Chapter 120: Questioning

Adyr felt the fat mutant go limp beneath him. He gave the wire a final pull, then detached it and clipped it back onto his belt for later use.

This one had pushed him a little harder than the others, but he was much stronger now. If only he had sharper, more durable blades that could actually get through mutant hide, the job would’ve been easier.

Even though these mutants were only under the influence of a Rank 2 Spark, they were far stronger and more durable than the wolves he had fought before.

The difference was clear. The wolves had mutated from normal animals, but these men were already powerful mutants before the Spark enhanced them further.

"You keep the gun," Adyr said as he lifted the corpse from the ground.

The STF operative gave a nod and crawled back to his corner. He tucked the weapon behind his back and resumed his silent wait.

Adyr lifted the massive body with ease and placed it on the table. His blades weren’t sharp or durable enough for this mutant’s thick hide, but he still managed to force the skull open and extract the crystal inside. Just like before, he hung the corpse from a meat chain and secured it with wire, positioning it beside the previous one, making it look as if the two had been working together.

He was confident the trick would work again.

He faded back into the darkness, disappearing into the shadows, waiting for his next target.

In the corner, the STF operative was struggling not to laugh despite the situation. The others watched in stunned silence, some lowering their heads in disbelief. No one made a sound.

It felt like they were trapped inside a theater performance, and the one behind this scene—the one hiding in the dark—was the devil who wrote it.

A short while later, the door cracked open, and another mutant entered. Like the previous one, this one was also fat, clearly one of the higher ranks.

"Silas, are you out of your mind? What took so long?" He said in a panicked voice after spotting his friend.

Silas had gone to check the meat a while ago but never returned. With no sign of movement, the boss had gotten angry and sent this one in. His face showed real concern.

"Marek, Silas, let me tell you, if we don’t bring the meat to the boss in 1 minute, we can consider ourselves dead," the mutant muttered, quickly approaching the table to check the meat.

When he saw the body still whole on the cutting table, panic kicked in.

"Are you two fucking idiots? Why is it still not prepared?"

Those were his last words.

Like the one before him, he was suddenly caught by the neck, slammed to the ground, and pinned under Adyr’s weight with wires tightening around his throat. But this time, Adyr didn’t ask the STF operative to kill him immediately.

As he choked the mutant with the wires and held his arms down with his knees, Adyr leaned in slightly and asked, "How many more are there with your boss?"

When he had arrived on the first floor, his first move was to scout the area. Before reaching this butchering room, he had already killed two other mutants. That meant the only ones left had to be on the fourth floor.

"Mgghhghh," the mutant gasped. He couldn’t get a word out.

Adyr ignored it. Instead of loosening the wires, he pulled them tighter.

"I said, how many more are there on the fourth floor?"

"Ighhgcan’thhh..." The mutant kept struggling. He seemed to be trying to say something, but no clear words came out.

Adyr didn’t care. He didn’t ease the grip to let him speak. He tightened the wire further. It felt less like he wanted answers and more like he was just playing with the man.

The STF operative noticed the mutant trying to speak but didn’t step in. So far, Adyr had handled everything perfectly.

"So you don’t want to speak, huh?" Adyr said with a mocking laugh.

"I wonder how long you’ll last without air. Someone like you probably has strong lungs. I’d say maybe 3 or 4 minutes before you start to fade, huh?"

His tone was cold, detached.

"But I’m sure that won’t be enough to kill someone like you. You look like you can take quite a lot." He tightened the wires a little more.

The mutant jerked again, throat gurgling.

"You will feel a little longer before your organs start to fail. Vision narrows. Ears ring. You’ll feel heat crawling up your spine, and your heart will pound harder than it ever has... until it doesn’t."

Adyr’s voice grew colder.

"But it still won’t kill you." He tightened the wire again.

"It usually takes 2 to 3 minutes before brain death begins. But someone like you? Maybe 5. Could be longer if you’re unlucky."

He leaned in closer, eyes steady. "And the pain doesn’t stop when you lose consciousness. Not right away. Your body will still spasm for a bit. Muscle memory. Electrical misfires. Dying nerves clenching whatever they can reach."

He shifted his weight to apply more pressure with his knees.

"You’ll die slowly. Feel every change happening inside your body. But don’t blame me. It’s not because I need you to suffer. It’s just how the body works."

There was no hatred in his tone. No pleasure. Just a cold, detached fact.

"Mmghhg..." With the wire cutting deeper into his throat, terror finally surfaced in the mutant’s eyes. His thrashing slowed, replaced by a faint tremble.

"What? Do you want to speak?" Adyr asked, loosening the wire just enough.

"Two..." the mutant croaked, then broke into a fit of coughing.

"Two what?" Adyr kicked him in the head as he asked.

The mutant didn’t feel pain from the impact, but something inside him twisted. He didn’t want to endure more.

"Two m-more. There are two more with the boss... in the dining hall..." the mutant finally said, his voice barely holding together.

A faint smile touched Adyr’s otherwise indifferent face. "Good."

The mutant lifted his head slightly, hope flickering in his expression. "N-Now, can you l-let me go?"

But the only response was Adyr pulling the wire tight again, this time with full force.

"Yeah, you can go. Bye," Adyr said flatly, then gave a signal to the STF operative.

Pht.

Pht.

Moments later, another mutant joined his companions, hanging from a meat chain and fixed in place beside the others. The three of them now stood side by side like workers at their post, facing the butcher table as if preparing the finest meal of their lives.
