Chapter 315: Betrayal in the family
The atmosphere was quite suffocating and more than one person looked ready to hurl.
Old master Wang unfolded the piece of paper in his hands and looked around slowly at the members of the family that were gathered.
"Do you know what I am holding in my hands right now?"
Some people replied no, others shook their heads while most just looked on in confusion. One of them, Wang Tong thought to herself, ’we are not wizards, how are supposed to know what is written on a piece of paper we have never seen before?’
Old master Wang handed the paper to Bolin who folded it and held it tightly in his hands despite his mother looking at him with curious eyes.
"Each one of you here knows the values of our family." Old Wang said. "I would ask you to recite them but now is not the time. Right now, we are gathered here because a member of this family broke our most sacred code."
"Huh!" a gasp was heard in the room. The gasp was not the only reaction though, most were silent but the disbelief was shared.
The most sacred code of the family was never to betray each other and always protect one another. It was passed down from generation to generation which is why the Wang family was more united than most. No matter how many personal scrabbles they had, they never harmed each other and if one was in danger, all arose to defend that one individual.
It was their thing, all for one and one for all.
The punishment for betrayal in the family was expulsion from the clan. Who was crazy enough to break the sacred family code?
Heads twisted and turned in the room as they all looked at each other, trying to figure out who had made that foolish mistake.
"Wang Jie, step forward." old master Wang ordered.
Wang Zhaochen wasted no time in giving his sister Wang Tao a knowing look. She smirked in return, as if they had known all along that their aunt was the reason for this gathering being called.
Wang Jie, who was old master Wang’s youngest sister stood up and came forward with a sulky look on her face. She was sixty three years old, being called out like this in front of the young ones who were supposed to respect her made her feel humiliated.
It wasn’t enough that she received a few curious stares as they contemplated whether she was wearing a wig or not now she had to endure more accusing looks.
"Older brother, I don’t believe that I have not done anything that warrants being called out like this in front of the young ones. I am your sister, if you want to talk to me we can talk privately in your study." She said arrogantly.
Old master Tao sneered and replied, "A family meeting is held for the sake of the entire family. Has marrying into the Chu family made you forget your roots?"
Her husband Chu Hong who had accompanied her froze when his family was mentioned.
It was a well-known fact that the Wang family looked down on the Chu’s and to them he was an unwanted entity in this family.
"Why are you bringing up my husband’s family elder brother?" Wang Jie asked unhappily. "If you invited us to humiliate us then we would rather leave."
"When you insisted on marrying into the Chu family father and I refused to agree because that family is like a den of thieves. They can kill each other for money and inheritance, that’s how the former patriarch your husband’s father got his position after all. He killed his brother and stole his position." Old master Wang retorted.
"Brother!" Wang Jie called unhappily.
"But you threatened to kill yourself and father relented because he loved you. I guess your husband passed his rotten ways to you and you decided to bring them into our Wang family. If our father could see you now, he would kill you with his bare hands." Old master Wang continued. "Wang Jie can you explain to me how my wife got into an accident that almost took her life many years ago?"
More gasps of shock went around the room. This time around, they were accompanied by murmurs. Everyone knew about the accident but they all thought it was random. Was Wang Jie involved in it?
"What are you talking about? I didn’t do anything to harm sister-in-law." Wang Jie hurried to deny.
"Did I say that you harmed her? I asked you to explain how the accident happened. Wang Jie, you are giving yourself away too easily."
"Brother-in-law..." Chu Hong interfered.
"Shut up." Old master Wang barked at him. His voice was so loud and strong that a few of the younger ones could not help but feel afraid.
Old master Wang looked at his sister and said in a cold tone, "Wang Jie, you and my wife were pregnant at around the same time back then. Coincidentally our father had just been rewarded shares by the emperor in the Buxiang market for his meritorious deed. He said he would give the shares to whichever child was born first. Five months in and unexpectedly your child died in the womb. You were depressed for months and refused to return home.
But when Nuo was about to give birth, you suddenly showed up and insisted on going to B city with her to see the sunflower fields. You said looking at beautiful things would make the baby girl she was carrying beautiful. Initially I refused but Nuo and I were convinced by you because you said you would take care of her.
Imagine my surprise when four days later I received a phone call that my wife had been in a car accident, her legs had to be amputated and our daughter was dead."
"Brother, that wasn’t my fault." Wang Jie hurried to say.
"I found you holding the cold body of a child that you said was mine Jie." he raised his voice, " You were wailing as if the world had come to an end and blaming yourself for suggesting the trip. I was so consumed by my grief and worry for my wife who was in a coma that when you volunteered to make all the funeral arrangements I was grateful and never questioned your motives even once." Old master Wang said furiously.
"I was just trying to help." Wang Jie said. "You were overwhelmed..."
Old master Wang ignored her words and continued talking. "Imagine the shock I received when I discovered that my daughter in fact never died. She was handed over to a poor couple that was given five million on top of that to hand over the corpse of their own dead child. That dead child was then swapped for my real child." Old master Wang laughed in disbelief.
"You my own beloved sister, with your two hands got rid of my child and cried crocodile tears in front of me while presenting the corpse of a strange child to me that you claimed was mine." He said with heavy disappointment in his voice.
The gasps were bigger this time around, there was no disguising the immense shock that all the Wang’s had received.
Wang Jie stammered, tried to talk and collapsed onto her knees.
