Chapter 465: The starlight ball
It was as if Allie Jean shrunk even more when Chi Lian tried to convince her to sing again.
"My body can never be healed, I have been to every doctor of good repute in almost every country in the world. There is no hope for me, I am too broken to sing again." Allie Jean said in a small voice. "I have the pictures of the people that died that night. I look at them almost everyday and I see their faces when I go to sleep at night. I feel so guilty for their deaths."
"Why, because it was your concert?" Chi Lian asked her.
"Yes." Allie Jean answered.
"I read online once that the fire was a started by cigarettes someone dropped in flammable alcohol close to the stage. It’s not your fault that a fan smoked at the concert and started a fire accidentally. It’s not your fault that people panicked and a stampede ensued which resulted in the death of those ten people. You have spent years feeling guilty and bound by things that were out of your control. It’s time you forgive yourself and find some joy, the best gift you can give those fans is to sing a song for them. Let the people know that you remember them and you grieve with them. I can heal you, I have people that can restore your body within one year but you need to sing again. Give your fans and yourself a reason to come back to life. The papers with the lyrics of the song are outside, pick one, learn the lyrics, you already know the melody. If you decide to fight for yourself then come and sing. I will leave out the clothes and mask for you to use."
Chi Lian had said all she could and also offered to help. But help could not be forcefully given, the receiver of help had to accept it. "You can see yourself out Miss Allie Jean, we do not have anything to discuss until you make your choice. Like I stated earlier, I have no intentions to sell the song.I can still offer you treatment for the burn marks and your arm even if you don’t sing but you will have to wait for a few months."
Allie Jean turned around to leave, since Chi Lian could not see her face she did not know if she was angered or aggrieved.
"I will be back to try again." she surprised Chi Lian by saying.
"I will be leaving tomorrow Miss Allie Jean, I will not be here when you return." Chi Lian replied.
Allie Jean walked away with her back hunched, she seemed to be more exhausted than she was when she walked in.
"Is everything okay ma’am?" Butler Davies came and asked her after Allie was gone. "Did she bother you? If she did then I can put her down on the list of people never to be granted entry into the house."
"It’s okay Davies, I leave tomorrow after all so whether she returns or not is not a big deal. She is harmless as far as I can tell. Do you know who she is?"
"Yes ma’am we know all of the residents within a mile radius of the house. But aside from her name and past we don’t know anything else about her. Even her identity has been unclear until she showed up and we confirmed it."
"Call my friend back and tell the maids to bring in the food. I want to eat and relax before preparing for the ball."
"Two security guards will be going with you to the ball, It’s your husband’s order."
"Alright." She nodded.
Evening came and Chi Lian that was dressed beautifully in a red gown with a bow at the waist which emphasized her lovely figure was driven to the Palace by the bodyguards in a Rolls-Royce. She arrived with many others that were just as beautifully dressed, draped in luxurious clothes, expensive jewelries and pride on their faces.
At a certain point after they crossed the gate, the occupants of the cars would step out and walk to the main doors of the castle were they went through security checks before being allowed inside.
Chi Lian stepped out of the car when it was her turn and she stared in wonder at the beautiful architectural masterpiece which people had named ’the glamour palace.’ It had been built in the year eighteen sixty six by the emperor who was enamored by an actress. It’s walls were resplendent in marble and gold leaf, the tall towers at every corner were adorned with beautiful stonework. Above the main door was a carved statue of a gargoyle, a creature of myth. It was the animal symbol of this royal family just as the dragon was to her empire.
She imagined what the inside would be like as she approached the security checkpoint. What kind of grandeur awaited her eyes on the inside of this ancient castle whose beginnings were embroiled in scandal?
"Please provide your invitation." the royal guard at the checkpoint told her.
The other people she noticed had physical invitations while she did not. Hers was on the phone but it had managed to grant her entrance at the first gates so she confidently showed it to the royal guard.
The royal guard looked at her, scanned the invite on her phone and then he stepped away and said something into his earpiece.
"Ma’am, please step aside." he said to her when he returned.
As she stepped aside instead of heading into the palace a few eyes turned toward her. Curiously those eyes observed her and made judgements, most of those judgements were negative.
"She must not have an invitation." someone whispered.
"There is always more than one person like this every year." another said.
She deduced that in their minds she was probably here to fluke inside the ball. But they were wrong because T4 had confirmed this invitation personally, so why was she pulled aside?
Was this what bear meant when she said that if she was not careful and this was a hoax she would end up with egg all over her face? Just this act of standing to the side like this while others sneered at her and judged her was very humiliating.
"T4 are we missing something?" Perhaps now was the time to turn back and walk away before the press that was recording the event and taking pictures of attendees decided to photograph her and ridicule on their funny segments.
