mad king. You could have run, and not come back given what he always does to the feral Lycans.

"You could have got your freedom from Grealor and lived away from Kawai and ever looked back but you didn’t. You did whatever you had to, just to know him. Even when he barked the first day, you were not scared of him, even when the shadow of darkness lingered over him, you wanted to be there.

"You wanted to hold his hand and tell the world that he wasn’t as bad. That he was just a grief-stricken man who never hurt anyone. He was always in his chambers, breaking things, not eating, ruining things mourning his erasthai, and hoping that his heir would someday be found.

"He was always hoping, praying, and thinking of what it would be like... don’t get me wrong, my beautiful. I understand how angry you are with him. Hell, if I was the heir and it took them this long to find me, I would be mad too.

"But everything always happens for a reason. Sadako always told us to look for the prince on the lowkey, because the sign was not in the right mind to loom for the heir. I had asked why, and Lord Sadako said there was only one thing in the king’s mind.

"...Death to everyone he interacted with regardless of their innocence," Kosta admitted softly.
