He had his men search the entire city for ten full days, but they found no trace of him.

"Feifan, I was wrong, truly wrong. I don’t expect your forgiveness, I just want to speak a few words to you."

"Speak," Ren Feifan answered indifferently, his face emotionless.

The man sat up, his eyes moist and teary.

"You are the only one to carry the Ren family’s bloodline, not your elder brother, Ren Feicheng. Your mother and I made a misstep due to certain circumstances. You probably felt I favoured your brother since childhood, but let me tell you, the one I truly favoured was you."

Ren Feifan scoffed, "Does banishing me from the Ren family, publicly, count as favoritism? Huh."

His voice was cold; the man’s emotional appeals had no effect on him.

The man could only shake his head helplessly, gazing out the window lost in deep thought. After a while, he made a shocking statement, "If I hadn’t done this, you might not have lived till now."

Ren Feifan was stunned. Based on the fluctuation in the man’s voice, it didn’t seem like he was lying.

If what he did hadn’t happened, would he have died?

Could there be some unknown reason behind this man’s casting him away from the Ren family?

The man nodded, "Your mother disappeared because she was taken away by the people from the Hidden Gate’s Wang family. I tried to stop it but was severely injured. I watched helplessly as she was taken away. It’s why I have been irascible these past years."

"I thought I was never going to see your mother again, until one day three years ago, a mysterious man found me. He knew your mother and mentioned quite a few things about her—everything matched exactly."

"More importantly, he brought a letter. Your mother wrote that letter. The letter essentially instructed me to immediately find a way to banish you from our family, and that I could not show any emotion while doing so."

The man’s gaze fell on Ren Feifan’s neck where the jade pendant used to be. He immediately asked anxiously, "Feifan, where’s the jade pendant from your neck?"

Ren Feifan reassured him, "Dad, don’t worry, the jade pendant is still with me."

That single utterance of ’Dad’ left the man stunned, choking him up instantly.
