Chapter 354: The lotus blessing
The auction house was quite full when they arrived, Ringo had been right about them being fashionably late.
She heard the whispers when she walked in holding Muyang’s hand with that pink diamond ring on her finger glistening brightly. Nobody could resist taking a look at her hand once they realized who she was.
Even today, the ring was still the talk of the city on and offline. She noticed some jealous looks, some envious looks and some angry looks but she paid them no mind.
Instead she tightened her hold on Muyang’s hand and smiled proudly.
One of the auction house workers led them to a private room where an attendant was waiting to cater to them and also place their bids.
"This auction takes place once every five years, what do they do with the place for the remainder of the time?"
"It’s a show room for painters and exhibitors. The Hua auction may take place once every five years but other auctions are held monthly and yearly.
If somebody discovered buried treasure that is worth something and they want to get maximum value for it, an auction is usually the best option." Muyang explained to her.
"Not an antique shop?"
"It depends but most antique shops sell fake products so the odds of them paying handsomely are low. That’s why I said you should bring your coins to an auction house or lend them to a private gallery. You have genuine Ming dynasty coins sitting in an antique shop with a bunch or fake antiques. Who will possibly ever imagine that they are genuine?"
"The lucky one." She replied in a very unbothered voice.
"You have genuine Ming dynasty coins, really?" the attendant in the room who had been silent all this time interrupted their conversation in an excited voice. "We can handle them for you valued client."
"No thanks." Chi Lian rejected her offer.
The attendant looked at Muyang but he just shrugged. They were not his coins, what was she expecting him to do about it?
The rest of the family came to the private room slowly and occupied their seats.
"We were greeting others first, so many people have been asking about the two of you." the old madam told Chi-Chi.
"We came up directly." she answered.
The attendant coughed in that way that meant ’may I please have your attention’ and all eyes turned to her. "Esteemed guests, as always in order to satisfy your needs best the Danzi proprietor wants to know if you are you here for anything particular or just looking around?"
"We are just looking." grandma An responded and the old madam concurred.
Mama Chi did not respond while papa Chi looked completely uncomfortable and out of place.
Ringo and the two grandfathers were completely inattentive.
Just when the attendant was about go back to her corner, Muyang said, "We are here for the lotus blessing."
"The lotus blessing." the attendant repeated after Muyang.
"Yes, the lotus blessing." he repeated himself.
The attendant looked at her phone and said, "the lotus blessing is number six. The starting bid is three million and it can be increased by no less than twenty thousand."
"Understood." Muyang said.
The attendant stepped away to give them privacy.
"Why do you want the lotus blessing Muyang?" old madam Jun asked her grand son curiously. "Is it because of the myth surrounding the origin of the lotus?"
"What myth?" Mama Chi asked curiously.
The old madam was the kind of person who loved telling mythical stories and the minute someone showed interest in her stories, she was happy to narrate.
"Apparently, a long time ago in the Gao dynasty, the country was facing a serious famine. There was no water and people were dying of hunger everyday.
Prayers, rituals and sacrifices were made to the gods to bless the land by sending rain but they all went unanswered.
One day, on his thirtieth trip from the temple, an old monk told the emperor to climb the highest mountain in the kingdom and return with a lotus plant.
When the emperor told his court about what he had been told to do, they opposed it immediately because of the dangers involved. A few guards tried to convince the emperor to let them take on the task but he refused.
He climbed the mountain on his own, suffering for many days and night. He was wounded and bled from his feet but he kept going and he returned with a lotus plant. He took it to the temple and the monk offered it to Buddha.
That night, the heavens opened and rain fell on the land. It is said that the lotus never withered but grew to produce lotus seeds which the emperor planted in a pond in the palace.
He commissioned a talented young painter to paint the mother lotus. He hung the painting in the palace and he named it the lotus blessing."
"So there is such an interesting story?" Mama Chi asked in wonder.
Old madam Jun finished her story and leaned back in her seat. "It’s an amazing story."
If she could look around the room, she would notice that nobody else apart from mama Chi was believing her story.
"It’s fiction." Chi Lian chimed in. "How can one lotus plant survive in a time of drought?"
"It was a miraculous lotus." old madam retorted. She seemed to actually believe the story.
Chi Lian wanted to argue some more and describe vividly all the ways in which this story was fictional but Muyang pressed her hand and slowly nodded his head so she changed her words.
"In that case, since grandmother believes so much that such a blessed lotus existed, we should take the painting home and when Muyang and I build our own house, we can hung the painting up for blessings."
"That is a good idea," old madam Jun said cheerfully, "Spend as much as you want, I fully support you. If you don’t have enough money, use your grandfather’s card."
"Grandmother, Muyang has more money than grandfather." Ringo butted into the conversation to say something everybody in their family knew.
Most people assumed that Muyang was called the devil because of his mind games and precise analysis skills but the truth was that he got the name because he made ten billion dollars from trading stocks at the age of eighteen in a way none of them understood.
It was as if he could see the future and know which stocks would rise or fall. He single handedly disrupted the stock market of different empires hence the name, ’the devil.’ And ever since then, his wealth had continued to multiply rapidly.
"The auction is starting, stop talking." Muyang was quick to shut Ringo up.
