Chapter 486: I can be your mother too

Apart from the contents of the vault, the old madam narrated everything about their journey from start to finish to her husband. Chi Lian sat in the living room watching in fascination at the behavior of the two elderly people. At this point she was quite sure that the old madam would secretly tell her husband about the vault contents when they were alone in their room. At thr end the conversation she said, "The emperor gave Chi-Chi a recipe for almond jelly cookies, and that’s everything that happened."

All the old master had said was , "This is a beautiful clock." and the old madam opened up like a flower. She was like a child reporting the events of her day to her parent, Chi-Chi used to think that she was the only one that did that with Muyang, how wrong she was.

"It sounds like you all went on an adventure without me, why wasn’t I invited?" the old master indulgently looked at his wife and held her hand.

"Bah!! you decided to go running to the cold town without telling me, what were doing over there?"

He smiled and hissed softly, "Sorry for not telling you in advance my dear, my friends went to take a look so I went with them, the projects are coming along quite nicely. In two months it’s possible for Chi-Chi’s entire building to be ready."

"Thank you for checking on my building grandpa, you can go and supervise them on my behalf as many times as you want." Chi Lian said from the side. "Grandpa. I want to speak to you about something."

The old madam bent her body a bit low because her husband was blocking her view of Chi Lian "Are you going to tell him about Rose?" she asked curiously.

"Yes grandmother, it’s not something that can wait." Chi Lian nodded. It would be easy on herself and Rose to adapt if her living arrangements were handled as soon as possible. She had already been moved from her home, family and country. She also knew that Chi Lian was now guardian, if she packed her up and sent her elsewhere later on the girl would be hurt emotionally.

Chi Lian went on to tell the old master the similar story story she told the old madam about her unnamed friend and guardianship.

"If you gave your friend your word then she can stay, I believe that it’s important to honor our promises. A man that cannot keep a promise cannot be trusted." the old master responded at the end of it all. And he had no idea how right he was with what he said about honoring promises. Wusi was the perfect example of a dishonorable man for he had not kept his promise and he could not be trusted.

"Bring the girl, I want to meet her." the old master said.

Chi Lian sent a maid to call Rose and the girl was brought to the living room. She was shy, awkward and timid before the old master. Despite Chi Lian telling her many times to keep always keep her head up, she was facing down, her eyes looking at the floor.

Chi Lian pulled the girl in front of the old master gently, "We have talked about this Rose, always look forward and do not be frightened. If you are easily intimidated many people will take advantage of you."

"Is she scared?" the old master asked Chi Lian.

"She is nervous and still sad about having to leave her home." Chi Lian answered. "She will become bolder and more comfortable with time."

The old master guessed that maybe the girl’s parents were dead since Chi Lian said her mother had to go far away without mentioning a country. He felt pity for the girl, being an orphan at this age was going to be hard on her. "Since she is going to live here we should hire a teacher to start teaching her our language, a private tutor will also be good before you send her to school."

Chi Lian let go of Rose, joined her hands together and rubbed them, "Thank you so much grandpa, you are the best."

"I accepted her first." the old madam mumbled. Why was the old man getting all the praise?

"Yes grandmother, you are the best of them all." She looked at Rose and told her, "You can call them grandmother and grandfather from now on, we are all family, okay?"

"Yes." replied softly.

"Grandma, I am going to help her wash her hair and trim it a bit." Chi Lian excused herself and left with Rose.

Watching them leave, the old master shook his head, "That poor girl," he said, "She has no one now."

"Didn’t you say that she can stay?" his wife asked, "Chi-Chi told her to call us grandma and grandpa, we qualify to be her parents. Although, I wonder why the girl is called Rose Chi, was Chi-Chi’s friend also called Chi?"

"Should we do a DNA test secretly between Chi-Chi and the girl?" the old master whispered.

"For what?" his wife looked at him extremely perplexed, "If you think that the girl is Chi-Chi’s daughter then you are crazy. How old would she have been when she gave birth to her?"

The old master was surprised by his wife’s words, "Dear, that is not what I meant. I am not crazy, I just thought that maybe she is the daughter of one of her two older brothers."

"Really!!," the old madam slapped her husband’s thigh, "Could it be?"

"I don’t know, and calm down, we might be wrong after all the girl has none of our ethnic features whatsoever. "

"Maybe it’s the second brother, the one that is dating the princess, he would be the one with a reason to hide a child. Having a love child will not be acceptable to the royal family. The emperor is personally pushing for that marriage and nothing is going to get in the way, if he finds out about the girl!!" she gasped. The old madam not only wrote a novel but she was shooting, directing and turning it into a movie.

"Dear, you really need to calm down before you give yourself a heart attack, I was just saying random things. Chi-Chi’s brother’s are responsible men, even if one of them had a child they would not abandon it. Don’t go repeating these things that you are thinking outside the house. And don’t run any DNA tests, we have to take Chi-Chi at her word."

"Do you take me to be a gossip?" his wife glared at him and she stood up with a sulking look on her face.

"Dear," he called after her. "Wait for me." he followed her.

If Chi Lian had seen these two acting like a pair of teenagers she would have laughed so much, but she did not because she was in a bathroom dyeing Rose’s hair from blonde to brown.

"It’s only temporary for now." She explained to her when she saw the tears in the girl’s eyes again. "The less you look like your mother the safer you will be. Keep reminding yourself that everything she has done has been for your safety and she sent you away to protect you. You are not without a mother, if you need one, I will be happy to step in and fill her role. If you ever want to, don’t call me auntie, just call me mother. By the way you are going to have freedom now unlike the way things were in America but you must always remember to be careful.

If anybody asks you about your past, we have practiced what you say to them. Don’t add or remove anything from the story, memorize it until it gets stuck in your head as if it is truly your story. Our family too by the way, don’t divulge anything to strangers or friends about us casually. I will assign a bodyguard and personal maid to take care of your needs just like I do for all my children. When you start school, pay attention and learn everything you can. You have to be successful and make sure that you and your mother’s sacrifices have not been for nothing. You are a brave girl Rose, I am so proud of you." She advised Rose and consoled her in every way possible.

"You should also lose some weight and learn martial arts, you must learn to protect yourself just in case of anything."

Rose nodded.
