Chapter 79: Kneeling before the goddess of marriage and childbirth
Yi Nuo stepped forward, trying to reason with them. If she let the monks take her highness without the general’s approval she might get into trouble. Before he left, he had specifically instructed her to have someone keep an eye on her.
She had someone watching her yesterday, but this morning, she assumed that Princess Xiu would wake up later. Who would have thought she would wake up before the sun even rose?
She didn’t even know that the princess had left the military camp until now. "Please, allow me to take her place or we can wait for the general to return," she offered.
Mei and Lian felt guilty. They knew that their master was doing it for them. Their master could go for a long time without eating meat and did all of this for their sake. They stepped in front of their master and spoke up. "We will take her place," they insisted, their voices filled with hostility. This was their master. Did these bald donkeys think that they would let them take him away?
But the monks were unmoved. "No one else will suffice," the lead monk said firmly. He despised such people who used their power to get out of consequences. Even if it was the emperor himself, he would have to pay the price.
Xiang Yu raised a hand, signalling for them to stand down. He was the one who killed the wild boar so he naturally accepted the consequences. "I will accept the punishment," he said calmly. He then leaned in to whisper to Lian and Mei, "Stay here and save me the best piece." The twins weren’t too happy about this, but they couldn’t go against their master’s decision.
With a composed demeanour, he followed the monks, his steps steady and resolute. Yi Nuo watched them go, her mind racing. She quickly dispersed the crowd, then turned to a skilled mercenary standing nearby. "Follow them discreetly," she ordered. "Ensure the princess’s safety." The mercenary nodded and slipped into the shadows, his presence almost undetectable.
Yi Nuo then turned to Lian and Mei who seemed quite upset. She leaned down to their eye level, her expression reassuring. "Don’t worry," she said softly. "We will make sure she is safe. You don’t have to be anxious." The twins nodded, their concern evident.
Lian was so upset that she was looking for a way to vent all her frustration. She stormed off, and Mei followed after her, trying to calm her down. They soon reached the clearing where the wild boar was hanging from a sturdy tree branch, its lifeless body swaying gently in the breeze.
The group of soldiers were gathered around chatting and making jokes. They had already begun working on the boar while talking about how a fragile princess managed to take down a wild beast. When the twins approached, the group fell silent, a little perplexed.
Lian had on an ugly expression her blood boiling. She was consumed by the thoughts of the injustice her master had suffered at the hands of the monks. She picked up one of the sharp knives from the basket, its blade glinting in the sunlight.
A brawny soldier, his arms crossed over his broad chest, let out a hearty laugh. "Little girl, be careful or you will cut yourself with that," he mocked, his voice dripping with condescension. The other men laughed finding it amusing. She was so scrawny like the wind would blow her away at any second.
Mei who was standing beside her sister, folded her arms across her chest and smiled knowingly. She couldn’t wait to see the expressions on their faces when they witnessed Lian’s skill. A lot of people had fallen prey to her adorable appearance only to realise that they had grossly underestimated her.
Without a word, Lian stepped forward, her movements swift and precise. The knife danced in her hands as she expertly skinned the wild boar, her hands moving with practised ease. The soldiers watched in stunned silence, their laughter dying in their throats as they realised the extent of her abilities.
In a matter of minutes, she had not only skinned the boar perfectly but also removed its organs with a surgeon’s precision, leaving the carcass clean and ready for cooking. The brawny soldier’s jaw dropped, his eyes wide with disbelief.
Whenever that blade moved, it gave him the illusion that she was slicing through his throat, making his skin crawl. She was like a butcher and he was the peace of meat on the chopping block.
"How... how did you do that?" he stammered, unable to hide his astonishment. Lian wiped the blade clean and handed it to one of the soldiers, her expression calm and composed. "Leave the best cut for my master," she replied simply, her voice steady. Mei’s smile widened as she watched the soldiers’ reactions. It never got old.
While the Lian was showcasing her disturbing talent, Xiang Yu was being led through the grand gates of the temple like he was about to get sacrificed. The temple was a masterpiece with towering columns adorned with intricate carvings of mythical creatures and deities. The roof was gilded, catching the sunlight and casting a golden glow over the entire structure.
The head monk, dressed in a simple robe, led him through a pathway lined with lanterns that swayed gently in the breeze. He led him to a serene garden, its ground covered in pristine white pebbles that crunched softly underfoot.
In the centre of the garden stood a statue of the deity. It was a serene figure of Yu Ming, symbolising marriage and fruitful childbearing. Her hands were outstretched in a gesture of blessing as though beckoning Xiang Yu into her arms.
His voice calm and reverent, the monk turned to her, ready to educate this princess. Stroking his long beard he said, "This is the garden of the goddess of marriage and fertility, Yu Ming... the deity your Highness disrespected. It is said that those who seek her favour must prove their devotion."
He gestured to a large incense stick, its base thick and sturdy, planted firmly in the ground. He let out a rattling cough clearing his throat before continuing to say, "Your Highness must kneel on the white pebbles until the incense stick burns out. Only then will the goddess consider forgiving your transgressions."
