Chapter 516: Crowns everywhere

Morning came and the long awaited national liberation day was upon them. All those that had been invited for the celebrations at the palace went beautifully dressed. They attended the official banquet in their beautiful traditional hanfu’s and robes. A few wore more modern versions of the outfits, and some stubborn young men wore suits. It was not just in the palace but everywhere in the empire.

It was a public holiday, one that marked the beginning of the much needed and long awaited break from school. For many children, the moment this traditional wear was donned, the holiday fun was just beginning. So everywhere one turned, they could see teenage girls and boys, walking around in the malls in their traditional wear, chattering and giggling about their holiday plans.

The office workers were not excluded from this joyful carnival like environment. It was not everyday that one could walk around in this traditional wear without attracting eyes and curiosity. Even those that went to work on such a day wore traditional outfits and despite being at work, they wore smiles on their faces with the expectations of big red envelopes from their bosses. Among such workers were members of the press, medical workers, restaurant and hotel owners. In fact every entertainment or fun business was open because this one day was capable of bringing in earnings that would normally take a week to be made.

The Chi’s, the Jun’s and the Wang’s were among those that were invited to the palace. All the Chi’s and Jun’s went but the Wang’s were represented by the patriarch and matriarch only. Most aristocratic families which were large usually did this and chose two to three children or grandchildren to tag along.

The one thing that was different about the celebrations this year was the beautiful fashion in the form of vividly colorful robes and many heads with crowns of all types. Chi Lian had sent around free crowns from her virtual mall which were made with cheap rubies according to T4. All the families which were on good terms with them received two to three crowns. Some were floral, others had animal like designs or pictures of animals and a few were shaped uniquely.

The celebrations were to start at around eleven in the morning and as early as six o’clock she took a picture with a crown on her head and posted it. She even displayed floral crowns in addition to the others.

@Official Lady Chi: [Today’s fashion, we are all wearing crowns or flowers on our heads for the liberation day celebrations.]

Even she underestimated how much the title of ’Jun Muyang’s wife’ had on the influence of fashion among the women in aristocratic families. Phone calls were made, orders were placed, floral crowns were made quickly and by the time the ceremony started, eighty percent of the female attendees had crowns on their heads. Originally, Chi Lian had done this to be petty towards the crown princess but then she recalled the tradition of the English people on earth with their hats on formal occasions so some inspiration struck and in a moment, she decided to do something that even she was unaware of how much it would change a few things in the empire.

The liberation day festivities were always covered by all the televisions live in the empire. So everywhere one was, they got to watch this new crown trend with sparkling eyes, desiring crowns of their own. Soon, even flowers shops run out of flowers as people posted more pictures of themselves with floral crowns online.

At the royal palace, the aristocrats were sitting to one side and the foreign dignitaries to the other. All the seats at the front were reserved specifically for the immediate royal family.

The grand emperor and Queen dowager arrived first and the people stood up and bowed. The princes and princess arrived, again the people stood up and bowed. The crown prince and crown princess arrived and the whole process was repeated. Finally, a few gongs rung and the people stood up for the final time to welcome the emperor and the empress. When they sat down, the guests also took their seats.

Sitting on the second line on the side of the aristocrats, Chi Lian in her floral crown with a mixture of gold pins in a gold and black hanfu was very visible. No one knew if it was done deliberately but she was right in the line of sight of the crown princess and Muyang could see that the crown princess was seething.

Next to Chi Lian, Muyang chuckled and covered his face with a paper that contained the details of the itinerary for the day. He tilted his head close to her and said, "You have successfully pissed her off. If she could have your head on a spike right now, she would call for it."

Chi Lian replied, "I should have actually put a few crowns on the heads of my dogs and taken a picture. That would have driven her furious more than this."

He laughed again, amazed at the level of extreme pettiness his wife was revealing. He was not sure if he was mistaken but Muyang was certain that she was not as soft and considerate of others as she used to be in the beginning. Du Moxi’s actions and the events which followed had changed her in a way, they taught her a lesson that toughened her up. She had stopped caring and catering to the feelings of everyone. He doubted if she would ever bring home those she rescued out there like Jian Yu ever again.

They were asked to stand up for the singing of the empire’s anthem and everyone rose, placing their hands over their hearts. The song was slow, speaking about heroes, sacrifices and pride in their nation. It was the standard lyrics of the anthems of every empire and kingdom, basically praise your wise leaders, remind everyone of your past and promise a glorious future.

Still, many people stood still wherever they were and they observed the singing of the anthem with deep sentiments.

The cameras at the palace even caught a person or two that were wiping tears from their eyes, singing passionately.

After the singing of the anthem, the prime minister stepped forward and gave a welcoming speech and when he was finished, the grand emperor too came to give a speech.

"Is this whole thing speeches?" Chi Lian whispered to Muyang. She was among those who did not accept the paper with the itinerary.

"Sixty percent." He confirmed her fears. They had to sit through these speeches for two hours. If one was hungry, they could not eat a single thing as it was disrespectful to the emperor. They were however allowed to drink water which was distributed at the entrance of the palace. No one was allowed to enter the palace grounds with personal drinks and water.

Sitting next to Muyang was his brother Ringo and his wife Cherry. Cherry was playfully tugging at Ringo’s fingers and he was lightly slapping her hand away.

"There are cameras here, Behave yourself." He whispered to her.

The old madam saw this and she glared at them, commanding them to behave with her stern gaze.

"You will get me into trouble." He whispered to her.

The triplets were trying hard not to appear bored. Nobody really enjoyed the speeches but they were part of the ceremony. Even in many homes, malls or wherever those who were not at the palace were watching from, many chose to use this time to do other things like cooking or getting back to their shopping. When a group of dancers appeared at the front to entertain the guests before the emperor gave his speech, more than a few people were relieved.
