Chapter 585: Mysteries and more mysteries
This day just kept getting worse in her opinion, first the building now a continuation of that Qilin beast project. Why couldn’t dead things just stay dead?
"Small reminder, you were a dead thing too once." T4 being very unhelpful chimed in and reminded her.
Looking at Pd Xiaobo, she said," Hmm-mm," indicating that he continue.
Pd Xiaobo calmed down, and sighed before continuing on to say, "I was very disturbed when I received the envelope with the picture. In the beginning, I had no idea what was starting again or what it was related to. I contemplated bringing it to your attention but I did not want to come empty handed with a picture and a note that made no sense. So, I decided to track down the person who brought the envelope to me. There is a small camera which I keep above my door for protection and I checked the footage, and found this man."
He showed her a picture on his phone of a middle aged man in a hat.
"We used that facial recognition software which you gave us and tracked him down but you will never guess where we found him."
"A morgue_" she said.
Pd Xiaobo could not help looking at her as if she was a wizard. "How did you know?" He asked.
"I gave her the answer." T4 said in Chi Lian’s mind.
"I guessed." She said to Pd Xiaobo.
"Mmm," he nodded, " You are right, we found him in a morgue and we should have stopped there but curiosity got the better of our team. Was it a coincidence that the man who dropped off a mysterious envelope died only a few hours after dropping it off?"
"What was the cause of death?" She asked just to appear heavily invested in his version of the story.
T4 had already given her the cause of death.
"Suicide." The Pd said fervently, "He allegedly took his own life. But you see, there was no suicide note, his phone was missing and there is no next of kin. If we had not showed up when we did, the body would have been cremated or buried in one of those lots where they bury other unclaimed bodies after one year."
"So," she leaned forward, looking very vested in his story. "What did you do with the body?"
"I requested for an autopsy but the request was rejected because I had no police letter and I am not a relative. All I could do was pay some money to keep the body at the city morgue for a while until I find another option."
"I will take care of it, give me the name of the morgue, the coroner in charge and any other details pertaining to the body." She had access to someone high in the police, it would be a shame not to use this connection right now.
She held her hand out briefly, stopping him from saying anything else while she dialed a number on her phone.
One ring, two rings, three and a third, then the other party picked up.
"Hello brother," she said, "how are you?"
The person on the other end who was none other than Wang Bolin answered, "Great little cousin, I would be better if you shared with me some of those mangoes and pomegranates your husband keeps using to brag about his thoughtful wife online."
She chuckled at the antics of her husband and said, "I will send over a big basket in one hour."
"Thank you, is there something you need me to help you with?"
Not shying away from the request, she said, "Brother, can I trouble you for a police letter authoring an autopsy to be done by the Chinese forensic service, if possible I need golden Tao to do it personally."
"Whose autopsy?" He asked.
"A source of mine who apparently committed suicide, I just need to be sure that this is the case."
"Do you suspect foul play?" He asked.
She shook her head and replied, "I am not sure but something does not smell right. I need to know what happened in order to see how I can proceed."
"Are you in danger?" If she could see him right now, she would see a frown on his face.
"No, but my employee could be, you know how things go in this line of work. Some things are too sensitive or dangerous to be aired but we have to first ascertain what they are and turn every stone turn over before concluding."
"I will help you out but I will attach two of my trusted detectives to help you in case of foul play."
"En, thank you brother." She smiled. In short, if foul play was discovered, the police would be taking the case over and they would be blocked from it but she did not mind. What she needed right now was an autopsy done by an expert.
After hanging up she forwarded all the details of the dead man and where the body was at the moment.
"Okay," she put her phone down and looked at Pd Xiaobo, "What happened next?"
Calmly, Pd Xiaobo went on to narrate, "What we did next was use the facial identification software to track backwards looking for any traces of the man after leaving my apartment. Mind you, we do not know his name because he had no identification on his body at the time of death and according to the medical examiner his finger prints did not turn up in the system, up until now it’s another mystery." He raised his hands and shook his head. "We found no trace of him on any of the cameras, it was almost as if he appeared and vanished out of nowhere."
In Chi Lian’s mind, T4 said, "That’s because you were all looking in the wrong places, leave these things to the experts."
Looking down, Chi Lian rolled her eyes, the braggart strikes again, she thought.
"Let’s cut this short and just tell me if you found his identity." She told the Pd.
He had been in her office for over thirty minutes away and it was plain to see that this story would not end positively.
"We did not find him but we have the identities of the women in the picture. All of them have police files, they were orphans who went missing at the age of eighteen and all of them were from these specific orphanages. I would have thought nothing of it if not for the fact that we have more missing women who came from the same five orphanages and all were eighteen. The woman you asked us to look for too, Fu Hanzi, she and her brother briefly stayed at one of these orphanages too before the siblings run away. It’s the reason why I came to you boss, I think this is all connected somehow, see I think something weird is going on with all these missing women and call me paranoid but I keep thinking about the story of the old man who came to me with the wild tale of being kidnapped and forced to make babies. I am beginning to think that maybe he was not so crazy after all, this could be something like that." He looked at her eagerly, his eyes wide with the excitement. He had that look of a hunter that had found prey, one he was desperate to sink his teeth into. "Think about it boss, these girls went missing and they show up in a picture with babies in what looks like a mountainous area. What are the odds?"
