Chapter 458: Crowns, robes and tea.

In the royal palace of the Chinese empire, the Queen dowager was spending time with the empress, Princess Rize and Crown Princess inside of a very large parlor. The women were trying on robes for the liberation day festival which was to take place on the third day of the following month. For each woman over a dozen options had been provided and they were giving one another opinions on what they considered elegant and appropriate.

As they tried on the intricately hand woven robes, they discussed affairs of the empire and ordinary gossip.

"Grandmother you have barely tried on anything from your pile. Are you not in the mood or do you plan to avoid liberation day this year?" Rize asked her.

"I am waiting for Chi-Chi to return so that she can design the perfect gown for me. Look at the crown she gifted me with for the ceremony, the sapphires are devastatingly beautiful but the colors do not match any of these robes." The queen dowager showed off the crown which she had carried along in a silver case that was locked up tight and could only opened with her finger print.

The crown of silver was eye catching with the way it glittered, the little dragons that were coiled around each other and the purple sapphires which also appeared to be emerald green depending on the angle one looked at the crown from.

"That is one beautiful crown, wow!" Rize tried to touch it but the Queen dowager snatched it away and locked it in the case again.

"Grandmother!" Rize was shocked and unhappy, "Do you not trust me with your crown?"

"No." The queen dowager answered, " You are ten seconds away from pleading, whining or trying to emotionally blackmail me into handing you the crown and it’s not happening. Chi-Chi is your sister-in-law to be, your boss and friend. If you want something from her request politely and she will give it to you. How is your relationship with the second son of the Chi family fairing by the way? I saw online that the older brother and his girlfriend parted ways. Make sure that your relationship is as steady as rock, do not allow any of those females in the entertainment industry to steal your man. I don’t know why he has not yet proposed to you, maybe your father should have a talk with him." The queen dowager was extremely uncomfortable with the homeostatic state of Rize’s relationship.

Rize appeared to be completely nonchalant on the other hand. "Grandmother, he assured me on the day of Chi-Chi’s engagement that we would be engaged soon. I know that he will propose and his family treats me as the daughter-in-law already. Mama Chi does not call me Princess anymore she calls me Rui’s girlfriend, dear, daughter or daughter-in-law which shows that we have become closer."

"That’s wonderful your father is hoping to tie the two families together as soon as possible. A few ministers came by recently to discuss something with him regarding a scientific paper that she sold to him through minister Su. Your father has not stopped smiling since then, he says we have a big chance at competing on a global scale for number one empire now. He said you marrying into the Chi family is better than marrying into a royal family of another empire and he urged me to remind you to speed things up, at this point I think he wants me to dress you in red robes and drop you off at the front door of the Chi’s house." The empress joined in to give her daughter her own opinion on the importance of becoming close to the Chi family, Chi Lian in particular.

The queen dowager and Rize laughed. "It’s a great thing that I love Chi Rui in this case otherwise father and I would be at loggerheads if I had no interest in him." Rize replied.

"As long as you are happy your grandmother and I will support you." The empress assured her daughter. "When you are requesting for a crown put in a request for me as well."

"Sure I will, but Chi-Chi is not in the country right now, we might have to wait until she comes back."

"I am okay with waiting." the empress said, she then looked at her personal maid and called her over. "Miran send all these robes back we will pick robes later."

"Yes your highness." the Miran opened the door and the robes were put back on racks and wheeled out. The women stayed in the parlor though, drinking tea from yellow and blue flasks with a Juan tea label.

"Aah," the empress said happily, "This melon tea is simply heavenly." she commented.

"It’s expensive." Rize commented.

"It’s from the VIP list and only five cups are sold a day. I must commend her on the wise marketing strategy. A five thousand Yuan cup of tea, it’s almost as expensive as a cup of Da Hong Pao." The empress shook her head, conveying her wonder.

Of the four women in the room one was not saying a word , the crown princess. She had this annoyed look on her face which she was trying to hide but the queen dowager managed to catch her brief sneer. Just as the queen dowager was about to say something the crown princess smiled graciously and opened her mouth.

"Your highness, Da Hong Pao is valuable and rare tea, only six of the mother trees are left in existence. Surely comparing it to whatever this is in these cups is..."

The empress frowned, laughed dryly and asked the crown princess "Are you trying to rub it in my face that your family owns five of the trees and supplies our royal palace with just a little bit of the tea leaves every year."

The crown princess bowed and her eyes widened, "No your highness, I was just briefly confused because you compared precious tea leaves to ordinary tea." Her head was bowed but in her eyes was contempt for the empress.

"How do you know if it’s ordinary?" the empress asked the crown princess. "You have not touched your cup probably because you look down it’s source. You think your Yan family is extremely noble and of a high class, don’t you? Do you look down on us too because we are drinking this tea?" the empress was angry and her voice was becoming louder.

"Mother, it’s okay." Princess Rize held the empress’s hand. "Sister-in-law has a habit of letting her tongue run ahead of her brain. But I am sure that she will do better next time."

While comforting the empress, Rize had advertently called the crown princess brainless and stupid. She had never liked this crown princess who always used her family’s wealth to act as if she was the best of all nobles.

"Miran." the empress called her personal maid.

"Yes your highness."

"From now on I do not not want a single trace of the Yan family’s Da Hong Pao in the royal kitchen. Tell the chefs to cook it all and distribute it in the homeless shelters. Next time I go out for any event make sure that the reporters get a clear picture of me holding a cup of Juan tea."
