Chapter 103: And When That Love Comes Back...

"Are you sure you are okay?" Tamiko asked not sure what he was supposed to say. The king clearly could tell that the conversation was getting a little uncomfortable for his son, which wasn’t his intention. He was just happy that his son was back home.

"If you recommend me to the asylum again, I’m taking you with me there," the king said with a pout, and Sadako snorted. He wasn’t sure what was happening here but seeing Tamiko smile at Zaffuto’s statement got his heart at ease.

"No one is taking anyone to an asylum. We are preparing for the annual mating celebration and the king chose you and Chief Konstantin to headline the celebrations," the Lycan Lord said and Tamiko froze.

However, before Tamiko or even Kosta could say anything, the king spoke.

"It doesn’t mean that you are going to go public with your mate bond if you don’t want to. We won’t pressure you. We just want familiar faces there, and given I wish to attend the celebration for the first time in almost three decades;

"I was hoping you both wouldn’t mind. It is okay if you say no, and I’m not saying this as the king, but as your friend... you consider me that, right, Hinata?" the king said, asking the last bit in a low voice.

Ever since the Lycan king had found out about his son, it was safe to say that the great Zaffuto – the man who never cared about anyone’s feelings for Sadako and Liana – had changed a lot.

The king could think of what to say, and even rehearse what it would be like when he met his son again. It had been his wish from the first time he saw the kid, and now two weeks into that he was still adjusting.

It was impressive really, how careful he was with his son, and how delicate their relationship was. Funny how the son was doing the same with his father. They both didn’t know where the limits lay with each other.

However, for Tamiko, it was safe to say that the history books about Zaffuto the dark king had given him a hint of what to expect of his father. It wasn’t like the son was judging, but with all that history to back the claims, he still needed to be careful with Zaffuto.

"Of course. Having a king for a friend is the best thing I ever landed. Anyway, are we going to stand out here in the sun or are we going to help with the celebration preparation then?

"Or we can come join after the bounty hunting. Kosta was to show me how it goes, so maybe we can go hunting and come back, to join you right?" Tamiko asked as he looked at Kosta. He knew his mate was the Lycan chief and had things to do.

Tamiko had promised that he wouldn’t come between Kosta and his work. He refused to be the mate who made their partner irresponsible in the name of love. Sure, Tamiko was the Lycan prince but then it wasn’t formal anywhere.

They had to receive the customs and follow everything as was expected of them. And in a kingdom like Kawai that ran on responsibilities and commitments to making the kingdom a better place and protecting their people, Tamiko didn’t want to be the thorn.

"About that... the bounties will be postponed since the entire realm knows the Lycans are having the annual mating ceremony. The wolves already had theirs and it is our turn. The rules of the land forbid any hunting in that period.

"That is because we have to make sure that the mates meet each other. All the factions will have a chance to be in Kahwa For the week of the mating, even though most of the time it is Lycans getting Lycan mates.

"The ceremony allows inclusivity and reminds the factions that beyond the horrible and inhumane reputation we have, we are loyal to our mates first then the kingdom second. So don’t worry, Hinata.

"You guys won’t have to go bounty hunting for another week," Sadako explained in depth, and Tamiko felt like this was so impromptu. There were signs of people being busy in the kingdom, but then he was smart enough to know that this wasn’t it.

The Lycans sure did have their mating festivals after the wolves, but that was in three months. There was still a lot of time left for that and Tamiko couldn’t think it was right to do this so suddenly.

"But that is supposed to be in two months from now?" Tamiko asked, clearly not understanding shit, and Kosta held his hand, as if to remind him that they were before the royals and so much could go wrong.

"This is because the king came out after twenty-five years. That makes it a very special occasion and everyone would love to be a part of that, given some of them are skeptical that the king might go back to the palace for years.

"It also gives us the chance to hope that maybe the lost prince will make it back home now that his father is out there. We didn’t expect much, but the king is our hope, and perhaps just this time, the goddess would be kind to us," Kosta explained.

Tamiko watched keenly as the king listened to Kosta’s explanation. There was a glint in the king’s eyes, something that Tamiko couldn’t quite place. He wanted to think that the king was also hoping to see his son again, but what were the chances?

"Well, in that case, I really hope you find your son, your highness. I know I don’t know much about the kingdom, but if you met Toshiro, he could help you out. He looked like a good guy and was well-conversed with everyone.

"You will definitely need his people skills if you hope to find your son in the crowd that will come," Tamiko said and Lord Sadako let out a fit of coughs, while the king stared at everything except for the kid before him.

Kosta on the other hand wasn’t sure what to do, so he just stood there like a statue, holding his Erasthai’s hand in the hope that Tamiko wouldn’t let go. He wasn’t sure what the fuck would happen really, especially since Toshiro never existed in the first palace.

Would they explain to the kid that Toshiro was just the humane part of the dark king and that he had merged with the king’s dark side to give them the king who was before them or would there be a better explanation?

"Wait, you saw Toshiro last time, uncle. You should introduce the two," Tamiko added, not paying attention to the coughs around him. He wanted to know if Toshiro would be able to point him out in the middle of the Lycan festival.

He wanted to tell him after he was here, and alive, that he was not dead and that he was happy to be home, but he couldn’t. And the only chance for him to come out freely to his father was with the help of Toshiro.

"Well, that is a good idea, but Toshiko already traveled south. He’s been with us for over thousands of years, so when the king came out, he figured that he could leave and go somewhere else," Lord Sadako explained and Tamiko felt his heart shatter.

He hadn’t even been thinking of this and now that he remembered the only person who could make this all enter, he was gone. This wasn’t really fair to him and his father, and Tamiko sighed defeatedly.

Tamiko wished he could find Toshiro on his own, but there was something in Sadako’s time that told him that Toshiro would never come back to this side of the realm. Or maybe he had done something to wrong the crown?

"I’m sorry, but did he say why? Or did he wrong the king? I can take his punishment if ever there is one. Just... bring him back, please," Tamiko pleaded and Kosta simply held his mate in silence hugging him while the king ran a finger roughly through our hair.

King Zaffuto didn’t imagine that Tamiko would be that attached to Toshiro, and for the first time, he felt like he had taken something from his son. Was he a bad father for wanting to be there fully for him?

"I’m so sorry, son," the King whispered, and this time, Tamiko heard him.
