Unholy Player
Chapter 129: Intentional?

Chapter 129: Intentional?

"What is this?" Henry asked, his eyes fixed on the object in Adyr’s hand. It had a faint metallic sheen but looked, at a glance, like an ordinary stone—easily overlooked unless studied closely.

"Take it," Adyr said, grinning as he held it out.

Henry didn’t hesitate. He knew Adyr wasn’t the type to play cheap jokes. If he was offering something, there was a reason for it—something important to notice.

And the moment he held it, he understood.

"Something’s... moving inside? Or pulsing?" Henry’s eyes widened. He turned to Adyr with sudden intensity.

"Is this a Spark?" Rhys asked before Henry could.

He was well-informed on the subject. Even if he hadn’t personally engaged with one, he kept close track of everything related to the new world. Both he and Henry had seen sketches and descriptions of Sparks before, though never in stone form. Still, thanks to other evolved players—especially Victor—they had visual references and a growing understanding. They also knew Sparks could appear in any shape, any form. But this was the first time they were seeing a real, living one—and the astonishment was undeniable.

"Yes," Adyr replied. "But that’s not the strange part."

He pointed calmly to the Cannibal’s abdomen—stitched shut, skinless, raw. "The strange part is where I found it."

"Henry, is something like that even possible?" Rhys asked, crouching beside the Cannibal to examine his body.

"If you don’ ge’ tha’ ugly face away from me... I’ll bide your nose off... rip i’ apar’..." Cannibal hissed, his voice strained as dried blood cracked in his throat. Despite everything, his fear was clearly reserved for Adyr alone. The ego was still there. The delusion of superiority hadn’t fully faded.

"You don’t even have teeth. Shut your mouth," Rhys said coldly, then slapped him across the face.

He had long despised this man, the one responsible for the deaths of teams he had trained and served alongside for years. If Adyr weren’t in the room, Rhys might have finished him on the spot. But he chose to settle for the slap.

Still, his condition looked worse than what death could offer, so Rhys chose to leave it at that.

Henry opened his mouth to respond to Rhys’s question. "I’ve never heard of anything like that happening. Not even in the intel we’ve received from other cities."

He looked genuinely clueless. "I’ll have to report this to the City Manager. If they still have any contact with the Mad Scientist, maybe he’ll know something."

They were aware that Sparks radiated energy capable of affecting both living and non-living matter around them, but that only applied to the other world. There was no known explanation for a Spark existing on this side.

"And according to what he said, Cannibal is not the only one who made contact with a Spark. The other Overlords showed signs of the same power boost." Adyr added another piece of information. He didn’t yet know the cause either, but it raised important questions.

There was only one possible explanation that came to mind.

Someone—a player—had intentionally brought Sparks into this world. Whether sold, given away, or planted with some deeper motive, it had been done deliberately.

But why?

The invasion of the other world was still recent. Very few players had even managed to capture Sparks, and those who did were unlikely to part with them. Sparks were vital to survival on the other side. Trading them away made no sense.

"Anyway, I want something," Adyr said, shifting the topic. He had already decided there was no use speculating further for now.

"First of all, I assume I get merit points for all this, right? Not just for the intel, which is now a confirmed fact, but also for capturing your terrorist?" He grinned slightly.

Henry looked at him, then patted his shoulder. "Boy, don’t worry. I won’t let you walk away dissatisfied."

Having secured that promise, Adyr continued. "If I wanted to give you this Spark for research, how much merit would you offer in return?"

This time, Henry was taken aback. That wasn’t a question he could answer on the spot. It would require input from the research council.

This was the first time a real, living Spark had been discovered in this world. No other player had even reported capturing a second Spark in the other world yet let alone one that had appeared on this side.

Even if they had, handing it over for research would have been out of the question. Sparks directly increased a player’s survival chances. No one would give them up willingly.

That made Adyr’s offer priceless, especially now, knowing that Sparks could exist freely in this world.

If they could study one directly, it might reveal crucial truths about Spark biology and nature. That knowledge could help prevent some unknown disaster before it arrives.

"I’ll bring it to the research council and get back to you," Henry said plainly.

He had no doubt the offer would be accepted. The only question was how much merit it was worth.

It couldn’t be too little—this was no minor act. But it also couldn’t be too much. Showing blatant favoritism could spark unrest among other players. And right now, they couldn’t afford to lose trust.

"Okay. If everything’s done, I’m leaving," Adyr said.

"And when you’re finished questioning him, I’ll return to collect him. He’s mine now. I’m just lending him to you. So return him alive, please."

He gestured toward the Cannibal, then turned and left the room without waiting for a response.

His words—and the way he said them—came off as arrogant. But that was intentional.

With the power he held, the potential he carried, and the strategic importance of his presence—not just to the city but to the world—he had to become someone capable of bearing that weight.

He wouldn’t let anyone use him or treat him like a threat. Maintaining control was the only way to keep the balance—and if it didn’t come naturally, he’d force it into place.
