Chapter 152: Chapter 151: Getting hit as soon as the door opens! _1
Ren Feifan, oblivious to the events unfolding at the hospital, is now strolling along the schoolyard with Lin Xiaoxi.
Setting foot in this school once again stirred up some nostalgia in Ren Feifan.
Three years ago, he was in his second year of high school. If not for an unexpected turn of events, he should now be in college.
However, the incident three years ago had caused him to bypass that phase altogether.
At the same age, others were in school, while he, Ren Feifan, had learned the art of killing.
At the same age, others were in love, but he was struggling to survive in the Forest of Death.
At the same age, others were full of joy and laughter, while he was sneaking into wolf packs and decapitating the pack leader.
He, Ren Feifan, was destined to be different from the others and to tread a different path in life.
"Brother Feifan, thank you for everything today," Lin Xiaoxi, tugging nervously at the hem of her clothing, could feel her heart pounding in her chest as she walked beside Ren Feifan.
Does Brother Feifan still remember the day she kissed him?
If he does, would he consider her as someone unworthy?
Pulled back from his thoughts, Ren Feifan smiled faintly, patting Lin Xiaoxi gently on her head and joking, "Why thank me? Didn’t you find it strange to see me show up out of nowhere?"
Laughing, Lin Xiaoxi looked up at Ren Feifan with her bright and earnest eyes, "It doesn’t matter to me why you were there. I just have faith that you’re sent by Heaven to help me."
Ren Feifan was speechless. This girl is surely naïve. But for his good fortune in overhearing her classmates’ conversation, who knows what might have happened?
Destiny indeed works in mysterious ways.
"Brother Feifan, would you like to have dinner at my home tonight?" Lin Xiaoxi suggested sincerely, an innocent sparkle in her eyes.
This request, however, took Ren Feifan by surprise and made him uncomfortable. Straightforward as Lin Xiaoxi is, could she be possibly trying to...?
Well, she couldn’t be...
"Um, that might not be... Xiaoxi... We have not..." He stammered.
Before he could finish, Lin Xiaoxi interjected, "My dad’s braised lion’s head meatballs are simply delicious! I’m sure you’ll love it!"
Ren Feifan breathed a sigh of relief, "Oh, so you just wanted to invite me over for dinner. Here I was, letting my mind wander somewhere else, sheesh."
"Brother Feifan," she asked with a touch of concern, "why the sigh? Is it because you think my family’s food isn’t good?"
Hastily gesturing with his hands, Ren Feifan laughed sheepishly, "N-no, not at all... I was just lost in thought."
"Let’s just head home now," Lin Xiaoxi suggested with an eager look in her eyes.
"Don’t you have school? It’s not yet dismissal time, is it? And don’t you live in the dormitory?" Ren Feifan inquired.
"Given what has happened, you think I could still live there? This morning, my roommates threw all my belongings outside," Lin Xiaoxi said helplessly.
This triggered Ren Feifan’s anger. "Take me to your dormitory. I want to see who dared to throw your stuff out," he demanded.
"Brother Feifan, it’s not necessary. I’ll just ride my bike to and from school starting tomorrow. I don’t need to live in the dormitory," Lin Xiaoxi insisted.
Her stubborn stand reflected clearly how much this incident had affected her.
Realizing this, Ren Feifan recalled the instructions he had given the dean. He was sure that the dean would handle things well, and Lin Xiaoxi would be able to return to her normal life the next day.
...
Qingshui Village, located on the outskirts of Lin City, was surrounded by mountains, and hardly any signals could get through.
This was the village where Lin Xiaoxi lived.
The two took a taxi from the school to the village, which was about an hour and a half away, prompting Ren Feifan to wonder just how much time Lin Xiaoxi would have to spend each day if she rode her bicycle to school.
Further exacerbating his concern was the fact that a large portion of the route leading to the village was remote and desolate, completely devoid of illumination or signs of human habitation. The thought of a sweet, innocent girl like Lin Xiaoxi having to tread this path on her bike every day to attend school, left him deeply worried.
If the issues at school were not resolved by tomorrow, then the dean, Li Kaifu, would be in for a real treat.
If worst came to worst, he’d just have Lin Xiaoxi move into the villa - there was more than enough space anyway. The villa was located near No. 2 Middle School of Lin City, just a fifteen-minute walk away, which was definitely the best solution.
Eventually, they stopped in front of an old mud-brick house. The windows were pasted with newspapers, the door was riddled with holes, and the roof was full of cracks. Ren Feifan could only imagine how uncomfortable it would be for Lin Xiaoxi in there whenever it rained.
Turning somewhat red in the face, Lin Xiaoxi muttered softly, "Brother Feifan, our family isn’t rich, and our house is also shabby. I hope you aren’t bothered by it."
Raising a smile, Ren Feifan stepped in without hesitation, saying in all seriousness, "Xiaoxi, I believe a person’s dignity is not determined by his wealth, the type of house he lives in, or his social status, but by his ability to exploit his talents and lead a meaningful life. Some live in luxurious villas, yet their consciences are worse than those of dogs. Others are homeless, yet their hearts are with their nations and loved ones. Besides, a house is home, and as long as the family is happy, it doesn’t matter what kind of a house it is."
At this, Lin Xiaoxi’s eyes lit up, leaving her with a profound sense of comprehension. She took a deep look at Ren Feifan and nodded vigorously, "Brother Feifan, I’ve taken your words to heart. I’ll try my best."
Saying that, Lin Xiaoxi bounded into the house, calling out for her father, "Dad, I’ve brought a friend over! Remember to make those lion’s head meatballs for Brother Feifan!"
As he stepped over the threshold, Ren Feifan was greeted by a delicious aroma, stirring his appetite.
Looking around, he noticed an entire wall filled with certificates - all of them in Lin Xiaoxi’s name.
It seemed like Xiaoxi was quite a scholar.
"Eh, Xiaoxi, how come you’re home? Shouldn’t you be at school?" a man with a suntanned complexion, clothed in a robe and a coarse apron, emerged from the kitchen, expressing surprise at seeing Lin Xiaoxi.
Not wanting to worry her father, Lin Xiaoxi had to lie, "There was a power outage at school today, so they gave us the day off. I decided to come home early."
Lin Tiezhu, Lin Xiaoxi’s father, acknowledged her explanation. Then he noticed the figure of a man. His eyebrows furrowed; he had always been against high school students dating, and he was shocked that his daughter had actually brought a boyfriend home.
Finding himself bewildered, he picked up a bamboo cane and sternly demanded, "Who is this man? Haven’t I reminded you time and again against dating at this age? I’m not making any lion’s head meatballs today or any other dish for that matter!"
Lin Tiezhu was a farmer through and through, with a traditional mindset that caused him to be irked easily.
This put Lin Xiaoxi into a predicament. She had never dreamt that her father would be so fiery about this issue. Fearing that her father would blow a gasket, she hurriedly whispered in explanation, "No, he... he’s not my boyfriend. He’s a really, really good man!"
Lin Xiaoxi was concerned about having Ren Feifan overhear the "boyfriend" issue; her cheeks turned crimson. Seeing his daughter blushing made Lin Tiezhu even more furious.
If she’s blushing, it must be a relationship, right?
