Chapter 215: Friends no more.
The loud voices startled the children awake, while Mei-Mei was already familiar with everyone around, little monk tightened his arms around Chi Lian’s neck. He was not good at interacting with strangers; so far the only person he trusted completely was his mother.
"It’s okay baby," she bounced him up and down a bit, "These are members of our family and they won’t hurt you." She assured him.
"Chi-Chi," her mother approached her eagerly, "Give me my grandbaby, I haven’t seen him for a whole day." Mama Chi complained and she tried to take little Monk out of Chi Lian’s hands. The little boy however refused, hanging on to Chi Lian like a spider monkey to a tree.
"He is still quite fussy mother; I will give him to you when he is calmer." Chi Lian said as she pulled the cap covering little monk’s head down. With all the people in the house, someone would certainly comment on his lack of hair. She didn’t want such negative attention on her baby. "Who organized this party mother?" she asked.
She would have preferred to settle little monk in quietly, with just the close family members. There were about a hundred guests here as far as her eye could see.
Her mother’s face lit up with a bright smile. "This was Lili’s idea." She said, "She said you run off and had the babies in secret so you never got to have a baby shower. How could I stop her when she was so determined to celebrate you and the twins? It’s a good thing you have those pictures proving your pregnancy, she even dug them out and spread them through the house."
Mama Chi pointed to the walls which were filled with T4’s handiwork of pictures of a heavily pregnant Chi Lian in the American empire.
Xue Lili was really full of surprises and quite nosy, just like the old days. Chi Lian had been holding back on asking Lili about Wuxi’s real mother, she too was just as nosy but she had been holding back out of respect for her friend. Now, she was considering throwing her consideration out of the window.
"By the way, Lili invited some of your old friends from your high school days." Her mother whispered.
"What?" Chi Lian blurted her question out loud and frowned comically. "Why, doesn’t she know that I don’t get along with most of them anymore?"
Most of the old Chi Lian’s friends had turned their backs on her after her family lost its wealth. Now they were here, drinking her wine and laughing hypocritically. Her eyes trailed over the ones she could see. How many times had the old Chi Lian called them, asking for as little as one thousand Yuan and they had mocked her or lied to her?
These same people had borrowed money from her at one point in time when her family was wealthy. Most of them never even paid her back. How dare they drag their feet into her family’s home under the guise of friendship?
"Chi-Chi I know they wronged you but they were once your friends. Can’t you forgive them?" her mother asked her with deep concern in her voice. "You don’t have many friends anymore, even though you are a mother now you are still a young girl. You need to go out once in a while with your friends and just relax."
Chi Lian really abhorred her mother’s soft heart. She did not even know how many times her daughter had cried herself to sleep because of the words these so called friends of hers said about her. Their words cut her deeply, sharper than knife. Forgive!!!, no way. These people were probably here with ill intentions.
"Chi-Chi," Muyang’s voice came from behind her. "Are you having a party?" he asked her.
"Apparently it’s a surprise baby shower of some kind." She responded bluntly. "I don’t want them here Muyang." She said coldly.
Her mother raised her hands in the air and sighed. "Talk to her Muyang, she can’t push all of her friends away just because of some misunderstandings in the past."
"Misunderstandings!" Chi Lian parroted her mother and said the word through gritted teeth. "There is no misunderstanding mother, these people are vultures." She hissed.
Little monk fussed and she quickly lowered her voice. She bounced him around for a bit, "Sorry baby, mummy is just dealing with some displeasing humans." She said softly.
Muyang was confused, but judging from the look sour look on her face, his Chi-Chi must have been really wronged by these people. He was going to stand by her no matter what the issue was.
"Mother-in-law maybe..."
"Chi-Chi," Xue Lili’s eager voice cut off what Muyang was planning to say. Coming towards them with an overly eager puppy look on her face, Xue Lili proudly announced, "I tracked down all of our old friends, look even the class leader made it." She pointed to the woman next to her who was carrying Mei-Mei.
Chi Lian’s anger doubled when she saw the class leader. This woman Wei Shanxi was one of the people who killed the old Chi Lian’s self-esteem the most. They had a group chat for the old classmates, when her family lost its money, she called Wei Shanxi and told her to return the one hundred thousand Yuan she had lent her five months prior. The woman had played hide and seek with her, and then in the group chat she said that poor people should be ashamed to show themselves in society and they should just die if they chose to be lazy instead of working hard like the rest of them.
She said a lot more than that, everything she said was covered but it pointed to Chi Lian. She even said Chi Lian was a fool for not hooking up with a rich man when her family had money and now she was running around like a chicken begging for petty cash.
Someone even told her that they were calling her ’beggar Chi’ at their little get togethers.
Together with her group of followers, they made Chi Lian so uncomfortable that she exited the group.
She gave little Monk to Muyang and grabbed Mei-Mei from Shanxi roughly. The children must have known that mummy was not in a good mood because none of them fussed.
"What are you doing in my house Shanxi?"
Wei Shanxi flipped her hair back and looked in Muyang’s direction. "Lili told me that you have children, I came to meet them and see how you have been doing. We are old friends after all."
The woman could not have been more obvious about her less than honorable intentions. While she was talking to Chi Lian, her eyes were glued lasciviously to Muyang.
With her greedy eyes, she was admiring him and undressing him in her mind, fantasizing about being the woman by his side instead of Chi Lian.
Worse was watching her licking her lips in what she probably assumed was a seductive move. To Muyang she was a creep he wanted to get away from as quickly as possible.
