Chapter 503: Chi Rui in the palace.
Even though the plan was not to be intoxicated, a few of the women were tipsy by the time they left the bar. Chi Lian was sober but Cherry was not, she was one of the tipsy ones. So when Ringo grudgingly drove her home and tried to put her to bed, she kept jumping up and trying to escape, calling him a kidnapper. It was a long night for him which he spent with one eye open.
In the morning, true to what she said, Rize welcomed Chi Rui that came with many gifts to the palace to meet her parents.
"Are you ready?" she asked Chi Rui.
He shook his head, he was not ready at all, in fact, he would never feel ready to meet the emperor of the empire. One wrong move or word and he would end up in prison or probably executed, it was nerve wrecking.
"Don’t worry, he doesn’t bite." Rize giggled. "My father is all bark and no bite."
"Ha-ha," Chi Rui laughed nervously. They were standing outside the doors leading to the royal dining room, waiting to be invited in. The emperor was always the first in the dining room, others would be invited inside after he took his seat. This was done to ensure that nobody tampered with the emperor’s food.
"Come in now." the doors opened and the royal butler invited them inside.
Rize slipped her arm through Chi Rui’s arm and they walked inside. He wondered if she could tell that he was already sweating and his legs were wobbly. He knew all the rules to follow when one met the emperor but in his mind, he was afraid that he would fuck up. It was not even mess up to him but fuck up!!
"Smile." Rize whispered. "You look like you are heading to a guillotine for beheading rather than meeting your girlfriend’s parents."
Chi Rui opened his mouth, exposing his teeth in an attempt to put on what was a very fake smile. He noticed that the dining table was long, it could probably sit thirty people at the same time. This would be a good opportunity to sit as far from the emperor as possible he thought.
"Sit here." the butler showed him to a chair that was on the left hand side of the emperor.
"Oh, this can’t be good." he thought. He counted the assigned seats which had tableware in front of them, one, two, three, four, he counted with his eyes.
The empress was seated at the right hand side of the emperor which left him and Rize. She was going to sit next to her mother while he sat next to her father. Who was going to whisper to him what to do if she was not sitting opposite him?
"Boy, I do not bite, stop looking like a deer in headlights." the emperor said quite loudly to Chi Rui. "Why is your boyfriend afraid of me Rize? Did you paint a negative picture of us to him?"
"Daddy," Rize said childishly, "Anyone would be nervous to meet you, my Rui is not any different. If he came in with a proud and arrogant look on his face you would be displeased. Calling him boy is not making it any better, my Rui is a man."
"Hmm." the emperor mumbled.
The chair was pulled out for Chi Rui by a male servant and the meal was served in silence. He would not call it comfortable silence because he mostly nibbled on his food like a model watching their weight. How could he eat when he was fighting the urge to hurl his insides out?
"Is our food not to your liking?’ the emperor asked him.
Chi Rui shook his head desperately, "No your majesty the food is very tasty."
"And yet you have barely touched it." the emperor retorted.
"I had a few sweet honey buns and coffee early in the morning, I am still a bit stuffed." he said, and then he laughed dryly.
"Did the sweet honey buns come from your sister?" the emperor asked nonchalantly.
"Yes your majesty." Chi Rui nodded.
"She has not sent any buns or honey to the palace, does she think I am allergic to both those things?" he looked Chi Rui in the eye and Chi Rui swallowed nervously. He was not his sister’s store keeper. What she had or did not have was none of his business until she chose to share it.
"That’s not true," Rize said "I brought ten whole packets of sweet honey buns, each packet had six buns. I also brought two big bear shaped bottles of honey that Chi-Chi gave me. They should be in the royal kitchen."
The emperor looked at the royal butler. "I will go and find out from the kitchen your majesty." the royal butler stepped out.
"Tell me Chi Rui," the emperor put his hand on Chi Rui’s back, "What are your plans for my daughter?"
"I intend to marry her your majesty." Chi Rui said loudly with his chest pushed forward as if he was a soldier speaking to a superior in the army.
"And why should I allow that happen?" the emperor asked a question that surprised all the people at the table. They all knew that the emperor was supportive of this union so why?
"Uhm, I love her." Chi Rui declared unsurely.
"You don’t sound so sure of your answer." the emperor said, looking around he asked his guards "Does he sound sure?"
"No, he does not." they answered altogether.
"See, even they don’t believe you Chi Rui. You see I have only one daughter and she is the apple of my eye. I love my princess so much that I terrorized almost every boy she dated until she gave up on dating altogether. Those boys were wrong for her and I worried about the kind of damage they would do to my little princess’s heart. Many men have tried to woo her over the years and it was usually for the wrong reasons, they wanted a connection with royalty and wealth that would change their lives forever. What do you expect from your eventual marriage to my daughter?"
Chi Rui shook his head, "Nothing your majesty."
"Nothing," the emperor looked displeased, "You expect nothing from your marriage with my daughter. What kind of man expects nothing from his marriage?"
Chi Rui was beyond nervous, the ability of the emperor to corner one like a trapped animal with no way out was really superb. What was he supposed to say? He was not here for the wealth or connections, he was simply in love with the princess.
"What do you want from me your majesty?" he asked.
"The truth Chi Rui, what are your expectations should this relationship blossom into a marriage?"
