Chapter 156: Chapter 155: In my dictionary, there is no disappointment (Three updates!)_1
All the police officers stared in disbelief, was the captain really asking them to leave?
Did the captain really believe that this man could hunt down the murderer all by himself?
If anyone was that good, then what was the point of having the police?
The key issue here was somewhat baffling, and the captain seemed to have a bit of unquestioned faith.
Though everyone wanted to stay, the captain’s eyes held a hint of authority. Everyone subconsciously shifted their gaze and eventually, the other officers had no choice but to leave in their squad cars.
Only three people were left at the scene: Ren Feifan, Zhu Xiaolin, and an old officer, Uncle Qin.
Ren Feifan needed help, and these three were just about right for the job.
Zhu Xiaolin pursed her lips, stepped forward, and asked: "I’ve sent everyone away as you requested. Now it’s your turn. Honestly, I’m not sure why I even agreed to do as you said. I just hope you won’t let me down."
"Disappointment is not in my vocabulary," replied Ren Feifan calmly.
Upon hearing Ren Feifan’s arrogant claim, Uncle Qin shook his helpless head, thinking this young man was too flamboyant. How was he going to find anything relying solely on himself?
There was absolutely no lead here whatsoever!
The young people these days are becoming less and less reliable.
While Uncle Qin didn’t hold out much hope for Ren Feifan, he didn’t voice his doubts either. As a police officer for several decades, his sole ambition was to remain blameless. As for other matters, he had seen enough and was indifferent. If these people wanted to play, let them play.
Looking at the few corpses in front of him, Ren Feifan sighed deeply. If he wanted to uncover the truth for the deceased, he had to resort to that method!
He turned to Zhu Xiaolin and Uncle Qin, saying: "Help me find nine mirrors, remember, they must be round, and one of them must be a bronze mirror. The village should have them, once you find them, bring them here."
Upon hearing Ren Feifan’s request for mirrors, Zhu Xiaolin became quite displeased. She snapped: "Ren Feifan, aren’t you supposed to be looking for the killer? Now isn’t the time for vanity, don’t you know the longer we wait, the harder it is to find?"
Ren Feifan was not in the mood to explain, he simply stated: "Nine mirrors, none less. The truth will come to light when the time comes!"
Uncle Qin shook his head, his opinion of Ren Feifan was worsening. The young man was not just flashy but also childish. Did he think a mirror could reflect what had happened in the past?
Go to hell!
Zhu Xiaolin fought back her anger. She took a deep breath, pretended to be calm, and said: "Fine! You want mirrors, I’ll find them. Anything else you need, tell me now. Even if you wanted the moon in the sky, I’d pluck it down for you!"
Ren Feifan paused, looking surprised. He turned around and sheepishly said: "I didn’t expect you to guess right. I do need the moon. But you two just need to find the mirrors, I’ll handle the moon!"
Zhu Xiaolin almost fainted. Ren Feifan seemed to grow more and more unreliable by the minute. She was starting to regret ever agreeing with him in the first place. This was utter madness!
She huffed coldly, gesturing emphatically before disappearing from the crime scene with Uncle Qin by her side.
Since Zhu Xiaolin and Uncle Qin were wearing police uniforms, finding mirrors was much easier than expected. They even managed to get a bronze mirror from an old lady in the village.
Ren Feifan was very pleased with the nine mirrors in front of him.
Zhu Xiaolin pointed at the mirrors and asked: "I have brought what you asked for, what’s next? We can’t leave the bodies exposed for too long. I’ll have to move them to a designated vehicle soon."
Ren Feifan found a spot to sit and said leisurely: "Just wait for the moon to rise."
Usually reserved, Uncle Qin could no longer hold his tongue. Four girls had been left dead in the wilderness for quite a while, and this young man was still waiting?
Fetching mirrors was a small matter; the burial of the deceased was the real issue!
Uncle Qin walked up to Ren Feifan and demanded: "Young man, I don’t care what your beliefs are, and I don’t care why you’ve been mumbling about mirrors. I don’t even care if you can uncover the truth or not! After so many years of service, it just doesn’t sit right with me anymore. Doesn’t this disturb your conscience?"
Ren Feifan opened his eyes, not wanting to explain. He looked up at the sky; it had grown dark but the moon was yet to rise.
The time was not yet right.
"Let’s wait a little longer," he said.
"Wait, wait, wait! Wait for what? These victims have already suffered enough, having their eyes gouged out. You won’t even give them a proper rest! Captain, don’t listen to him. Let’s get the bodies loaded into the van!"
It was clear that Uncle Qin had lost his temper. He was usually quiet but now he wouldn’t stop talking.
However, Zhu Xiaolin didn’t move. She looked at the sky, feeling as if something was about to happen. It was like a woman’s sixth sense, very accurate. Immediately, she asked Ren Feifan: "Just tell me, how long do you need?"
"Ten minutes," he replied.
"Uncle Qin, we’ve waited this long already. An extra ten minutes won’t hurt. Let’s wait a little longer for my sake," Zhu Xiaolin persuaded him.
She respected this older colleague. Uncle Qin had been a police officer for many years, always honest and upright. If he saw something unjust, even if the culprit was the chief, he wouldn’t back down.
That was one of the reasons why she kept him around.
Uncle Qin glanced at Ren Feifan, snorted, turned around and said, "Fine! I’ll give you ten more minutes! I’m curious to see what tricks you can pull."
With no more arguments, Qingshui Village fell completely silent.
Aside from the occasional barks of a dog, the desolate Qingshui Village was eerily quiet. The dark and cloudy sky gave the illusion of a thick barrier that separated the village and the rest of the world, creating a chilling atmosphere. It felt like the perfect night for a killing, with the sky being lit and the ground dark.
In the heavy darkness of the night, where no stars were visible, the sky seemed like it was smothered by an infinite amount of ink.
After what seemed like forever, the foggy night was finally invaded by the moonlight....
The beams of moonlight scattered onto the bodies of the four deceased girls....
"Ten minutes are up!" Qin Shu shuddered, tightened his clothes, and came straight to Ren Feifan.
Zhu Xiaolin also rose to her feet, waiting for the so-called truth from Ren Feifan.
Suddenly, Ren Feifan opened his eyes, casting a mysterious light. A relaxed voice came: "No matter what happens next, I hope you won’t make a sound! And keep today’s events to yourselves when you leave here!"
The two were startled, feeling a chill creeping up their spines. Could it be that Ren Feifan was going to summon spirits?
Ren Feifan stood in front of the four corpses, took a tree branch, and drew a simple formation. Whispering words under his breath, he really seemed like a Taoist.
"Place a mirror on each of the five points that I’ve drawn!" he ordered.
Zhu Xiaolin did as instructed, despite her doubt.
"Place a mirror on this spot," he said.
Uncle Qin also did as asked.
"We need another mirror here."
"Captain, what is he trying to do?" Uncle Qin suddenly asked, curiosity getting the better of him.
Zhu Xiaolin shook her head. If only she knew.
The eight mirrors were placed in eight different directions, all facing the four bodies in the center. The distorted faces of the deceased reflected in the mirrors, creating a creepy atmosphere.
