Chapter 68: The spoilt princess
Han Xin gestured for her to continue, his eyes sharp and attentive. "What does she want?" Han Zhan sat up straight curious to know. Was she going to complain about the tent being small or that there were so many bugs? Which one would it be?
"The princess has settled into her tent, but she... she is asking for a change in clothes for her and her maidservants," Yi Nuo began, choosing her words carefully. Han Xin’s brows arched. This couldn’t be all she wanted. This wasn’t his first time dealing with royalty. From the dirt in the soil to the summer heat and food, they would complain about everything.
"Clothes? That’s all she wants? Are you sure?" asked Han Zhan even more curious than his cousin. Princess Xiu might have been raised outside the palace but where she grew up was just as comfortable with plenty of servants. The deposed empress wasn’t stripped of all her luxuries because of her father’s contributions to Yige so Princess Xiu should have been spoilt rotten.
Han Zhan was right. She was spoilt but the Princess Xiu right now was the Demon King Xiang who had endured suffering for half his life. He had even slept in a crate in an alley once when his mother chased him out for buying the wrong rouge.
"She seemed content with the accommodations and she sent her maidservants to follow me to get some clothes," she reported.
Han Zhan chuckled softly, still twirling the figurine. "It seems I was wrong or maybe she is putting up an act to please you cousin. Since she has been stalking you for years, she must know you like the hardworking type. I wouldn’t be surprised if she walks in with mung bean cakes she conjured from who knows where to gift to you."
Han Xin shot him a warning glance before turning back to Yi Nuo. "Get them clothes from the inventory for new recruits," he said despite having a lot of clothes in his possession that would be more comfortable than the rough fabric that the recruits wore. He wanted to make it so uncomfortable for her that she would ask to be sent to the capital. He would offload her on a few of his men and send her on her merry way. "Where is she now?" he asked curious to know what sort of trouble she was up to. If she was causing trouble, he would bar her from visiting certain places.
"Her Highness is drawing water from the well, sir," she replied, and the expressions in the room changed. It was Han Zhan’s thunderous laughter that broke the silence. He couldn’t believe how far she would go to grab her love interest’s attention. Han Xin’s expression darkened. He regretted asking. Now he won’t hear the end of it. His cousin would tease him to no end.
He dismissed her and Yi Nuo saluted again and left the tent. Han Xin returned his focus to the table, his mind already strategising the next move. Han Zhan leaned back with a mischievous smile. "So, you are going to let your beloved wear rough clothes and sleep in a tiny tent?"
"Shut up, will you? She needs to get it inside her head that I am not interested," he replied the annoyance in his voice apparent.
Han Zhan sighed, his eyes never leaving the figurine. "Don’t be sad when she sets her eyes on someone else. I heard that Jun De whisked her away like a young hero down the mountain. Soon you will get invitations to their wedding."
"That would be even better. At least she will stop harassing me," he replied, his gaze glued to the figurines. He truly seemed unbothered.

After getting the clothes the twins ran back to Xiang Yu, their arms laden with three sets of clothes that smelt like mildew Panting slightly, they handed the garments to him. "Master, we got more clothes." Xiang Yu took the clothes, inspecting them briefly before nodding. He was dissatisfied with them but this was all they had to work with.
"The water in the bucket is hot," he informed them. They picked one of the clothes and rushed towards the makeshift tent. They didn’t want their master to wait for a long time so they squeezed into the makeshift tent together to bathe. From a distance, their muffled voices could be heard, rising and falling in a familiar argument.
Xiang Yu sat further away leaning against a tree but he could still hear them arguing. He glanced around and when the coast was clear he took out the two oranges that were quite uncomfortable. How they stayed put during all that commotion was a mystery to him. He placed them on top of the folded pile of clothes his eyes growing heavy.
He soon began to doze off. In the quiet of his mind, the voice of the Divine Emperor echoed and he almost cursed him and his entire ancestry. "How is Han Xin doing?" the Divine Emperor asked.
Xiang Yu’s lips curled into a faint smirk. "You should be more worried about me. Your dearest disciple is not at all hospitable. He made us sleep in a shabby tent and gave us old cheap clothes to wear. Old man, you need to compensate me for this. This venerable one hasn’t suffered like this in years."
The Divine Emperor didn’t even hear the rest of his complaint. He stopped listening when Xiang Yu said not at all hospitable. He chuckled, a sound that resonated in Xiang Yu’s mind. "That’s good. It means your plan is working."
Xiang Yu, "..."
"I am glad you find our suffering amusing," he replied in a sarcastic tone before he was interrupted by the twins tapping him awake. They had emerged from the makeshift tent their hair damp and their expressions a mix of relief and discomfort. Lian tugged at her sleeve, frowning. "Master this fabric makes me itchy," she complained.
Unlike Lian, Mei twirled in front of Xiang Yu, her eyes wide with anticipation. "Do I look pretty? This colour suits me."
Xiang Yu smiled, his face visibly exhausted. "You both look nice. Bear with it for now. I will buy you proper clothes when we reach the next town. You should wash your dirty clothes in there so they can dry quickly and you can wear them again." The filthy clothes they were wearing before were by far more comfortable than these clothes. If they wash them now, they might be dry by afternoon.
The twins were especially obedient. They beamed at him before pulling a bucket to wash their clothes together. He made his way to the makeshift tent and with a big sigh he peeled off his clothes that were sticking to his skin. He was glad he could still see his male parts when naked otherwise he would go blind. The old man was quite considerate.
