Chapter 226: The billion box office director
"Lady Chi, please first relax and listen to me. I considered buying the robots but seeing the tension between different empires in the world, I figured your own empire had probably already put a ban on the buying and selling of such robots already." Mr. Smith replied quickly in a desperate voice.
To him, it sounded like she had written them off already and was ready to close the meeting.
"So why are you here then?" she asked cautiously.
If he already knew that she would not sell any robot to them then why come? Was he going to threaten her to hand them over forcefully?
"You see," the director answered this time. "I have a script which has been tucked away for two years; it’s about a ruined earth after a long war with intelligent robots. Eighty percent of the population has been wiped out and the remaining humans live under factions and guilds. Long story short, the only way to defeat the robots is for a human to infiltrate their central commanding center and change the code which will destroy their artificial intelligence and make them self-destruct. You can read the script personally.
I have been working with different laboratories and universities all over the world to find realistic looking robots for the role but I have failed, that is until Ian here showed me the video of your dancing robots. They are flexible and realistic. They move so effortlessly that one could mistake them for humans." Director Miles said with wonder in his voice.
"Look, before you say anything else, please listen. I have decided to shoot the movie from your empire, we will even give the actors and actresses in your brother’s company some roles. You can send people to monitor the shooting process. I am very desperate now, don’t say no just yet. This opportunity could be a win-win for both of us." he pleaded.
Some of her caution faded away, leaving her with a pro and con list in her head. First of all, the magnitude of such a heavy weight director was really massive. All the actors who featured in his movies usually shot to international fame, secondly, it was an opportunity to make money without taking too many risks. The robots would be on home ground, their software could not be touched and she would have people monitoring the whole process.
Truly, it was a good deal.
"What’s your role in this Mr. Smith and how much do I earn if I allow you to use my robots?" she asked. As always it was money first and everything else second.
Mr. Smith smiled broadly, he knew that if she was asking about money, then the deal was as good as settled.
"The budget for the movie is around two hundred fifty million dollars. We can pay one million dollars for each robot you can provide." He answered her confidently.
"That’s a big budget." She exclaimed.
"None of Mile’s movie has underperformed at the box office, he is the billion box office director. Each of his movies has earned billions, that’s why I am very confident about the outcome of this one too. Besides, we also have our own stars acting in the movie like Lady Scarlett, Arnold Smith, and Henry Rex."
"Smith." She said the name in questioning tone. "You are also named Smith, is he related to you?" she asked Ian Smith.
He smiled guiltily and answered "Yes, he is my younger brother. That’s why our family is pulling out all the stops for this one." He explained.
According to T4, the Smith’s owned about ten percent of the Morgan group. That ten percent alone was worth about a billion dollars. No wonder they could invest so much money to catapult the career of their child.
"Well we have a deal, however I want to invest in the movie as well. You said this was a business opportunity for me so let’s do real business. Coming to me for my robots is the same thing as going to a large building, entering a shop and you buy a few dresses. I am not a shop keeper Mr. Smith; I own the building where the shop resides."
Her phone chimed and T4 said, "Host, Muyang is caught up in a scandal." On her virtual screen, she saw Muyang and Shanxi in an embrace in front of a hotel. "I will find all the footage around the area host, I am sure Muyang is innocent."
She picked up a pencil slowly from her pen holder and snapped it into two. She could not be angry; Shanxi was always scheming so this too must be a scheme of some sort. Muyang was not a philanderer.
"I knew you would say that." Ian Smith grumbled and then he gave Miles who was guffawing a dollar.
"What’s so funny?" she asked them sternly.
If she was a teacher, her tone would be similar to that of a teacher telling a student in class, "Can you share the joke with the rest of us?"
"It’s nothing serious." Ian explained. "Miles just bet me a dollar that you would want to a piece of the pie. "
"Your friend is wise." She told him with a small smile on her face. "If you need to time to think about it, please go and do that. When you make up your mind, my assistant can meet you with some of my lawyers and we can sign the paperwork. Until then, I would prefer it if we keep the news of Miles Cameron directing a movie in this empire to ourselves."
As the peep star, she needed to be the first one to break this news.
"Of course, you will be hearing from us in two days. I need to discuss this with my family first." Ian explained.
Chi Lian nodded and stood up to walk them out. But she didn’t want to leave her children in the partition without any adult around.
Through the intercom, she asked Shuli to come into her office and watch the children.
"My babies are playing in there, I don’t want to leave the office empty in case of an accident." She explained to the two men who were waiting for her.
Ian Smith’s eyes lit up and they kept darting back and forth to the partition. "Can we take a look?" he asked eagerly.
"He loves babies." Miles explained when he saw Chi Lian’s curious look.
"Sure." She answered and led them to the partition where the children were peacefully playing. Mei-Mei was singing along or shouting along to a children’s song which the penguin companion was playing while flipping its wings in a dance movement of sort.
"I want that one too." Miles said determinedly. He was greedily eyeing the penguin. Ian on the other hand did not see the penguin, he was drooling over the adorableness of the babies. He even pinched little Monk’s cheeks.
"We can include it in the contract." Chi Lian smiled slyly after saying that. It’s why she had brought them there in the first place, this movie could be free promotion for her companion dolls after Chi Wei figured out a cost effective way of manufacturing them.
