Chapter 118: 118 I’m waiting for you here_1
"Let’s go and see what’s going on over there."
Lu Yao frowned, seizing Yao Meishu’s hand, and began to stride over to Lu Qingyi.
"What for? If she wants to take the test or not, it’s up to her."
Yao Meishu slightly resisted him, the irritation evident in her tone.
Thinking of the slap she had received from Lu Qingyi, and how contemptuously the girl had treated her in the supermarket, anger welled up inside her.
"Meishu, our child has grown up."
Lu Yao patted Yao Meishu’s shoulder, his tone a mix of sentimentality and solemnity.
Their daughter was born and immediately given to his mother-in-law. Now, Lu Qingyi was grown up and had returned home to the Lu Family, so they needed to fulfill their parental duties.
"Lu Qingyi, it’s time for the exam."
Yao Meishu pointed to the examination area as she approached Lu Qingyi.
The hand laid on Lu Qingyi’s shoulder by Xu Boyan struck her as a blatant offense. And the insolence of Lu Qingyi, openly dating at her age, choosing a boyfriend who was years older...
Yao Meishu had to admit, it was hard to find another man with Xu Boyan’s looks. However, he was nothing more than a nobody, without status or identity.
"Lu Jiayue already went in."
Lu Qingyi lazily lifted her eyelids, her indifferent gaze landing on Yao Meishu.
So what if it was time for the exam?
"This is the college entrance exam, why are you acting so capricious?"
Lu Yao looked at Lu Qingyi, his voice laced with anger. He didn’t dare to acknowledge Xu Boyan.
"What has it got to do with you?"
Lu Qingyi raised an eyebrow as she toyed with a black marker, her voice icy cold.
Them? Pretending to show concern for her now?
She didn’t need it.
"My dear, you have three minutes left."
Xu Boyan looked at his watch, his voice was warm and soft.
His gaze rested on the top of Lu Qingyi’s head, completely ignoring Lu Yao and Yao Meishu.
"I’ll go find my exam room."
Lu Qingyi nodded, slowly getting up.
"I’ll wait for you here. Good luck with your exam."
Xu Boyan grabbed Lu Qingyi’s wrist, making a good-luck sign. A smile spread across his face.
Even though Lu Qingyi didn’t need him to cheer her on, he chose to do so. Rituals mattered.
"I want iced milk tea."
Lu Qingyi gave Xu Boyan a smile.
"Sure, good luck."
Xu Boyan grinned.
Lu Qingyi waved at Xu Boyan, then leisurely walked towards her exam room.
"You’re just distracting her."
Lu Yao had been holding his tongue for some time now. He glared at Xu Boyan as he spoke.
He had always thought that Lu Qingyi was as aloof as Yao Meishu had been at her age. However, the girl also had a softer side, which she showed to this unknown man, her so-called boyfriend.
"I give your words back to you."
Xu Boyan slowly stood up. His hand in his pocket, his eyes taking on a hard, cold look.
If Lu Yao hadn’t cared about Lu Qingyi before, why was he trying to interfere now?
"Name your price."
Lu Yao brought out several bank cards from his pocket and displayed them ostentatiously in front of Xu Boyan.
Everyone knew that Lu Qingyi was his daughter. Perhaps Xu Boyan was after his money.
"My daughter is destined to marry into a wealthy family."
Yao Meishu chimed in from the side.
Lu Qingyi was so beautiful, there was no way she would marry such a negligible man. Lu Qingyi was sure to marry a rich man.
If her daughter’s boyfriend was a man like Xu Boyan, it would be Yao Meishu who would lose face.
"Is she a trading commodity?"
Xu Boyan raised an eyebrow, his face hardening as he looked at the couple.
Money? He never lacked anything of the sort.
Marry into an affluent family? Did Yao Meishu regard Lu Qingyi as a tool for alliance through marriage?
"You’re just a petty merchant! Look at yourself! You think you’re worthy of my daughter?"
Yao Meishu pointed at Xu Boyan’s nose, her tone confrontational.
As soon as Yao Meishu’s words were out, she froze, as did Lu Yao. He looked at Yao Meishu in disbelief, finding it hard to believe such words could have come from her mouth.
Did age bring about materialism? Yao Meishu had always been indifferent to material wealth.
"I got ahead of myself... "
Yao Meishu covered her mouth, forcing a few laughs towards Lu Yao. Inside, she was in panic.
She had been too hasty and lost control over the tenor of her words.
"Having a mother like you, I feel sorry for the child. And as a father, it’s a failure to not be able to express the love in your heart."
Xu Boyan casually removed his hand from his pocket. His mockery was evident as he looked at Lu Yao and Yao Meishu.
His deep, probing eyes seemed to pierce through all facades. His voice was cold.
Lu Yao had tried to reach out to Lu Qingyi many times, but was restrained by Yao Meishu.
His love for Yao Meishu was so overwhelming that, given a choice between his daughter and his wife, he would unhesitatingly choose his wife.
Lu Yao was surprised. He hadn’t expected Xu Boyan to see through him.
"You’re talking nonsense!"
Yao Meishu felt suffocated as she retorted.
"The child would be thirsty after the test."
Having said this, Xu Boyan turned and left, leaving Lu Yao and Yao Meishu standing there, dumbfounded.
——
As soon as Lu Qingyi stepped into the examination room, the announcement came that the room was now closed to entrants.
There were thirty students in the room. Lu Qingyi’s seat was number six, at the last desk in the first row. When she entered, twenty-nine pairs of eyes turned her way.
No one had ever left it so late to arrive. Lu Qingyi was certainly the first.
The room was not exclusively made up of students from their school, it also included students from other schools. Whilst those from her school knew Lu Qingyi and showed no surprise, those from other schools secretly scoffed at her.
"Try to arrive sooner next time."
The examiner handed Lu Qingyi her papers and answer sheet, whispering a gentle warning.
How could she have such a cavalier attitude towards time? The language test was tightly scheduled. If she ran out of time for the written portion, wouldn’t she be devastated?
Lu Qingyi nodded. "Will try."
But she thought differently. Apart from the English subject, she planned to walk into the exam room at the last minute for all the other subjects.
The examiner went to the back, opened the rear door, and pulled up a chair. He sat down behind Lu Qingyi, near the back door.
Having received her exam materials, Lu Qingyi quickly glanced through them and sighed in disappointment.
The exam was ridiculously easy and didn’t present any challenge. She found it quite boring.
Misinterpreting her sigh as a sign of struggle, the examiner shook his head in sympathy.
