Chapter 88: Stealing the show
The wolf’s movements were erratic and abnormal. It was almost as if it was drugged, but its ferocity was undeniable.
Without hesitation, Han Xin leapt to his feet, water splashing around him as he unsheathed his sword. The wolf lunged at him, and Han Xin met its attack with a swift, practised strike.
Despite his years of training since the day he could walk the wolf’s unpredictable aggression caught him off guard. It fought with a wild intensity, and in the struggle, its fangs sank into his arm, turning the water around them crimson.
Enraged, Han Xin fought the wolf until it was limping and struggling to get up. Just as he was about to deliver a death blow, a figure appeared out of the mist. Peng Xiu came to save the day, swooping right when the wolf was too injured to put up a fight.
Clad in a flowing white silk dress, she descended like a beautiful fairy, moving with grace and determination. With a swift motion, she plunged her dagger into the wolf’s neck, ending the battle in an instant.
Xiang Yu snorted thinking Han Xin wouldn’t be stupid enough to fall for this trick. That was an old trick the young men in their town would use to get the ladies they liked. Fake an attack, then swoop in to save the day, and she falls in love with you. It was simple math.
Han Xin, breathing heavily, looked up at Peng Xiu with gratitude. "Thank you," he managed to say, his voice so sensual that it made Peng Xiu weak at her knees.
Peng Xiu smiled softly, her eyes reflecting concern. "You should be more careful, Xin-ge. Not every enemy can be defeated by strength alone." She pretended to provide words of wisdom before conveniently fainting and falling into his arms.
She pretended to be a delicate flower that had exhausted all its strength. He carried her back to the camp with the relationship between them taking a step forward in a favourable direction.
As the dream faded, Xiang Yu woke up, and he couldn’t help but chuckle. What brainless show was this? The script was definitely conjured by an amateur.
A sinister smile curved his lips. He was fully aware that this was all Peng Xiu’s plan executed by her subordinates hanging around in the shadows. Peng Xiu was what one would describe as an ultimate opportunist. She had played the hero to get closer to Han Xin. But Xiang Yu wasn’t about to let her have that advantage. He would rob her of the opportunity.
He took the bowl of medicine the twins had brought for him. They must have returned earlier but didn’t want to disturb his sleep. The temperature of the medicine was just right. He gulped it down in one go. The bitterness barely registering as he got up.
He straightened his robe and quietly slipped into the night like a shadow. The forest, though not thick, seemed darker without the moon’s guiding light. Xiang Yu followed the trail as in the dream, avoiding the active camp where soldiers were chatting around the campfire.
From where he was, he could even hear Lian and Mei arguing about something silly like always. His hand brushed against the hilt of a sword he had picked up along the way.
The rocky path led him closer to the hot spring. There, in the shifting shadows, Han Xin was standing by the steaming water, his silhouette powerful. His robe slipped down from his shoulders revealing his distinct butterfly bone.
Xiang Yu snorted before walking away. Peng Xiu’s mercenary didn’t know she had been replaced so they must still be following them and proceeding as planned. Xiang Yu wouldn’t even be surprised if she had spies in the regiment.
He needed to find that wolf before it attacked Han Xin. A wolf wouldn’t even be a problem for Han Xin to deal with and Peng Xiu must have known that. She needed to control two variables, which were the strength of the wolf and making sure that it was drawn to Han Xin when he was alone.
Peng Xiu instructed them to drug the wolf with an addictive substance. When starved, its aggression would heighten, and it would look for its next fix.
This meant someone had either planted the substance near the hot spring, knowing that the general was going there, or they planted it on him in advance. As Xiang Yu moved silently through the underbrush, his gaze swept the darkness, searching for the pair of red eyes.
Meanwhile, Han Xin’s senses prickled as his robe slipped down his arms. The mist clung to his skin, and he paused, glancing toward the shadows. There, in the darkness, he felt an inexplicable presence, like a whisper against his consciousness. But when he turned, there was no one. Perhaps it was a trick of the night but he could swear he heard someone snort.
A sudden thought crossed his mind making his body tense. What if Peng Xiu couldn’t resist the urge to peep at him like a pervert? If so, then how could he not sense her presence in advance? It’s not Peng Xiu was trained in the art of martial arts, so how could she move undetected, especially in his presence? The idea was so ridiculous that he almost laughed at himself.
Shaking off this ridiculous thought, Han Xin continued, easing into the steaming water. The heat enveloped him, soothing his muscles, and he closed his eyes. His eyes might have been closed but his senses remained heightened.
Meanwhile, Xiang Yu moved silently through the forest, and his demeanour transformed. Gone was the friendly facade. Now he wore the mantle of a Demon King. His steps were deliberate, each footfall stealthy. The trees hid him, their branches concealing his figure.
His grip tightened on the sword hilt his eyes narrowing. He sensed the wolf nearby, its malevolence echoing his own. His breath mingled with the night air, his true aura as the demon king seeping through. It was a silent warning to all who dared cross his path.
The forest held its breath as Xiang Yu crouched under the massive boulder. The wolf, its eyes crazed and fur bristling, stood on top of the boulder, circling agitatedly like it was ready to tear someone’s flesh to
