Chapter 640: Like the gates of hell

Chapter 640: Like the gates of hell

At night, all the different family members who were on the yacht moved to the submarine. It was time for the mission, so hugs and assurances were given. A few tears were even shed by the old madam and mama Chi especially which resulted in more assurances.

Due to age, the old master would sit this one out and leave it to the young ones. He stayed behind, watching those who ventured onto the island on a screen in the control room of the huge submarine.

"Nobody die." Muyang told everyone before they got into the submersibles which would be delivering them on to the island.

They landed close to a narrow cove through which they would have to pass through before reaching the first obstacle, an electric fence that surrounded almost the entirety of the island. It really should have taken a long year or two to fence off all of it because the island was not small.

Additionally, it’s terrain was rough and rocky with a thick dangerous forest. There were watch towers close to the fence and cameras every twenty steps. The security here was tight, as the guards were armed and rotating around.

Nothing would be stepping foot on the island without the knowledge of the occupants.

But these were no ordinary intruders, they came wearing invisible suits which made it easy to move unseen. But they also had to be very quiet to ensure that they were unheard because there were noise measuring devices on top of the electric fence.

They made it through the tiny cove in a short period of time and came out at the other end of the island, heading into the forest.

She stopped first and turned around and said to to the others, "Everyone, follow my footsteps precisely, step where I step. If I run, you run and if I take two steps you do the same. As you all know from before there are landmines buried in some parts of the ground. Until we get to their farms, we have to be careful."

"Mm,"

"Yes sister-in-law."

Nobody was questioning her anymore since she discovered the island with her own resources and mapped out the entirety of the place. She also knew the security parameters better than they did.

She took the first step stepping onto the narrow footpath which had long been cleared up by the residents of the island.

As they moved, she would stop and plant small red flags along the footpath, warning the others who would follow them later of the potential presence of land mines.

They also had to avoid pits, cages, nets and hunting traps meant to catch animals and humans. These were old school traps, like holes dug in the ground with sharp sticks on the inside guaranteed to ensure that whoever fell inside died was pierced and bled to death.

"Are they trapping wild pigs?" Ringo murmured.

"Does that make us the wild pigs in this case?" one of the triplets asked.

"Ha-ha-ha." his brother laughed sarcastically and shoved his head. "Keep moving."

They planted blue flags anywhere they found a hunting trap.

"Foothold ahead." Chi Lian warned them, "Everyone be careful where you step."

The footholds she was talking about where covered with brown layers of soil.

"Such sharp teeth, one step and an entire foot is gone." Muyang commented. He could see through them with his x-ray vison.

Those were marked off as well, with red flags.

The deeper they moved into the forest, the more dangerous it became as they passed by dangerous animals like tigers, snakes, wild boars. One very large python in a cave had one of the triplets jumping up and squealing that he almost gave their position away.

He was not the only one to squeal in shock, even the old master who was watching with some of the family guards was frightened.

"What are they doing so close to that monstrous snake?" the old master asked worriedly.

The emperor’s people who were receiving the footage on their way over in their own submarine were shocked too, some more than others. Granted the forest was so dangerous place but the overly large snake was bound to elicit fear in the hearts of anyone that saw it.

The pile of human and animal skeletons in it’s lair did not give anyone confidence to face it in a confrontation because it told the story of how many had fallen prey to it.

The dark colored snake was sleeping but it’s huge coiled body could not be hidden.

"Sister-in-law, what are we doing in here?" he asked. His heart was beating wildly and he wanted to turn back.

"We have to go through it’s lair." Chi Lian told them. "The path ahead is impossible to go through because there is a man-made acid pond. I don’t think anyone is supposed to get past this point because it’s either you become snake chow or take an acid bath. Don’t worry, it can’t see or smell us right now so we are safe."

"We can’t leave it alive, what about the people coming after us, how will they pass through?" Muyang was looking keenly at the snake.

"It would be a pity to kill it, such a magnificent creature which has survived for we don’t know how long. We should take it to the zoo." Ringo even squatted down closer to the python to take a closer look.

"No thank you," the second brother of the triplets said. "All snakes are evil things, with those small beaded eyes and long forked tongue. We should just behead the damn thing and get it over with."

"We are wasting time." Chi Lian said, and she shot a couple of tranquilizers into the body of the python. "That should be able to ensure that it sleep for three days. We can’t kill it because the smell of blood might attract unnecessary attention, let’s move." She had a mission to finish and they had been on the move for three non-stop hours.

They went through the python’s layer quickly because the one who feared snakes the most was squeezing himself against Ringo unnecessarily even though the danger had been temporarily dealt with.

"But, how many people do you think have died inside that acid pond?" Ringo asked.

"Probably hundreds, maybe thousands." Muyang answered.

Every year more than two hundred missing cases were registered in the empire, others were not even reported. So, who knew how many had ended up here in circumstances of their own making or not.

They continued moving in silence but more freely because there were no more traps as they got closer to the farms. You could tell by the human gated fence that could be seen from a distance away with binoculars and the long stalks of ripe corn waiting to be harvested.

"We are almost there, right?" Muyang asked her.

"Mm." she nodded. "But, we have one more obstacle."

"What, another one? I thought we were done, why are they so paranoid? Do they think anyone is going to invade them?" the second of the triplets asked.

After walking for such a long distance, nobody had the energy to answer such a foolish question. Was he ignorant or simply foolish?

"You do know that it is exactly what we are doing, right?" Ringo turned around and asked him.

"Oh, right." he replied. "In that case, they were right to be paranoid." he said with a foolish smile on his face.

They came to the final obstacle that Chi Lian mentioned and stopped moving when she did.

She took something else from her pocket and put it down.

"What is it?" Ringo asked her.

She and Muyang were looking down at the ground intensely like they could see something that the rest of them did not see. Was it more footholds?

"Something similar to the gates of hell," Muyang answered.
