Chapter 42: A Talk With System

DING!

[System Reboot Complete.]

[System Upgrade Successfully.]

Ethan blinked at the glowing blue panel hovering above his vision. He rubbed his eyes.

"Wait, what? Reboot? When did you even start rebooting?! Normally shouldn’t I have gotten a warning?"

The system chimed in, its voice as smug as ever.

[System initiated auto-reboot when you are enjoying towel fanservice. Peak simp behavior detected. Emergency optimization required.]

Ethan’s eyebrow twitched.

"...The Fuck?" he said, sitting up in bed.

The system didn’t stop.

[Diagnostic Summary: Host survived assassination attempt. Suffered internal bleeding, a broken arm, minor burns... and mental pleasure caused by excessive exposure to forbidden t view. Emotional overload. Therefore, reboot triggered.]

"SHUT UP!" Ethan shouted in his mind. "That’s called appreciating culture! I’m a man of taste!"

[Sure. Let’s call it that. Culture.]

Ethan buried his face into his pillow for a second, groaning.

"Okay, forget that. Just tell me what the upgrade changed. And also—what’s up with Natalie’s affinity number? You’ve never shown me values for non-heroines before."

[Upgrade Notice: From now on, the system will display Affinity Values for anyone you’re emotionally or physically attracted to.]

"...Wait, what?"

[Anyone. Heroine, side heroine, stranger, even a random guy—if you’re into that.]

"CUT THAT LAST PART!" Ethan barked mentally.

[Just saying. We support all choices. #NoJudgmentSystem]

Ethan dragged his hand down his face. "Alright, back on track. Affinity for people I’m attracted to—"

[You’re into her. Which, let’s be honest, was obvious the second you turned into a statue staring at wet cleavage.]

"I WAS SHOCKED!" Ethan protested.

The system beeped.

[Introducing: Bonded Skill Sharing.]

"Sounds like a dating sim."

[Because it kind of is.]

"...Go on."

[If the Affinity of a person you’re attracted to reaches 100, you unlock Bonded Skill Sync. You can then use one of their natural skills, stronger than their own. Or choose to allow them to borrow one of your system-gifted skills.]

Ethan sat up straighter.

"Wait, wait... you’re saying if Natalie’s affinity hits 100, and let’s say she’s a master of marksmanship..."

[You’ll become a better shooter than her. Twice as good. Auto-aim included. Headshots guaranteed. Peak coolness unlocked.]

"...That’s broken."

[Welcome to the upgraded Perfect Life System. We’re done playing fair.]

Ethan’s brain started turning.

"So if I play my cards right... I can turn every girl I like into a buff upgrade source? While also giving them powers?"

[Correct. Relationship = Power. Emotion = Skill. Love = Profit.]

"Okay now you’re sounding like a shady stockbroker," Ethan muttered. "What else?"

[Daily Task System Activated.]

"Huh?"

[As you pursue your perfect life, the system will now generate one Daily Task per day. Completing it will earn you stat points, money, affinity bonuses, or rare rewards. Refusing it... will result in nothing. I’m not cruel.]

"Oh, thank god. No penalties."

[Unless you really slack off. Then we’ll reconsider.]

"...Nice joke."

[Not a joke.]

DING!

[System Update: New Panels Unlocked — Mission Tracker & Side Objectives Activated.]

A transparent, digital interface shimmered into view, floating before Ethan’s eyes. Clean design. Sleek layout. Cool blue light.

"Whoa... this is new."

The screen divided into categories:

Daily Missions

Main Missions

Uncompleted Missions

Ethan raised a brow.

[Uncompleted Missions: Find Serena.Uncover the Truth About it.]

[Time Limit: None. Rewards: Hidden.]

Ethan stared at the screen.

"It’s gonna take a while to complete this mission."

Another alert popped up.

[New Daily Mission Generated:]

Do 100 push-ups

Do 100 pull-ups

Do 100 sit-ups

Run 5 miles

Reward: $2,000

System Remark: Complete this only after recovery. System may be snarky, but not heartless.

Ethan narrowed his eyes.

He moved on quickly, selecting the Main Missions tab.

[Main Mission 1:]

Earn $5 million within 7 days.

Reward: x2 Rebate on All Money Spent During the Week.

Penalty: None this time. But don’t get lazy. Future missions won’t be this nice.

Ethan’s mouth twitched.

"Five million dollars? In a week?!"

He exhaled deeply.

"Okay... it’s not impossible. Just hard. Real hard. But I like money. Especially double money."

He scrolled to the second mission.

[Main Mission 2:]

Make Rhea Marclaire fall in love with you. Affinity: 100 required.

Reward: 35% Stake in the Marclaire Foundation.

Ethan paused.

His expression changed slightly.

"Rhea. I would have done this mission without the reward. In the original story she really struggled hard to rebuild the company and if I obtain 35% of the marclair company, it’s not going to be that hard."

Still he looked back at the first mission.

Five million dollars.

Even without penalty, his pride wouldn’t let him slack.

Ethan stood from the bed, slowly stretching his body.

"Time to become more rich."

-------------------------------------

The room was colossal, so large that footsteps echoed for several seconds. The only object in the center was a throne. Black, sleek, and gothic. Above it hung a massive emblem, the Raven crest. Crimson wings spread over a silver circle, its eyes like red rubies watching every soul who entered.

A single man sat on that throne.

His left leg bounced rapidly, the tapping echoing like war drums on the polished obsidian floor. He wore a fitted black suit with silver cufflinks shaped like talons. His face, shadowed beneath the dim overhead light, was unreadable.

Before him, a man kneeled, trembling.

His name was Rex.

Sweat dripped from his forehead as he bowed deeply, but he didn’t dare raise his head. One wrong breath, and his life could end here.

The man on the throne finally spoke. His voice was smooth, calm... yet every word sliced like a blade.

"So... you failed again, Rex."

Rex’s lips trembled. "Sir... the target survived, but—"

The man cut him off, voice turning sharp.

"Twenty-five years ago... because of your mistake, I couldn’t kill my own sister and her husband."

Rex flinched.

"Now, because of your failure again, her son didn’t die."

He raised his head slightly. "Sir, please understand. As you said I contacted someone capable of doing it. A full team. Trained. One of them had a 100% success record..."

"And yet?" The man’s tone chilled. "The boy lived."

Silence.

"You’re telling me... a group of elite killers couldn’t take out a single person?"

The man reached beneath his coat. Slowly.

Click.

He pulled out a sleek, matte-black pistol and without warning—

BANG!

The shot rang through the chamber.

Rex gasped, clutching his arm as the bullet pierced clean through his shoulder. Blood spilled onto the pristine floor.

But he didn’t scream. Not even a groan.

He simply bowed lower, gritting his teeth. "Forgive me, sir. Please... give me one more chance. I’ll handle it personally."

The man stood slowly from the throne. His full height cast a long shadow across the marble floor. His dark eyes were emotionless, like black holes.

"No."

Rex froze.

"I told you already." His voice lowered. "Now is not the time. This was our only chance"

He turned away, walking to the giant window that overlooked the city skyline. Red lights blinked outside.

"That old man is watching us. We can’t make another move... yet."

Rex stayed kneeling, blood dripping steadily.

"When I say it’s time... you will go. You will kill the boy."

The man turned back, eyes cold and final.

"And if you fail again..."

His voice dropped to a whisper. But the weight behind it was heavier than a gunshot.

"It won’t be your arm next time. It’ll be your head."

Rex bowed even lower. "Yes, sir."

The man returned to the throne and sat down, tapping his leg again.
