Chapter 111: A husband spoiling his wife hehe
Mei and Lian exchanged excited glances, their faces lighting up with joy. They always wanted an older brother and Baihe was perfect. "We promise, master!" Mei exclaimed, her eyes sparkling. Lian nodded enthusiastically, her smile wide and genuine.
Yi Nuo, who had been quietly observing them, couldn’t hide her surprise. She didn’t actually think that Princess Xiu would care enough to get this poor young man his freedom. Her admiration for the princess grew even more. She was like a bodhisattva this world didn’t deserve.
Xiang Yu turned back to Baihe, his expression softening. "You should stop kowtowing," he said gently. "If you have anything you want to pack, go ahead."
Baihe shook his head, his eyes still glistening with tears. "I have nothing to my name," he admitted quietly.
Xiang Yu’s brow furrowed slightly in concern. "Do you want to go back to your home?" he asked. He knew the answer to this question but he still had to ask.
Baihe’s gaze dropped to the floor. "I have no home," he replied, his voice barely above a whisper. When his parents passed his aunt had sold him here after saying he would be too expensive to raise. He thought he would be running errands and cleaning the brothel but when the madam saw his face she changed her mind and thus his suffering began.
Lian stepped forward, her hand reaching out to clasp Baihe’s. "Then you will come with us, brother," she said firmly, her eyes filled with determination. Mei nodded her head happily, her smile warm and welcoming. "Yes, you are one of us now," she added, her voice filled with sincerity. Xiang Yu was glad to see them getting along. Sure, they were now three mouths to feed but they would make it work.
As they descended the grand staircase of the establishment, the air was thick with whispers and glances. The courtesans lined the walls, their eyes following Baihe with a mix of envy and jealousy. Some hoped he would find misfortune where he was going, their expressions betraying their spiteful thoughts.
Baihe’s steps faltered, his gaze fixed firmly on the floor. His heart pounded in his chest, each step feeling heavier than the last. He could feel the weight of their stares, the judgment in their eyes.
Sensing his unease, Lian and Mei each took one of his arms, their grips reassuring and protective. Mei’s eyes flashed with anger as she glared at them. "What are you looking at?" she snapped, her voice cutting through the murmurs.
Lian chimed in, her tone equally fierce. "Yeah, what are you looking at? Come on, brother," she urged, giving Baihe’s arm a gentle squeeze.
Baihe glanced up at them, his eyes wide with gratitude. Their support gave him the strength to lift his head, to face the courtesans with a newfound sense of dignity. He walked with his new family, feeling a glimmer of hope for the future that lay ahead.
Meanwhile, Han Xin was standing outside the brothel, the dim light casting long shadows on the cobblestone street. Han Zhan stood beside him wondering why they were waiting here. Peng Xiu was staying at the inn and they were stayed with his cousin’s uncle.
They were going opposite ways and Peng Xiu had Yi Nuo to protect her so there was no need for them to wait for her. He might have thought so but he didn’t voice his concern. Instead, he was more interested in what happened when his cousin left the private room. "What happened with Peng Xiu earlier?" he asked, his voice low but insistent.
Han Xin shrugged, trying to appear nonchalant. "It was nothing. She just wanted to take Baihe away, so she was negotiating with the madam."
Han Zhan’s eyes widened in realisation. "But she doesn’t have enough money to redeem someone from this place. You must have paid for it." His cousin’s expression remained unreadable, but he could see the truth in his eyes. He choked on his next words. "You paid for Peng Xiu to get a—"
Before he could finish, Han Xin grabbed his arm and pulled him close, hushing him urgently. "Keep your voice down," he whispered fiercely. At this rate, the entire street will know his business.
Han Zhan swallowed hard and lowered his voice to a whisper. "You paid for her to get a male concubine?"
Han Xin was about to tell him to keep his mouth shut when a familiar voice came from behind them. "What are you guys talking about?"
Both men turned to see Peng Xiu standing there, her presence as sudden and unsettling as a ghost. Han Zhan’s heart skipped a beat, and he laughed nervously. "Nothing, we were just... talking."
Xiang Yu’s eyes narrowed, and Han Zhan couldn’t shake the feeling that his cousin was in deep trouble. If she was going to be his sister-in-law, he might have to fear for his life. She was too terrifying.
Han Xin glanced at Baihe, who was now following them and turned to leave without a word. Han Zhan, ever the welcoming one, called out, "Welcome to the squad!" before running after his cousin. He had no idea what his cousin was thinking. This was a strange way to pursue someone.
Xiang Yu smiled slightly; his eyes glued to Han Xin’s back. He knew from this point onwards life would be more interesting. As they walked back, Lian piped up, "Master, let’s get hawthorns to celebrate and welcome Brother Baihe."
Even Mei, though a miser, thought it was a great idea. Xiang Yu had more than enough money for hawthorns but he didn’t want to pay for it. He saw an opportunity to annoy Han Xin again. Turning to the twins, he said, "Watch this," and caught up with Han Xin.
Adjusting her voice to mimic the courtesans at the brothel, he called out, "General," his voice dripping with honey as he tugged at his sleeve. Han Xin would have found her actions irritating if it was anyone else. He still felt uncomfortable but it was tolerable.
Han Zhan watched them like he was seeing a movie unfold. He couldn’t help but admire Peng Xiu. Most people would back down when faced with Han Xin’s cold, icy gaze, but she wasn’t fazed at all by his indifference.
"Let go of my sleeve," Han Xin said, his voice firm.
"Only if you buy us hawthorns," Xiang Yu replied, his grip tightening.
Han Zhan almost had a heart attack. He couldn’t fathom what was happening here. Was Peng Xiu a witch? She must be otherwise how could she have bewitched his stingy cousin? Han Xin glanced at the fingers pinching his sleeve and felt exasperated. "What happened to all the money earlier?" he asked.
Xiang Yu shamelessly listed all the things he had bought. Dresses, shoes, rogue, food, you name it. Han Xin couldn’t listen anymore. Like a husband spoiling his wife, he handed her the money bag and told her not to spend it all in one place.
Having got what he wanted Xiang Yu smiled triumphantly. "The General is so so generous," he said, his voice sweet and mocking.
After he walked away Han Zhan licked his dry lips and whispered, "Cousin, how about me? Lend me some money too." Han Xin glared at him and said, "Do I look like a loan shark to you?"
Han Zhan, "???"
