Chapter 608: The empire’s lost treasures
It was true that she asked Bear to find a replacement for her brother and the efficient manager had given a list of five possible candidates. Of the five, she had narrowed down her preferred candidate to one but she had not yet shared that choice with anyone.
"I guess now is a good time as any to tell you, however keep it on the low because we have not even approached this individual yet with an official offer. The offer will only be made after I share the name with Chi Wei and Bear."
"So, who is it? Please don’t give me a difficult boss, Chi Rui was so easy going and comfortable to talk to." Lili held her hands together, in a pleading gesture as if she was praying.
Rize tugged on Xue Lili’s ear and pulled it hard, "Do you mean that my husband is soft?"
"No, no." She replied as she hissed. "You, Rize, let go of me that actually hurts."
Chi Lian ignored the antics of her two friends and searched for her husband in the room. He was discussing something with his brothers privately at one of the tables.
As if drawn to each other in a mythical way, when she looked up and saw him, he looked and saw her as well. He smiled, and she waved at him.
"You two make me sick with jealousy." Xue Lili commented. "Somebody please break my husband out from that government lab. Two months he has been working on some project and I have only seen his face through the phone. By the way, princess, Rui is not your husband yet."
It seemed to Chi Lian that whenever they were together, Lili and Rize behaved like a cat and a dog that liked each other but also enjoyed scratching each other.
"Rui, how dare you call my husband by his name?"
Since the two had abandoned the previous topic for something trivial, she let it go as well. They would find out when an official announcement was made.
"Excuse me ladies, I must go and mingle with my other guests and get this little one a comfortable couch." She was the host after all, and her son had dozed off successfully after while she spoke to her two friends.
"Just put him in the car as long as someone is there to watch him, poor baby, he must have been woken up early for this. Where is Mei-Mei?" As someone with her own children, Lili understood.
Taking her advise, Chi Lian slipped away from the room and took an elevator downstairs to the car where she gently put her son down to sleep. Instead of going back up, she remained with him.
"You can go back spider, I know that you broke off your conversation with Bear to follow us. We are here and we are safe, also those three cars are filled with Muyang’s men. We are very safe, you and her have a lot to talk about."
He was her loyal guard who always kept an eye on her. If she took even one step, he automatically followed, ensuring to be ahead or behind her. This did not mean he could not have a life of his own.
"I would rather avoid the conversation." He responded. His countenance was very prickly, anything could set him off right now.
She could have chosen to back down but because she encouraged Bear to seek him out, she chose not to do it. "You can’t avoid things forever, Bear has taken great courage to seek you out so stop running and face her. I have been told that she has been waiting for you for many years. You alone have the power to give her what she has always dreamed of or free her so that she can open herself up to newer opportunities. What you are doing to her is selfish."
"Are you my therapist now?" He sulked.
"No, I am your boss who wishes to see you happy."
"Then don’t talk about it, talking about it makes me unhappy."
"No," she rejected his soft plea, "If both of you continue this way I am afraid that maybe, someday, I might have to let go of one of you. You are both equally important to me, one grows my assets and the other protects my life. I would not know who to let go of in the first place and I would feel very betrayed if you worked for someone other than me. So, have the conversation, it’s not just for your sake, but mine as well. Consider it another way of protecting me."
It also seemed like Bear was determined to talk to Spider today and when Chi Lian finished saying what was on her mind, Bear showed up. She knocked on Chi Lian’s car window and waved.
"Yes Bear."
"I hate to bother you boss but can I steal him for a moment?" She pointed at Spider.
Chi Lian gave Spider a stern and serious look, pushing him to decide. ’Make your choice right now," her eyes conveyed.
Grudgingly, spider got out of the car and slammed the door shut but Chi Lian hardly flinched. Some people needed a push to make the hard or best choices for their lives.
Little monk was disturbed by the slamming of the car door, he frowned and moved his body to the side slightly.
"Shh!" She hurried to pat his back and comfort him. "It’s okay baby, mummy is here, everything is okay." She sung one of the lullabies which usually put him to sleep fastest. Her baby boy settled down and the little frown on his face disappeared.
After his sleep deepened, she had T4 lock the car doors temporarily and she gave all her attention to the virtual screen. She still had a mission to finish and the days were slowly ticking away.
On the virtual screen was a map of the entire building, inside and outside. She also had a list of all its tenants old and new thanks to Bai Bao’s grandmother’s books. And most importantly, she knew who owned the building which would be helpful if she was to involve the police in emptying out the building.
She had considered pulling the old haunted building strategy out of her hat but in a building this large, it would take months for everyone to believe that the building was actually haunted. Criminals were not as gullible as most people.
If she unleashed rats on the building, they would simply call exterminators, one after the other and who was to say that in this old town, rats were not a common sight.
On the other hand, if she unleashed snakes on the residents, that could work. But with residents like loan sharks and organ traffickers, would they really give up this cushy accommodation because they were afraid of snakes, especially if they found out that the snakes were not poisonous.
At this point, she had settled on evicting them the legal way and she had given herself only seven days to accomplish this momentous task. If all the residents were in prison or on the run, that might be something the system considered satisfactory.
Moreover, it was more than likely that as the other residents watched their neighbors get arrested daily one after the other, they would feel the urge to move out. It would be tricky to accomplish but maybe there was a reason why the system wanted the building empty.
"Host, down here, look at your phone." T4’s voice came through her phone. He sounded like a system pet with something to say.
She looked at her phone and she was directed to a live press conference at the royal palace. The emperor was personally speaking, and her brother Chi Rui was standing to his left.
"I am very proud to say that with only a few day’s left to my daughter’s royal wedding, some of the empire’s lost treasures have been recovered from the sea and ready to be unveiled before you today."
