Chapter 41 Helping Others to the End
Chapter 41: Chapter 41 Helping Others to the End
Yuan’er’s father, Luo Weisong, is a kind old man, while Yuan’er’s mother, Song Rou, is a strong woman.
Luo Weisong often says that Le Tong has the shadow of Mrs. Luo in her younger days, and often jokes with Le Tong, asking her to acknowledge him and Mrs. Luo as her godfather and godmother.
Le Tong admits that she is indeed attached to this warm family atmosphere at the Luo Family, so every time she goes there, she stays all day long. Today is no exception.
However, this illusion of happiness feels like something stolen from someone else; after enjoying the initial pleasure and joy, there is more apprehension, unease, and disappointment.
Therefore, even if Mr. Luo and Mrs. Luo frequently invite her over, she often only goes once every month or two. She fears that if she goes too often, she will become addicted, and when she can’t quit, she’ll realize that those warm feelings are actually someone else’s.
When sending Le Tong home, Yuan’er said, "Tongtong, my dad asked you to come to our house next week, why did you refuse again?"
Yuan’er doesn’t understand her friend’s feelings, because similar things have happened too often, and inevitably she complains, thinking her friend isn’t treating her like a proper sister.
"I don’t have time next week, the company has a lot of work and I have to work overtime."
Le Tong still uses work as an excuse, but Yuan’er doesn’t buy it, relentlessly lecturing her.
"Overtime, overtime, do you really think you’re made of iron? Have you seen how thin you’ve gotten?"
Le Tong playfully hugged her shoulder, "Aren’t I losing weight recently?"
Le Tong’s life experiences make it hard for her to expect anything from those around her, probably for fear that the higher the expectations, the greater the disappointment. Naturally, she couldn’t share this sentiment with Yuan’er.
But today Yuan’er was truly angry, and Le Tong coaxed her all the way home; even when the car stopped at Le Tong’s lane, Yuan’er hadn’t calmed down.
"Get lost, I’ll never bother with you again..."
Such words, Yuan’er has said countless times, but in just a few days, she would call Le Tong again. Most of the time she gets angry because Le Tong doesn’t know how to treasure herself and often subconsciously refuses others’ goodwill; similar situations have occurred too many times...
When Le Tong got out of the car, Yuan’er lightly kicked her on the backside, "Get lost..."
Le Tong was long accustomed to Yuan’er’s anger; she alighted from the car with a laugh and waved to the grumpy Miss Luo, then swung her backpack and breezily turned into the lane.
From the stair entrance, she saw a shadow pacing at her doorstep; instinctively, she stepped back two paces. That person likely heard the sound too, stopped and looked over.
"Hey, girl, you’re back!"
It turned out to be the man selling roasted sweet potatoes, who lived across from Le Tong.
"Hello." Le Tong lifted her foot and headed towards her door.
As she approached, the honest man rubbed his hands, looking at her with a face full of gratitude.
"This morning, thank you. My wife said if it weren’t for you, our Wenwen would be in trouble!"
Le Tong stood at her doorstep, facing the honest man.
"Brother Zhang, helping neighbors is no big deal. How’s Wenwen doing now?"
Le Tong had handled the hospitalization procedures for the child, so she knew this man was Zhang Yi, and the hospitalized little girl was Zhang Wen.
"The doctor said it was fortunate she was sent to the hospital in time; her condition is stable now. It will probably take three days of inpatient treatment for her to recover," Zhang Yi replied truthfully.
Seeing him holding a large bag, seemingly preparing to go out, Le Tong said, "Brother Zhang, you must be going to the hospital to accompany your wife and Wenwen, get going. If you’re late, the hospital won’t let you in."
Le Tong had lived here for a long time, always maintaining a decent relationship with the neighbors, and although she previously had no interactions with Zhang Yi and his wife, they seemed like straightforward, honest country folks, giving Le Tong a natural fondness for them.
"Oh, I just closed the stall. I’m heading to be with them. Girl, you love roasted sweet potatoes, right? Here’s a few I have left, take them if you don’t mind,"
He said, handing over a paper bag with warmth still clinging to it. His sincere and careful demeanor made it hard for Le Tong to refuse, so she accepted.
"Thank you, Brother Zhang."
Seeing her accept the bag, Zhang Yi sighed with relief and then, stealthily, stuffed a crumpled thing into Le Tong’s hand.
"Girl, the hospital deposit... here’s five hundred first... I’ll give you more in a few days..."
Zhang Yi’s face turned bright red, stuttering and lowering his head, not daring to look Le Tong in the eye.
Le Tong glanced at the wad of money in her hand and then at Zhang Yi.
Considering the couple and their child were living here, without skills or capital, relying solely on that sweet potato stand to make a living, their life must be tough. After thinking it over, she stuffed the money back into his coat pocket.
"Brother Zhang, keep the money for buying nutrition for Wenwen. It’s not much, and I don’t need it urgently. Pay me back when you’re able."
Zhang Yi raised his head, his face even redder, "But... but this is so embarrassing..."
Le Tong, fearing he might return the money, quickly took out her keys while unlocking the door and spoke to the man behind her.
"Let’s leave it at that; thank you for the sweet potatoes."
Zhang Yi hesitantly took the money out of his pocket, wanting to pass it to Le Tong, but didn’t dare touch her, anxiously calling out behind her, "Girl... girl..."
Le Tong ignored him, opened the door, slipped inside, then turned her head to tell him.
"Hurry up, after ten, the hospital won’t let family members in."
Zhang Yi saw Le Tong close the iron door and had no choice but to stand outside and say, "Alright... thank you, girl..."
...
"Aunt Huang, have some roasted sweet potatoes!"
Early the next morning, Le Tong placed two still-warm roasted sweet potatoes in front of the cashier Aunt Huang.
The sweet potatoes were said to be leftover by Zhang Yi, but in fact, they were likely kept for her on purpose, numbering up to seven or eight.
Le Tong had one last night, and warmed the remaining ones in the microwave before heading to the company for breakfast.
"Oh my, Tongtong is so considerate, knowing Aunt Huang loves this..."
A decade or so ago, city people were all about eating refined foods. But now, since eating too well has caused various issues, they advocate eating grains again. Sweet potatoes have recently become popular among Ji Family’s female white-collars.
Le Tong returned from the finance department to her office, sat down, peeled a sweet potato, and was about to eat when there was the sound of a door opening behind her.
She quickly stood up, turned around, and looked at the man who walked out, "President."
Ji Rui held a stack of documents, his gaze brushed over the sweet potato in Le Tong’s hand, a flicker of surprise in his eyes, "Is that your breakfast?"
