Chapter 112: This Place, With You

Chapter 112: This Place, With You

Billy walked the slow path home, his shoes brushing over the dirt road, the breeze shifting through the trees like a whisper.

The village air was cooler now, touched by the coming night. The golden light of the setting sun curled around the rooftops and cast long shadows ahead of him.

He didn’t rush. He couldn’t.

Each step felt like a thread pulling from two different worlds. The one he’d known—this quiet, grounded place of routine and warmth—and the one now tugging at his mind, distant but real:

A mother’s tearful voice, a sister’s laugh from the past, the weight of a name he didn’t remember choosing.

When he reached the house, the door was already open.

Artur stood in the entry, his back straight but his eyes gentle, waiting—not asking.

Billy looked up at him, then down again, his shoulders dropping slightly. Artur didn’t say a word.

He just reached forward, took Billy’s hand with quiet certainty, and led him inside.

They walked through the dim hallway, the creak of the floorboards grounding them.

In their shared room, Artur sat down first on the edge of the bed and tugged Billy down beside him.

"You okay?" he asked softly.

Billy nodded. "Yeah."

Artur studied him for a second longer, then let the quiet settle.

Billy looked down at their hands, still loosely held, then exhaled. "I have a sister."

Artur blinked. "Really?"

Yeah. Her name’s Camila. She’s younger... Mr. Frank showed me a photo. She looks just like me.

He paused, a small, crooked smile appearing. Only prettier. She had this wild curly hair and a mischievous grin like she knew something I didn’t.

Artur watched the way Billy’s expression shifted—still unsure, but softer now. You sounded surprised.

I was. I didn’t expect to feel anything. But when I saw that picture... it wasn’t a memory, it was just a feeling.

Like something unlocked a little." He glanced up. "And my mom. We spoke."

Artur’s eyes widened slightly. "You did?"

Billy nodded slowly. "It was a video call. I could see her face... she cried a lot. I didn’t know what to say. I couldn’t even call her Mom. It felt wrong—but also... right."

He scratched his head, trying to find words that didn’t exist. "She told me she never gave up. That every day she thought I’d walk through the door."

Artur didn’t speak. He just listened.

"I wanted to tell her something meaningful. But all I could say was... ’I’m sorry.’"

Billy let out a quiet laugh, almost breathless. "I’m not sure what I’m sorry for. Maybe for forgetting. Maybe for being here instead of there."

"You don’t need to be sorry," Artur said, firm but quiet. "You’ve been through enough."

Billy looked at him, really looked. "That’s what Mr. Frank said too."

Another beat passed between them. Billy leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. I still don’t remember. But seeing them reminded me—there’s a life out there, even if I’m not sure I want to return to it. Maybe I owe it to myself to know who I used to be.

Artur’s voice was steady. "Whatever you choose, just know you don’t owe anyone your happiness."

Billy turned slightly, meeting his eyes. "I know. But I owe them a part of me, even if I don’t remember why."

Artur nodded slowly. "You looked different when you walked in. Like something shifted."

Billy smiled faintly. "It did."

They sat like that a while longer, two silhouettes in a room painted with the last light of dusk.

There were no easy answers—but at least now, there was the beginning of a bridge between two worlds.

And Billy, for the first time, was ready to cross it—one step at a time.

The room grew darker, save for the dim glow of the moon spilling through the window.

The silence wasn’t uncomfortable. It was soft. Knowing. It carried the weight of words they didn’t need to say.

Billy’s heart still felt heavy, but it was a different kind of heaviness now—more like something that had been unpacked, even if it hadn’t all been processed.

Artur didn’t rush to fill the silence. He simply let Billy sit there, the steady rhythm of his breath the only sound between them.

Billy turned slightly to face him, watching the soft lines of Artur’s face.

The way his eyes didn’t seem to need to say anything for him to understand. There was a reassurance in that.

"I don’t know what’s next," Billy said, his voice quiet, but steady. "But... I feel like I should figure it out.

Whether it’s here, or back with my family, or somewhere in between. I just don’t want to lose myself in the process."

Artur’s fingers twitched on the bedspread, but he didn’t reach out. He knew the unspoken boundaries.

"You won’t lose yourself," he said simply. "You’re here now, and you’re figuring it out. That’s enough."

Billy gave him a small, grateful smile, leaning back into the bed, staring up at the ceiling.

His thoughts were a jumble—memories still locked away, family who wanted him, a life he didn’t fully remember, and a part of him that wanted to hold onto what he had here. What he had with Artur.

"Thanks for being here," Billy said softly after a long beat, his voice nearly drowned by the quiet. "For not rushing me. For not making me feel like I had to pick a side."

Artur’s gaze softened as he turned toward Billy, the weight of his words settling between them like a promise. "You don’t have to pick. Not with me. I’m not going anywhere."

Billy looked at him, a little surprised at how easily those words slid off Artur’s tongue.

The vulnerability in his voice was clear, but not in a way that made Billy uncomfortable.

Instead, it made him feel safer. Like Artur understood that this wasn’t just about the past—it was about the present. About what they had now. Whatever the future held.

"I don’t know what I want to do yet," Billy continued, his voice growing quieter. "But when I think about the future, I picture it with you here. In this place."

Artur didn’t say anything for a long moment. Instead, he moved a little closer, the warmth of his body a subtle comfort next to Billy’s. "Whatever happens, I’ll be here. You don’t have to face any of it alone."

Billy turned his head to look at him, his eyes catching the faint light from the moon. "I don’t think I could. Not with how things are right now."

There was a long silence between them. Artur reached out slowly, gently taking Billy’s hand again, but this time it wasn’t just a comfort.

It felt like an anchor. Something that would keep Billy grounded, no matter what choices lay ahead.

Billy squeezed his hand softly, the simple touch enough to settle the storm in his chest.

Billy stared at their joined hands for a long while. So many things felt uncertain—yesterday, today, tomorrow.

But this—this wasn’t.

"I don’t know how things will change," he whispered, "but... I know I’m not ready to let go of this. Of you."

Artur’s eyes softened, a small, quiet smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "You won’t have to."

They sat in that silence for a long while, the weight of the day behind them and the uncertainty of tomorrow ahead.

But for now, they didn’t need to talk any more. They just needed to be. Together.

And when sleep finally came, it carried them both—quiet, steady, still holding hands.

Morning come too soon.

A soft breeze slipped in through the open window, carrying the scent of damp earth and early blossoms.

Light filtered gently across the wooden floor, warm and pale like a quiet whisper.

In the stillness, the only sound was the distant rustle of trees and the low murmur of birds waking the world.

Billy stirred, his eyelashes fluttering against the faint glow. He didn’t open his eyes just yet.

There was something sacred about this moment—something he didn’t want to disturb.

The silence was comfortable, a kind of peace that had settled inside him overnight, fragile but real.

Beside him, Artur shifted slightly, and Billy could feel the soft press of his presence—close, solid, familiar.

He finally blinked his eyes open.

Artur was already awake, sitting up against the headboard with one knee drawn up, absently rubbing his arm as he stared toward the window.

His hair was slightly tousled from sleep, and there was a quiet focus in his gaze, like he was already halfway into the day ahead.

Billy didn’t move right away. He watched him in silence, letting the warmth in his chest bloom again—subtle, slow.

"You’re awake," Artur said softly, glancing down at him.

Billy nodded, voice still husky from sleep. "Didn’t want to get up yet."

Artur smiled faintly, the kind that didn’t quite reach his eyes but was still real. "Yeah... I get that."

They sat in silence for a moment, the weight of yesterday lingering between them—not heavy, just present.

Billy stretched slightly, letting out a quiet yawn before shifting up to sit beside him. "Thanks for last night," he said, voice low. "You didn’t say much... but it helped."

"You didn’t need words," Artur replied. "You just needed space. I wanted to give you that."

Billy glanced at him, a small smile curling at the edge of his lips. "You always know what I need before I do."

"Only because I’m watching," Artur said, teasing gently. "I’m very observant."

Billy bumped his shoulder into him, then let his head rest lightly against Artur’s. "Guess I should be grateful for that."

"You should," Artur said, half a laugh under his breath.

They stayed like that for a few moments longer, letting the morning ease in around them.

Outside, someone was already moving down the road—perhaps Tomas, or one of the neighbors tending to early chores.

Billy sat up fully. "Should we head out?"

Artur nodded, but his eyes lingered on Billy a moment longer. "Only if you’re ready."

Billy hesitated, then nodded. "Yeah. I think I am."

Artur didn’t question what he meant by that.

He just rose from the bed, held out his hand, and when Billy took it, he pulled him up gently without a word.

They moved through the morning together—quiet, steady, side by side.
