Chapter 198: Chapter 54: Investigation

A family’s land in Baiyan City.

The winter weather was bitterly cold, but it was almost spring, and the temperature was gradually rising.

A row of corpses remained untreated, slowly starting to hatch. But the Pei family had been waiting for the Inspector’s arrival, trying to preserve the scene as best as possible before the deaths.

Swish, swish, swish!

Several figures appeared in the courtyard one after another.

Zhan Ting and several elders of the Pei family stood before the corpses.

Pei Zeqi couldn’t help covering his nose and mouth, unable to adapt to the stench of decaying human bodies.

But Zhan Ting knelt down, carefully inspecting each corpse, showing not the slightest frown despite the overwhelming stench and revulsion.

It was evident that Zhan Ting, as an Inspector, was highly familiar with such situations.

Zhan Ting’s eyebrows knit ever more deeply as he examined each corpse.

After inspecting seven or eight corpses, he stood up again, a suspicion forming in his mind.

Seeing Zhan Ting remain unfazed by the stench, Pei Zeqi reluctantly uncovered his nose and mouth, the unbearable odor contorting his expression.

Pei Zeqi suppressed his revulsion, speaking in a low voice, "Sir, the deaths in this family are extremely peculiar. Despite our best efforts, we couldn’t uncover the specific cause."

"It is normal for you not to uncover it," Zhan Ting remarked sharply, his gaze sweeping the surroundings.

His figure flickered around the garden, examining the surrounding conditions again.

After five breaths.

Zhan Ting returned to the front of the corpses, his expression now somewhat grave.

"Sir?"

Seeing Zhan Ting’s displeased expression, Pei Zeqi cautiously called out.

"I have mostly deduced the cause," Zhan Ting pondered for a moment before speaking, "These people were killed by demonic methods. A disciple of the Demon Sect is hiding among you."

"Demon Sect?"

Pei Zeqi and the others were stunned collectively.

This was the first time they had heard such a statement. They only knew of sects like the southwestern hegemon, the Fire Crow Sect, but never a Demon Sect.

"May I ask, sir, which sect is this Demon Sect?" Pei Zeqi inquired curiously.

"The Demon Sect is not a specific sect but a general term for disciples using these methods. In terms of sheer number, the Demon Sect is no less than sects like the Fire Crow Sect, as numerous as the Huai River’s waters," Zhan Ting explained as he began to walk towards the courtyard exit, "I’ve determined the cause. The bodies can be dealt with; I’ll stay here a few days to root out the culprit."

"Thank you, sir."

Hearing this, Pei Zeqi and the others were delighted and bowed towards Zhan Ting.

Just as they stepped out of the small family’s gate, Zhan Ting, at the forefront, suddenly halted, his eyes fixated on the southwest.

"Hmph! Still dare to cause trouble!" Zhan Ting’s eyes flashed with cold light.

Swish!

His body suddenly shot out like a night owl, disappearing instantly from Pei Zeqi and the others’ view.

With a faint red glow on his body, he transformed into a swift arrow, shooting into the distant void.

"What did the Inspector see?" Pei Zeqi and the others were shaken, stretching their necks to look in the direction Zhan Ting flew.

From afar, in the pitch-black night, they could barely make out Zhan Ting becoming a tiny black dot, flying farther away.

The elders of the Pei family looked at each other.

"As a being of the Aperture Meridian Realm, the Inspector can sense the anomalies. The dangers among them are not something we can meddle with," Pei Zeqi said with a bitter smile, opting to wait quietly with the others in place.

Meanwhile, on the other side.

Zhan Ting’s eyes were locked onto the rapidly flying specter in the distance. Simultaneously, his energy gradually enveloped his entire body, increasing his speed by more than fifty percent.

After ten breaths.

Zhan Ting rapidly closed in on the specter, and the opponent finally sensed danger approaching.

"Specter? So large?"

A sense of surprise passed through Zhan Ting’s mind.

He had thought it was just a minor demon sect ghost wreaking havoc, hiding well.

Unexpectedly, it had become such a formidable existence.

But as a four-layer Aperture Meridian being, he felt no fear of the specter.

"Demon, prepare to die!"

Zhan Ting shouted, his eyes seeming to burn with flames.

His long blade in hand also seemed to have a hint of red flames burning.

Whiz!

The long blade suddenly flew out, striking like lightning towards the gigantic ghostly shadow.

"Hehehe."

The specter emitted two glowing circular spots above, constantly shifting like eyes staring at Zhan Ting.

Its body, however, continuously morphed, seemingly splitting a plume of black qi, shooting towards the red glow.

Both attacks were swift, meeting in an instant.

Clang!

Zhan Ting’s long blade let out a soft hum, spinning incessantly in mid-air after the collision.

"Aperture Meridian Middle Stage!" Zhan Ting’s heart sank.

The long blade and the black qi were evenly matched, indicating the opponent was on the same level as him.

"Once more!"

A strong fighting spirit surged in Zhan Ting’s eyes.

As Inspector of the Upper City, his strength was notably outstanding; otherwise, he wouldn’t be patrolling the various anomalies.

Against this anomaly on par with him, he held absolute confidence.

Swish!

The rapidly spinning long blade suddenly ceased, pointing sharply towards the specter once more.

"Go!"

A chilling light gleamed in Zhan Ting’s eyes as he shouted, simultaneously stomping on the ground and charging again towards the specter.

As his body soared, a swirling fire-blue energy continuously seeped out from him, like alcohol burning all over his body.

"Baiyan City’s Inspector. Let me see how capable you are!"

The specter sneered internally upon seeing the opponent’s attire.

Its pupils flared with luminescent flames.

Sssss!

Like night winds blowing through the dead branches of an ancient tomb, carrying wisps of chill and unspeakable sorrow.

With endless black flames erupting from its body, like black ink spreading in water. The temperature around plummeted, white frost visibly encasing the branches beneath it.

Bang!

The black flame sprayed again, colliding with the long blade trailing a stream of orange-red light.

Ting, ting, ting.

The black flames clashed repeatedly with the long blade, contacting, bouncing off.

But Zhan Ting’s body was already upon it.

With his fists like lightning, he instantly engaged the dark shadow in combat.

Bang!

The sound of an explosion echoed through the void.

Fists wrapped in blood-red flames collided abruptly with claws transformed by the specter.

Their fists didn’t fully contact, yet the surging energy from their bodies continually clashed, corroded, merged, then finally extinguished.

Bang, bang, bang!

Zhan Ting’s fist techniques were tremendously powerful, his punches like ferocious storms, kicks like dragons leaping from the sea, each strike seeming to tear through the air.

Bang, bang, bang!

The specter didn’t retreat, its movements nimble and eerie, smoke gathering and dispersing, as if always finding Zhan Ting’s flaw inadvertently, like a viper lurking in shadows.

Both sides engaged relentlessly, neither conceding an inch.

"Mere fiend, dare to cause trouble!"

Seeing the specter’s strength seemed equal to his, Zhan Ting grew enraged.

"Divine Aperture, release!"

Zhan Ting’s eyes seemed to emit beams of light, and the energy within him surged violently.

Bang!

Several beams seemed to light up within Zhan Ting, his body flaring up like flames doused in oil, erupting instantly. If he was once a calmly burning candle, now he was a fiercely burning wood core.

As the flames intensified, his body swelled, matching the specter’s size.

The flames on the long blade also roared intensely, emitting boundless explosive energy.

"Specter, prepare to die!"

Zhan Ting shouted, the flames seeming to mold into his shape, with a punch delivered.

That punch, as though gathering the world’s entire strength, possessed unfathomable might, enough to shake mountains and rivers.

Whoosh!

As the punch swung out, the air seemed to tear under the unrivaled power, issuing sharp detonation sounds like thunderclaps nearby.

Where the punch wind reached, the surroundings blurred, the space seemingly warped and distorted under the force.

Zhan Ting’s eyes fiercely locked into the specter’s pupils.

"Domineering Punch, Shattering the Sky!"

The punch, mingling unfathomable power, struck towards the specter.
