Chapter 273: What happened to Han Xin’s mother
Han Jing woke up, his eyes heavy and uncooperative. When the light penetrated his eyelids, the pain was so excruciating it felt as though his eyes had been set alight.
He shut them tightly, taking a deep breath, only to feel a sharp pang in his chest that made his sore eyes tear up. He tried to get up, but his body refused to obey. His fingers, his legs...nothing responded. Panic began to set in as he struggled to recall how he had ended up here.
Fragments of memory surfaced. He remembered his impulsive yell, confessing to Han Xin that he had killed his mother. That brat Xiang Yu had shot him in the arm and dragged him by his hair, leaving streaks of blood on the floor. The last clear memory was Xiang Yu’s hard punch knocking him out. After that, everything was a blur.
His head throbbed as he tried to piece together the events. He had been partially lucid when they sent him to the trenches, a place where he had condemned countless enemies to rot. Now, he was being sent there by his own illegitimate son. As he was dragged away, he could have sworn he saw the woman who was always beside Han Xin in a cell.
He was pulled into a room and tied to a chair. His consciousness flickered in and out, making it hard to grasp everything that was happening. He remembered his son entering with Xiang Yu and a doctor who seemed eerily familiar.
The doctor injected something into him, and he didn’t even have the strength to resist. His head hung low, feeling strangely relaxed and less guarded. Soon, a wave of drowsiness washed over him, pulling him into a state of semi-consciousness.
The doctor had said it wasn’t the most reliable method, and Han Jing couldn’t help but ask, his speech slow and slurred, "Wha-what method... what are you do-doing to me?" But no one replied to him. He saw Xiang Yu smirk and say, "Then he might need some encouragement."
He saw Han Zhan bring Han Jia into the room and shove him to the ground. Han Xin walked closer, his eyes cold and calculating, and began to ask questions. When Han Jing heard the name Lu Yan, he instinctively pressed his lips together, refusing to talk. But the cries of Han Jia made his chest hurt, and he immediately began to spill everything.
The story of Lu Yan...
Lu Yan was like a stunning flower growing in a swamp. She was a bartender in an underground gambling place. How could such a delicate-looking young woman work in such a place and not be harassed and bullied all the time? That’s what he thought when Han Jing first saw her until the day she smashed a bottle and aimed it at a client’s throat. She wasn’t one to be messed with, nor did she need a knight to rescue her.
He was instantly intrigued, and the fact that she rejected him ignited his desire for conquest. No woman on this earth could ever reject him. After months of trying to win her over, she finally agreed to go on a date with him. It was the most exciting time in his life and the sex was phenomenal. Han Jing thought he would fool around with her for a bit then dump her like his other mistresses but Lu Yan was like an addictive poison he couldnt bring himself to let go.
The relationship didn’t last long though and it wasn’t him him who ended it. The day she found out he was married and who he really was, she stabbed him with her hairpin right into his shoulder. Just like that, she disappeared, and he never saw her for many years. He tried to look for her, but he couldn’t find her again
His pride and ego were trampled by that woman, and for years he was resentful. He was the one who always broke things up, not the other way around. Years later when he found out that his son Han Jia was useless, he knew he had to cultivate another heir. He didn’t have more kids with his wife because she couldn’t have more kids and he also didn’t want Han Jia to be threatened by his siblings like he had been challenged by his brother for the position of the family head. He didn’t want Han Jia to face the same decision that he was faced with. To this day, his brother haunted him in his sleep. But without competition, Han Jia became lazy and spoiled, which wasn’t good.
Han Jing had always been meticulous in his plans, and bringing his illegitimate son into the family was no different. He had two sons and a daughter living outside his household, but none were suitable for the position he envisioned. One was a bookworm with a timid nature, another was as foolish as they come, and the girl was just like her mother—too ambitious for her own good.
Just when he was considering adopting a son to cultivate, he discovered that Lu Yan had a son she had never told him about. That stubborn woman had raised the boy with the help of her mother, doing an excellent job of hiding him from Han Jing. Determined, he paid her a visit, demanding she give up the boy. But Lu Yan was as stubborn as ever. She told him to get lost and threatened to end him if he even thought about her son.
Han Jing knew he couldn’t use force to take his son; otherwise, the boy would hate him. He had to make his son feel grateful torwards him. Dealing with Lu Yan was easy. He paid a few people to poison her slowly over six months, a condition misdiagnosed as cancer. He thought she would come begging for money, but she remained stubborn. She neither sought him out nor did her son.
When she died, Han Jing sent his butler to arrange the funeral and bring his son home. But Lu Yan’s stubbornness was inherited from her mother. The old woman refused to give up her grandson and planned to leave the country with him. Running out of patience, Han Jing found someone to end the old woman and made it look natural. With no one left to stop him, he took his son home and changed his name to Han Xin.
Han Xin was brought into the family with all the privileges and responsibilities of an heir. Han Jing watched him closely, moulding him into the successor he needed. The boy was sharp, resilient, and had a fire in his eyes that reminded Han Jing of Lu Yan. He knew he had made the right choice. Han Xin would be the one to carry on his legacy, to lead the family with strength and cunning while Han Jia reaped the benefits without lifting a finger as the head of the family.
