Chapter 523: A virtual pet shop actually sells virtual pets
"Do you want to take a tour of the house?" Tetris buzzed around Chi Lian. The virtual farm system was excited because this was the longest It’s owner had spent in the farm.
"Not now, I will see it tonight when I come for that sleep over."
"I will go and prepare a bedroom for you." Tetra disappeared as if she had never been there in the first place. Chi Lian was left behind to wonder if she really needed a bedroom since it was her consciousness which would be spending the night and not her physical body. But seeing as Tetra was gone and she could not ask her that question, Chi Lian walked away with the peach in her hands which she took a bite of immediately as she went in search of T4.
He was snoring now, and she guessed that the robot butler body too was sleeping. She gave up on her initial plan and evacuated the virtual world, she still had her peach in her hands and she smiled. So, she could take things out with her own hands, this was new!!!.
The virtual farm could now work as another storage space. "Thank you system." She said in her mind. Not to be lazy, she decided to read and research more about the rewards on her own.
"What is a virtual pet shop?" She tapped it and read a few instructions, trying to understand it with the best of her wisdom. "So, I can buy pets from here and sell them because they are not real but the housing is real, what does that mean?" It was more confusing than clarifying. "Let’s just buy one and test it," she was speaking aloud to herself. If anybody walked into her office right now they would assume that she was suffering a mental breakdown because she was looking into open space, swiping and tapping things while talking alone.
Chi Lian discovered that she could buy only three types of pets for now, fish in a tiny aquarium, a hamster with a running wheel and a red panda in a bamboo forest.
"The hamster could be cute." She thought, it was also the cheapest but she didn’t want to admit that it was her reason for picking it. It cost two hundred points and she paid for it immediately.
"Your purchase has been sent to your virtual storage, thank you for shopping with us."
It took her about five seconds to notice that while she purchased the hamster for two hundred points, two hundred five points had been deducted.
"System, where are my five points?" She asked.
"Five points have been deducted for packaging, transportation and delivery. Thank you for shopping with us." The system without T4 sounded mechanical but cheerful in an irritating way. It was also straightforward, no lengthy explanations or convincing tones. She actually preferred T4’s presence, he made the system more relatable.
Even if she argued with the system now, it would probably remain silent or repeat the same information as if it was on a loop. She decided not to do it and got the hamster from virtual storage space. The first thing she noticed was the so called packaging was a plain brown cardboard box. For a few seconds, her hands stopped moving and she just sat back and laughed. Between this mechanical system and T4 she could not figure out who the bigger thief was. She was expecting something exquisite, alien or simply sophisticated. This was none of those three, it was crude and simple.
Ignoring that, she opened the box with a box cutter and a silver circular wheel which was small enough that it could be placed on any table but big enough to stand out was inside.
She took the wheel out and sat it on the table. In the box was an instruction manual and a silver remote. The remote had no buttons but when she pressed her finger down on it, it turned itself on.
"Cool, better than the packaging." She said. Then she scrolled and saw a switch on wheel feature which she tapped and the wheel on the desk came alive, spinning with a hamster running. Chi Lian pushed her finger forward to touch the hamster and it just went through, there was no physical hamster. The virtual pet shop actually did sell virtual pets.
"Ah," she thought, "This is what it meant, the pet is virtual but the housing is real. The wheel was tangible but the running hamster, despite looking real was not. "Now I want to see the fish," she thought and with four hundred five points she bought a virtual fish aquarium. Same as the the hamster wheel packaging, the aquarium too was delivered in a card board box. It was medium in size and could fit on any table, the water within the glass aquarium was a beautiful deep blue and within it were colorful little fish swimming. When she put her hand in the aquarium, the water was real and clear but the fish were not.
"Huh!" She exclaimed, This is good for people who cannot take care of real pets since they needed no feeding, walking or care. The housing of the pet did come with a charging spot however, according to the manual, charging it once a week for one hour was enough. It could run on solar power or electricity. She decided to send the hamster wheel to Muyang’s office along with some grapes and peaches.
Next, she got the telescope from her virtual storage, thinking that it was a small hand held telescope. To her surprise, it was like one of those professional telescopes used in space companies or astrology departments of universities. Basically, it was gold, big, had a range of 10 billion light years away and was definitely over kill when it came to spying on people which is what a paparazzo did. On one hand she could sell it to the empire’s national space station which would make many scientists happy or give it to her son who loved the stars. On a scale of one hundred, her son had ninety nine percent of her votes in this case.
As for the smart cat, it was exactly what it was, a black smart cat which was probably a robot butler. Apparently it was excellent at getting in and out of places undetected, a paparazzo’s perfect pet.
"Bandit, please call old tiger to my office." She was using the smart companion device as her secretary and assistant.
"Footage from his office shows him teaching Fu Jui mathematics. Are you sure you want me to interfere? Whatever you want him to do, I am quite certain that there is an eighty percent chance you can accomplish on your own." The device responded.
Scarlet glared at it, her biggest grievance against this smart companion was that someone, probably her brother Chi Wei when he was seeking to make the device more likeable and less emotionless robot like had tampered with it’s code and made it ....annoying, mouthy, and too wise for its own good. When it went on the open market a few people would probably smash it to bits for being too opiniated and wanting to be the smartest thing in the room. She would have to tell her brother to minimize its access to cameras too, she didn’t want to see lawsuits related to invasion of privacy.
She picked up her phone and called him herself and when he came, she gave him a sealed cardboard box and asked him to deliver it Muyang.
