Chapter 429: Unexpected Encounter at the 429 Mall_1
Lu Yao fondly tousled Yao Meishu’s hair as they leisurely strolled through the shopping mall, with Lu Yao buying pretty much anything that Yao Meishu took a fancy to.
After all, it was not often they visited Kyoto, Lu Yao certainly wasn’t stingy with indulging Yao Meishu with her favourite things.
"Are we going to Beijing University to look for Yansi?"
Yao Meishu voiced her lingering doubts, her lips gently caught between her teeth.
"Hmm, we’ll head there after we’re done shopping, to bring him some gifts."
Lu Yao casually affirmed with a nod.
Besides going to Beijing University to look for Gu Yansi, they didn’t really know where else to find him; were they to find him at the Wen Mansion?
Neither Lu Yao nor Yao Meishu knew that Wen Wanyu had left the Wen family long ago, they still thought she resided there.
"Qingyang."
Yao Meishu’s arm was suddenly seized forcefully, a man’s frantic voice ringing in her ear. Yao Meishu winced in pain, her brow furrowed, revealing apparent displeasure.
She turned her head to find a handsome man. Despite being middle-aged, he still carried an air of vitality.
"Sir, you’re hurting me."
Yao Meishu’s brow furrowed lightly as she spoke in a rather gentle tone.
To judge from Lu Mohai’s attire, he was clearly a successful man of means, one of distinguished upbringing. Naturally, Yao Meishu couldn’t afford to be brusque with him.
Lu Yao frowned at Lu Mohai, saying nothing, pulling Yao Meishu into his embrace as a silent declaration of his claim over her.
"You’re not her."
Lu Mohai retreated a few steps. At first glance, Yao Meishu gave him the illusion of Ruan Qingyang, but with a second look, Lu Mohai realized he had mistaken her for someone else.
When he first saw Yao Meishu, Lu Mohai nearly lost his rationality, forgetting that Ruan Qingyang was dead and hoping deep down that she was still among the living.
He impulsively rushed over, only to discover that the woman in front of him looked nearly identical to Ruan Qingyang, yet she was not Ruan Qingyang.
"Sir, it’s rude to grab another man’s wife uninvited."
Lu Yao’s frown deepened as he regarded Lu Mohai with distinct displeasure, his dissatisfaction barely concealed.
"I’m sorry, I mistook you for someone else. You look like her, but you’re not her."
Lu Mohai expressed his regret for his actions. He took a few steps back, creating some distance between himself, Yao Meishu, and Lu Yao.
You look like her, but you’re not her.
A feeling of unease tugged at Yao Meishu’s heart, magnifying with each passing moment. She suddenly felt the urge to silence Lu Mohai.
As soon as Lu Mohai finished his sentence, Yao Meishu knew the woman he was referring to was Ruan Qingyang.
Ruan Qingyang.
Why, after so many years since your death, I wonder. What made you so irresistibly memorable?
So alike...
Lu Mohai suddenly remembered, Ruan Qingyang had a twin sister. He lifted his gaze to Yao Meishu, "Are you Ruan Qingyang’s sister?"
Despite being phrased as a question, coming from Lu Mohai, it was more of an assertion.
It would be impossible for him to mistake Yao Meishu as Ruan Qingyang’s sister because they looked so alike. Apart from minor differences and their personal demeanour, they were practically cast from the same mould.
"Yes, I am."
Yao Meishu had no idea how this man knew of Ruan Qingyang’s sister, but she had no choice but to admit it.
"Twins really are twins, cut from the same cloth."
Lu Mohai sighed, his thoughts drifting back to Ruan Qingyang.
Despite standing before Yao Meishu, whose face was a mirror image of Ruan Qingyang’s, his heart remained calm, not fluttering in the least.
Perhaps, the only one he loved, was the unique Ruan Qingyang after all.
Just like the saying goes,
I love strawberries, but not strawberry juice or strawberry candies.
I love you. It’s not enough to just look like you or act like you, it has to be you.
Yes, the person Lu Mohai loved was Ruan Qingyang. Therefore, even if someone looked like Ruan Qingyang, he wouldn’t be moved. His heart only beat for one person, Ruan Qingyang.
Cut from the same cloth?
Lu Yao regarded Yao Meishu with perplexity, his brows furrowed.
"Sir, your presence here is disrupting the pleasant outing for me and my husband."
Yao Meishu’s eyes glowed with apprehension as she began to regard Lu Mohai with animosity.
Frustrated.
Not realizing how many people in Kyoto knew Ruan Qingyang, Yao Meishu was irritated.
Being considered as a mere replacement for Ruan Qingyang made her feel terrible, even if it was just at first glance.
Sure enough, the people Ruan Qingyang knew in places like Kyoto were either wealthy or noble. Yao Meishu couldn’t but help feel a sense of resentment at the unfairness of it all. Why hadn’t it been her who came to Kyoto?
"I’m sorry."
After delivering his apology, Lu Mohai turned and left without a second glance.
Even though he knew Qin Yang’s death was somehow related to Yao Meishu, he was a rational man and wouldn’t trouble Yao Meishu without solid evidence.
Yao Meishu watched Lu Mohai’s retreating figure; in her eyes, this man appeared very successful, exuding the air of a accomplished man.
"Do you look just like your sister?"
Lu Yao grasped Yao Meishu’s arm, very lightly. He frowned, looking none too pleased.
Yao Meishu had never mentioned that she had a sister, let alone a twin. Was this something he, as her husband, wasn’t supposed to know?
"Yes."
Yao Meishu lowered her gaze, her head bowed.
"Why didn’t you ever tell me?"
Lu Yao asked.
"You like me, not my sister, so I don’t think I need to tell you. I barely see her once a year. Besides, if I tell you, would you stop liking me and start liking my sister?"
Yao Meishu lifted her head, looking directly into Lu Yao’s eyes as she spoke, her eyes glistening with unshed tears as though she had been wronged.
Yao Meishu felt a wave of guilt wash over her. There were things she knew Lu Yao would never figure out, as long as she kept silent.
"I’m sorry, that wasn’t my intention."
Lu Yao let out a sigh, gently draping an arm around Yao Meishu’s shoulder.
Indeed, how could he question Yao Meishu about this? It wasn’t something many people knew.
For a while, he had been doubtful, suspecting that the one he had fallen for at first sight was actually Yao Meishu’s sister, not Yao Meishu.
Lu Yao shook his head fiercely, casting away his unrealistic suspicion.
"I want to go and see Yansi now."
Yao Meishu managed to summon a faint smile, her voice was quiet when she spoke.
Lu Mohai’s appearance had upset her mood, and she was no longer in the mood for shopping.
