Chapter 27: Chapter 27 Baobao is Very Happy
On Monday, Le Tong routinely placed the coffee in front of Ji Rui.
Ji Rui, breaking from his usual self, looked up at Le Tong after she set down the coffee and said, "Thank you!"
Le Tong was a bit stunned, staring at Ji Rui, wondering if President Ji had been possessed by some strange creature.
If she remembered correctly, in all her time as his secretary, this was the first time he had said "thank you" to her.
In fact, not only did Le Tong find it unbelievable, but Ji Rui himself was also startled by the sudden thank you that escaped him. He took a slight sip of the coffee to cover his little awkwardness.
It took a moment for Le Tong to react, and she grinned at Ji Rui, "President, you’re too kind. It’s my job!", thinking that his thank you was for this aromatic and delicious coffee.
Ji Rui was once again momentarily dazzled by her smiling face. That day at his house, she also spoke to him with a bright smile, and he thought it was the environment since at the Ji Family, he had hardly seen her smile at him this way.
But now, in the same office, she was generously beaming at him. So, it wasn’t because of a different environment, but because his attitude towards her had changed?
"No, I mean about Saturday. Baby had a great time and enjoyed the meal!"
If Ji Rui was cold to others, then Ji Baby was undoubtedly the one he cared most about and invested the most emotion in.
Le Tong, upon hearing this, laughed even brighter than before, her sparkling eyes forming crescent moons as she looked at him, "Really? I knew it, kids love that kind of food."
Le Tong felt genuinely happy, because her cooking made a child who was without his mommy feel happy and joyful.
"Hmm." Ji Rui responded indifferently.
If he were an ordinary person, he might have followed up on Le Tong’s words by describing how happy Baby was that day. But Ji Rui was no ordinary person; he wasn’t in the habit of chitchatting, nor did he know how!
Seeing Ji Rui’s indifferent reaction, Le Tong felt a bit smug and coughed awkwardly to cover her embarrassment.
"President, if there’s nothing else, I’ll go now."
As Le Tong turned to leave, she heard Ji Rui say, "That... "
Le Tong paused, her gaze returning to his face. "Hmm?! Does the President have any instructions?"
Ji Rui put down his cup, looked her up and down, and asked stiffly.
"How’s your injury? Is it better?" Seeing how much effort Le Tong put in to make Baby happy, he felt it was only right to ask about her injury. But for the usually aloof President Ji, showing concern for others was especially awkward.
Le Tong was stunned for a moment, not expecting that someone as cold as President Ji would concern himself with a secretary’s minor injury.
Le Tong smiled gratefully at him, "Oh, thank you for your concern, President! I went for a follow-up at the hospital yesterday and it’s all good now!"
"Mm, go on with your work then!"
Ji Rui said, shifting his gaze from Le Tong’s smiling face back to his screen, feeling perhaps a bit better than he did in the morning.
Indeed, having a cup of coffee to kick off the workday is very important!
Yet he didn’t consider that the reason for his improved mood might have other possibilities. For instance, starting the day facing a little secretary smiling like a blossoming flower...
Le Tong, too, was in a great mood because the usually stern-faced President actually thanked her.
This made Le Tong feel that her efforts were respected, and she seemed to have gained the respect of the President himself.
This rare respect, even if just a little bit, was a thrill for Little Secretary Le Tong, who usually faced exploitation and pressure at the lowest level.
In high spirits, Little Secretary Le worked with remarkable efficiency that day. She finished translating and printing the remaining third of the materials for the Planning Department in just two hours.
After finishing, she stretched and glanced at the time on the bottom right corner of her computer, which showed it was already lunchtime.
Le Tong reached over to grab the phone to ask about today’s menu, but the phone rang before she could.
"Hello, Ji Family."
"Come in!" Ji Rui’s cold, firm voice came through the receiver.
