Chapter 310: The poem

As she described it, on the screen behind, pictures of Hian with bruises were sliding by. Pictures of her husband with his mistress followed them and comments from different people on weibo as well.

"That man is a monster, how could he do that to her?" the old madam commented.

"He should be arrested and castrated." The queen dowager said.

"I agree." Madam An replied.

The men in the room who overheard them talking about castration crossed their legs or covered their crotches with something instinctively.

Rize: "Now Hian, can you take us back to the beginning, how did you meet your husband?"

Hian:" Well, I met him on a blind date which was arranged by my manager."

Rize: "Who wanted to meet the other first because one party usually reaches out to the other?"

Hian: "He reached out first, he sent me dozens of flowers in the beginning as a fan. Then some jewelry later on and a poem and he begged to meet me."

Rize: "So he pursued you?"

Hian: "Yes, he pursued me. As an actress, I cannot possibly pursue a man because should word get out about it I risk losing endorsements or roles. One has to be very careful when it comes to dating in this industry."

Rize: "I want us to clarify this point because your husband called you a gold digger on television in front of the whole nation. He made it sound as if you seduced him deliberately for his money. Right now what you are telling us is that he came after you and it was not the other way round."

Hian: "Absolutely, he wooed me first. It was not the jewelry, expensive cars or clothes that he sent me which made me accept him. I had my own jewelry and cars which i earned by working hard. It was the poetry, I accepted to meet him for a blind date because of that poem."

Rize: "Wow, he presented himself as a prince charming. I am sure that all of us would love to know what was in the poem that convinced a seasoned actress like you to meet him. You would all love to know, right?" she asked the audience.

Audience: "Yes." They responded enthusiastically.

Rize: "Then it’s a good thing that Hian kept that poem because we will be showing you the poem after this commercial break."

As the sponsor’s commercials played, the women discussed the first portion of the interview.

"I can’t believe she fell for him just because of a poem, Hian is more naïve than I thought." The queen dowager said.

"It must be because she did not date much before, didn’t you hear her saying that dating in their line of work is not easy." The old madam responded.

"Chi-Chi has Muyang ever written a poem for you?" his mother asked.

"It’s back." The old madam announced before she could reply.

On the television, Hian and Rize were beaming with bright smiles as the audience clapped.

Rize: "Everyone if you look at the screen you will be able to see the poem that won Hian’s heart and almost sealed her fate."

Poem: My favorite thing about you is your smile

You smile like the yellow sun

You smile a blooming sunflower

You smile like a pale moon

That lights up my darkest nights.

Rize: "It’s a pretty cute and simple poem, right?"

Some members of the audience answered yes and others no while others simply booed. Rize turned her attention to Hian.

Rize: "So this poem was the beginning of your whirlwind romance because you got engaged secretly, pregnant and married within only a few months of meeting him."

Hian: "Yes, like every romance in the beginning, he wooed me so romantically and with a determination that most of my suitors lacked before. He made so many promises and asked me to marry him. He blinded me so much that I had no time to ask questions or find out more about him. I think that was my biggest mistake."

Rize: "Yes and we have all seen the consequences of that mistake. I know you met his family members after the wedding, did none of them warn you about his infidelity, alcoholism or violent ways?"

Hian: "I met his parents but they barely said a word to me. I think in their eyes I was nothing more than a passing whim for their son. I guess with his philandering ways they never expected him to settle down. They did look at me with pity but I never knew why in the beginning. It wasn’t until his violent nature was exposed that I understood their pity. They know what a monster their son is and they don’t care."

"The parents are just as bad as their son." The old master commented.

"Shhh!" his wife said.

Rize: "So when did you first realize that he was violent man?"

Hian: "Probably the first time he slapped me for complaining about his drinking tendencies during my pregnancy. I was lonely, heavily pregnant, in a foreign country with no friends or family. All I had was him and yet he was never around. I think once my pregnancy progressed I was not attractive to him anymore so he went out looking for excitement. It dealt a heavy blow to my self esteem. "

"Tsk, tsk, what a weak man." old master Tao commented.

"Shhh." Old master Jun responded. His wife had been shushing him all this time it felt good to shush someone else.

Rize: "Sadly, this is not the first time we have heard such a story. Some men do cheat when their wives are pregnant."

Audience: "Boooo."

Rize: "You must have been very surprised and scared when he hit you for the first time. Did it cross your mind to leave in that moment? What thoughts if any came to your mind?"

Hian: "I was very surprised." She touched her cheek obliviously, "I could not believe that this man who loved me so much had just slapped me. If I was here at home I would have packed up and left immediately but in my situation I could not just up and leave. I actually waited up all night for him to return because I wanted him to come and apologize. I choked it up to a mistake which would never happen again.

When he returned home the next morning, he had flowers and a diamond necklace which of course I first rejected but he added tears onto his apology so I accepted."

Hian: "Wow, It’s unbelievable that you stayed, if you want to know more about what happened, we will be right back after these commercials."

"Why do they have so many damn commercials?" the emperor mumbled unhappily in his corner.

"I can’t believe you are paying so much attention to the story. You don’t usually watch television except for the news." Minister Su replied.

"I am watching to support my daughter, she is doing such a good job." He answered defensively.

Commercials ended as they were going back and forth.

Rize: "Welcome back to tea with a princess, our guest today is actress Hian who is telling us about the horrors in her short lived marriage.

"So, Hian, what happens after you forgive him for beating you the first time? Did you talk to anybody about it?"

Hian: "No, I didn’t tell anyone about it, I was too ashamed. This was my second mistake because by maintaining my silence, he did it again, and again, and again. It wasn’t just physical beating, he called me names like worthless and stupid. I became his personal punching bag in the house, my mountain of apology jewels grew bigger and bigger. It amazes me to date that I did not lose my child to his brutality."

Rize: "And we have all seen how brutal he can be, this video is the evidence of that brutality. If you have a weak heart, I would advise you not to watch it."

On the screen, that full video where he pulled her by the hair, slapped and kicked her multiple times was played.

The wincing, crying, gasps and shock from the audience was very loud. Some people turned away because it was too heart breaking to watch.

"That bastard." Old master Wang flung his walking stick towards the television and it narrowly missed hitting it.

"Calm down, we are all as furious as you are." Old master Jun told him. "If you break anything in our house you will pay heavily for it."
