Chapter 241: Hold my hand tightly, don’t lose me_1
Each word and sentence showed care for Lu Qingyi, a detail that was emphasized in the conclusion of the letter.
Why?
Upon opening the second piece of the paper, a yellowed, incomplete photo fell out. A small part of the photo had been ruined by fire.
Lu Qingyi recognized it. It was a picture of her grandmother in her younger days, along with Yao Meishu, and another elderly man who she supposed must be her grandfather whom she had never met.
A small portion of the photo was burned, Lu Qingyi couldn’t make out what it was.
What could the other half be? Lu Qingyi had her doubts.
What remained were bits and pieces of the photo, only showing Yao Meishu and her grandmother, and no one else.
The last piece of paper underneath indicated that the jewelry inside had been given to her.
There was nothing else, nothing more about her.
Lu Qingyi closed the safe. Her heart was consumed by a sense of loss.
Nothing.
Lu Qingyi returned the safe to its original place, slowly descended the wooden stairs which creaked under her weight.
"Boyan, there is nothing," she said.
Lu Qingyi gently hugged Xu Boyan from behind, her head resting against his back, her voice barely above a whisper.
"I will help you find them."
Xu Boyan remained still, his voice gentle and soft.
He was determined to help Lu Qingyi find her biological parents.
Lu Qingyi locked the front door, then headed to the graveyard. It appeared to have been neglected for a very long time, covered in wild grass.
"Boyan, do you know how to use this?"
Lu Qingyi took a hoe out of the trunk of her car. She held it for a moment, then turned to ask Xu Boyan.
She had known how to use a hoe since she was a child, but Boyan had lived in Kyoto his whole life and had probably never seen one before.
"I do. Sit in the car, I’ll handle this,"
Dr. Xu took the hoe from Lu Qingyi, opened the car door for her, and asked her to wait inside.
He wouldn’t impose hard work on his beloved. She only needed to be obedient and listen.
How did the saying go? "I will earn money and provide for the family, and you just have to be beautiful."
"Are you sure you can handle it?"
Lu Qingyi examined Xu Boyan skeptically.
Xu Boyan was dressed in a tailored suit, each move was that of a distinguished young master. He hardly looked like the type to do yard work.
"You mustn’t say a man can’t do something, silly girl."
Xu Boyan gently pinched Lu Qingyi’s nose, and said with indulgence.
Lu Qingyi: "..."
Alright, then.
Lu Qingyi waited in the car while Xu Boyan rolled up his sleeves and began pulling weeds from the grave.
Her grandmother had not liked the city cemetery. She preferred the countryside fields and had asked to be buried not far from her home.
"Done."
After finishing, Xu Boyan placed the hoe back into the trunk of the car and spoke softly to Lu Qingyi.
"You’re soaked in sweat."
Lu Qingyi took out a tissue from her bag and gently wiped the sweat from Xu Boyan’s forehead.
"Go see your grandmother."
Xu Boyan took the joss paper and incense from under the bench and handed them to Lu Qingyi, slowly saying those words.
"Okay."
Lu Qingyi silently walked towards the short grave with the items in her hands.
Xu Boyan remained where he was, watching Lu Qingyi without interrupting her.
Lu Qingyi gently patted the soil on the grave, crouched down, and lit a stick of incense sticking it into the ground in front of the grave.
Using the light of the incense, she then lit the joss paper.
"Grandma, are you doing well over there? Yiyi misses you."
Lu Qingyi’s voice was incredibly soft, as if it may disperse with a single gust of wind.
"Grandma, I’m not Yao Meishu and Lu Yao’s daughter, did you know that? Is there anything you didn’t tell me?"
"Grandma, Yiyi misses you."
"Grandma, are you doing well over there?"
"Grandma, I’m in love now. His name is Xu Boyan. He is the young master of the Xu family from Kyoto. He treats me really well."
"Grandma, don’t worry about me over there, I have someone to take care of me."
"Grandma, who am I really? Who are my parents? Why didn’t you tell me?"
"Grandma..."
Kneeling in front of the grave, Lu Qingyi slowly began to speak. Each word, each sentence was spoken softly and gently.
She really missed her grandmother very much. She raised her head to look at the sky and her eyes began to sting.
She was truly sad.
Suddenly, her hand was held by a warm, sturdy one. Xu Boyan looked down at her, gently wiped the tears from the corner of her eyes.
"Don’t cry, it hurts my heart."
Xu Boyan knelt down beside her, with a voice so tender she could barely comprehend.
Lu Qingyi said nothing as she looked at Boyan.
"Hello, grandma. Nice to meet you. I’m Xu Boyan, Qingyi’s boyfriend."
As Xu Boyan said these words, he glanced at Lu Qingyi, who met his gaze with her own.
"You can rest assured that I will take good care of Qingyi. I’ll do my best to make her happy every day."
Xu Boyan knew that elders only wished for their grandchildren to live well and be happy every day.
"Grandma, I will stay with Qingyi forever. I planned to get a marriage certificate with Qingyi when she turns twenty because I, Xu Boyan, choose her for life."
Xu Boyan spoke seriously.
"Xu Boyan..."
Lu Qingyi felt a sting in her eyes again as tearing up involuntarily.
She had met the right person.
"Don’t cry; it hurts my heart."
Xu Boyan gently wiped the tears from Lu Qingyi’s eyes. His voice was tender and sweet, filled with adoration.
Lu Qingyi wanted to say okay, but she was choked up and unable to speak. She was just overwhelmed with emotion, on the verge of tears.
"Boyan, let’s go."
After kneeling for a long time, and half of the joss stick had burned down, Lu Qingyi slowly stood up and gently rubbed her sore legs.
"Okay."
Xu Boyan stood up, supporting Lu Qingyi.
"My grandma would have really liked you."
Lu Qingyi looked up at the sky and slowly spoke, a hint of a smile appeared at the corner of her mouth.
Xu Boyan was so good. If grandma was still around, she would have really liked him.
"That’s an honor."
Xu Boyan smiled.
Lu Qingyi looked at Xu Boyan, who was smiling sweetly. The happiness on his face was clear.
They say a man’s knees are precious and should not kneel easily. Xu Boyan was willing to kneel before the grave of her grandmother, and this made Lu Qingyi feel comforted and touched.
"Boyan, hold my hand tight. Don’t lose me, okay?"
Lu Qingyi inserted her hand into Xu Boyan’s and looked up at him.
