Chapter 346: A painting
Zhangye’s bandages were quickly removed and his new face was revealed. Most of it was still red and swollen but he was healing quite nicely and he looked like an entirely different man.
She was satisfied with the work doctor He had done. It was too bad that the woman was greedy and untrustworthy otherwise she would have loved to keep her on retainer.
"Do you want to see what you look like?" she asked him.
Zhangye was staring at her with uncertainty and that same old unwelcoming hostility she saw when she first met him.
"Who are you?" he asked her tentatively.
Seeing a strange woman and two muscled men in this room was bringing out his fighting instincts, this was especially because the man in black looked exuded danger so easily. Zhangye had met men like this before, in prison and in the army.
No man developed such a killer aura without having blood on their hands. Why was such a person here? Had the plan gone wrong?
"Oh," Chi Lian tilted her head to the left and then upright and she nodded. "I understand the hostility now, it’s because we have not met before."
"Who are you?" Zhangye asked again.
She reached into her bag and Zhangye jumped out of his wheel chair and assumed a fighting stance.
Old tiger and spider did the same. "Step back young miss." Old tiger said.
If she did not resolve this quickly, they were going to break into a fight.
"Relax Zhangye; I just want to show you a business card." She took the lawyer’s card out of her bag and handed it to him.
Zhangye snatched the card from her hand and quickly perused it. "Where is she?" he asked.
"She is on another job." Chi Lian answered with a smile. "You didn’t think that one person could be behind the entire operation, did you? A one army cannot destroy the enemy we have in common, that’s a foolish assumption.
Right now, every television channel in the empire has reported the news of your death. Your body, with your DNA was found completely burnt and fragmented at the crime scene. You have a new face, new identity and money. Nobody in the world knows who you are. It took a well coordinated operation to pull that off.
Don’t worry, we are not the bad guys here, we are the good ones and we have fulfilled our end of the bargain so it’s your turn. Where is the video recording that you hid?"
"I want to speak to her first." Zhangye responded.
"I sent her to you, she works for me and if you ever want to meet her again, maybe you should consider working for me as well. But seeing as to how we are strangers and you are not part of us, it’s best for you to know only up to this point."
"Boss, let’s just squeeze the answer out of him by force. You went through so much to get him here but he wants to go back on his word." Old tiger was already frustrated with this Zhangye character. He had also seen the news of the prisoner Zhangye who died in a car explosion but he had no idea that the boss was involved.
No wonder she had been running herself rugged these days, she had taken on such a big job alone. But this Zhangye was not grateful and he kept questioning the boss.
"No old tiger, that will not be necessary, we had a deal with Zhangye. I believe he is a man of his word or am I wrong?"
Zhangye scoffed and said, "At least show me proof that you know her apart from presenting the business card. You could have picked this up from anywhere or forged your own."
Zhangye was proving to be stubborn but he was showing traits of loyalty and caution. If he had just handed over the evidence he had because of who she claimed to be, her interest in recruiting him would wane.
She wanted him to protect little monk because he was skilled, ruthless when he wanted to be and a quick thinker.
He came up with a way to protect himself from his enemies by going to prison and in prison he made sure that he was always in solitary confinement. T4 had dug up all the files on the attempts on his life in prison and it couldn’t be doubted that he was skilled. The man defeated everyone that was sent! He broke bones, arms, ribs; basically any part of his enemy that he got ahold of was crushed.
He was similar to grandpa Wang’s bodyguard Caizu, that’s why she wanted him for little monk.
In anticipation of such a scenario, T4 had faked pictures of her and herself in disguise and she showed them to Zhangye.
"You believe me now, right?" she asked him.
"Only partially, but I will do as promised. "
She smiled victoriously and the men pulled back their fighting stances.
"Do you need me to take you to it?" she asked Zhangye.
He shook his head, "Like you said, I don’t work for you so I should know where to stop. You can go and retrieve it yourself. The reason why I appealed my sentence at around this time was not because I was scared, it’s because the Hua auction takes place at around this time every five years. "
"The Hua auction?" she stated it as a question.
"It’s an auction held by the Danzhi gallery and auction house every five years where they auction off nothing but floral paintings, jewelry, porcelain and the like. They do not auction off ordinary floral items of course, they only auction off ancient items, royal items or items by craftsmen that have been deemed worthy and are highly sought after."
"So you hid the recording in one of those items." Old tiger assumed.
Zhangye replied, "Yes, I knew that my place would be searched and after what I had seen I had no idea who to trust. The proprietor of Danzhi auction house had come to see me four times before asking for an ancient painting that my grandfather left behind. He knew about it because they had been friends for years. Anyway, when I found out that my life was in danger, I placed the memory card in the frame of the painting and gave it to the proprietor on loan to display in their gallery for twenty years, I knew stealing explosives would get me twenty to twenty five years in prison. After twenty years, I could either retrieve my painting or allow it to be auctioned off. The twenty year limit is coming up and I heard from an old friend who I asked to keep an eye on the painting that without my say so, my painting is being put up for auction, so much for trust, right? "
Zhangye looked betrayed and angry; no wonder he trusted no one. Even his grandfather’s old friend that he trusted had betrayed him. She felt sorry for him, for what he had lost in the past years because of the greed of a few people.
Bringing them down was the only way to give him and those they harmed justice.
"What’s the name of the painting?" she asked him.
