Chapter 47: Chapter 46: Shattered Illusions
"That one. Open it." Adrian’s voice was tense as he pointed to a folder bearing Blair’s name.
Rex hesitated, his fingers hovering over the mouse. "You sure you want to see that?"
Adrian’s voice, hollow and raw, barely registered. "I need to know how bad it is."
Rex reluctantly clicked on the folder.
As expected, inside were dozens of files, each named with a date and Blair’s initials.
The thumbnails alone revealed enough to make Adrian’s face contorted with rage.
"That manipulative piece of shit," Adrian growled, "Look at the timestamps. This started last month when her grades fell."
Rex nodded grimly. "Classic pattern. Pressure, then offer a ’special arrangement’ to fix their grade."
"Are you sure you want to see the video?" Rex confirmed again.
Adrian didn’t respond immediately, "Hmmm," Adrian nodded with a grim face, his jaw clenched tightly. "I need to see it."
Rex clicked on a video. The screen flickered for a moment before loading, showing Blair in the professor’s office, laughing softly as she leaned in for a kiss. Adrian’s breath caught in his throat, his body tense as his eyes narrowed.
He didn’t want to see this. He couldn’t.
He turned away, the anger coursing through his veins was overwhelming, his hands clenched into fists at his sides.
His whole body was shaking with anger, but the knot in his chest was the worst part. He’d never imagined he’d see something like this.
He had always trusted her. How could she do this to him?
Rex turned to the side, not looking at the video.
The video continued, just when they were about to remove clothes.
"Stop," Adrian snapped, his voice hoarse. "I can’t... just stop."
Rex immediately turned off the video. He hadn’t planned to force Adrian to relive any of this. He understood how raw it must be.
"Sorry, man," Rex muttered.
Exiting the video folder, he clicked on another file, hoping to find something less personal. But Adrian’s eyes were still locked on the screen, his mind racing.
For a moment, the two of them stood in silence, the tension thick between them. Finally Adrian’s voice broke the stillness, his tone unsteady.
"Can you...?"He hesitated before continuing. "C-can you please blur her face when revealing it?" He said, his tone low but fierce. "No matter what. She was my girlfriend, and even though I... I can’t—I don’t want anyone to see her like this."
Rex met Adrian’s eyes, a silent understanding passing between them. He nodded, his expression serious.
In fact, he hadn’t really planned on exposing Blair’s or any other girl’s face. He didn’t need to, as there was already enough evidence to destroy Clement. So, there was no real need to expose the girl’s face. Anyway, he didn’t have any malice toward these girls.
Yeah, they were wrong too, but what did that have to do with him? As for ethics and morals about exposing the wrong, he didn’t care. He had no interest in upholding some abstract sense of justice.
He wasn’t some knight in shining armor. It wasn’t his duty, nor would he gain anything from it. It was their life—they could do whatever they wanted with it. If he really went on being some apostle of justice, he’d have to say goodbye to his dream of a normal, fun, and leisurely life.
Anyway, there was already so much filth in the world that one couldn’t even comprehend its scale. And it’s not like it would ever be gone. As long as there were humans with emotions, desires, and free will, things like these could never be eliminated.
He just wanted to live a simple, normal life. But if the situation permitted, he could be generous. Anyway, he had enough money, it wouldn’t hurt to help others a bit. But if someone really tested his limits, he wouldn’t mind becoming the worst they could ever imagine.
So, instead of focusing on others, he focused on what really concerned him. What mattered now was Clement. He had to be dealt with.
"So, what’s the plan?" Adrian’s voice brought him back to reality.
Rex thought for a moment. "Well, it’s not something complicated. Tomorrow is Sunday, so obviously, we can’t do anything."
"So, on Monday, I’ll hack into the school netw—"
"W-Wait... wait... Did I hear that correctly? What do you mean by hacking?" Adrian asked, bewildered. His voice was thick with disbelief.
"Literally, just what it means," Rex replied nonchalantly.
Seeing him like this, Adrian felt even more confused, his mind raced as he tried to process what Rex was saying. "H-how? I mean, how and when did you start learning hacking?"
"It’s nothing much. It looked fun and interesting, so I just spent the past couple of months learning it."
Hearing this, Adrian opened his mouth to say something but no words came out. He didn’t know what to say. Hacking wasn’t kid’s play; you couldn’t just learn it because you found it interesting. It took years to even learn the basics.
He had also had a childhood dream of learning hacking, but after trying for a while and realizing how much there was to learn, he simply gave up. And now, Rex was saying that he had already learned it in just a couple of months... He stood there, stupefied.
Seeing him like this, Rex could already guess what he was thinking.
He chuckled "Hey man, chill. I did learn hacking, but it’s just the basics for now. To really master hacking, I have a long way to go."
"Otherwise, how did you think I broke into Clement’s computer?"
Hearing this, Adrian felt a bit better, but to think that Rex had already mastered enough to bypass locks and hack into a network was amazing enough.
And he was so swept up in Rex’s confidence that he hadn’t thought about this issue.
After finally digesting this information, he looked at Rex with envy and spoke sourly, "Man, how did you do it? Can you teach me too?"
"I just holed up inside my room and studied without eating or drinking," Rex said (though he was forced by the system). "As for teaching you, just forget about that. With your attention span of a fish, it’s already a miracle you reached university." He joked.
Seeing his puppy eyes, he added, "But if you really want to learn, it’s not impossible. I’ll share my personal hundreds of gigabytes of videos, learn them first, then we can start."
Adrian’s eyes widened, "H-hundreds of thousands..." Adrian gulped. "Oh! I suddenly remembered that I have an important project to finish, we’ll talk about it later." He said, his eyes widening as if he had just remembered it.
"Hahaha, Sure you do, man."" Rex just laughed and didn’t call him out on his excuse.
After laughing, he turned his attention back to the laptop, and his expression became serious again.
Adrian also stopped and glanced at the laptop screen.
"So, what’s the plan?"
As if nothing had changed, Rex picked up where he left off. "Like I said, I’ll hack into the school network and—"
