Chapter 183: A bitter sister

It didn’t take long for her to arrive in front of the building where Mu Shaoyan lived. It was an old building, four stories high. When she got inside, she discovered that it had no elevators; she had to take the stairs up to the top most floor to get to the apartment.

"T4, is the scan finished?"

"Yes host, there is no present danger to you in this building or around it."

With his assurance, she knocked on the door and said, "We are giving out free samples of new alcohol, we would love to get your opinion." She had bought a bottle from the system mall which she dangled in front of the peep hole in the door.

T4 had told her that Mu Shaoyan loved alcohol and playing cards. If there was something bound to make her open the door, it was alcohol.

The door was swung open by a woman in her mid-forties with shabby disorganized hair. She was dressed in an old dress which was once bright blue but had faded over the years. She immediately tried to grab the bottle from Chi Lian with speedy hands.

Chi Lian pulled her hand away just before Mu Shaoyan could grab it. "Mu Shaoyan, you should not be in such a hurry. Let us talk first; I have some questions to ask you?"

"How do you know my name?" Mu Shaoyan asked worriedly?

"Let’s just say I have done a lot of research on you and your family." She replied and dangled the bottle of alcohol before Shaoyan. "I will give you this and more however you need to tell me about your sister."

"That bitch." Shaoyan cursed and spat on the floor, "I will happily sell her out for free if I need to. But you look like you have some money. I want fifty thousand."

If the woman had known how wealthy or how desperate Chi Lian was, she would probably have asked for more.

"I will give you the money." Chi Lian agreed, "just make sure you leave nothing out."

"Come in." Shaoyan opened her door wider and Chi Lian entered.

If it were not for desperation, she would have turned around and left the house immediately. It was dirty and smelled like wet mold. A pile of dirty laundry was sitting in the corner and a few flies were buzzing around it. Dirty plates were everywhere and empty bottles of cheap alcohol were piled up near the entrance to the bedroom which was open. It was clear that this woman spent most of her money on alcohol and nothing much else.

She wrinkled her nose in disgust as she tried to find a clean place to sit. Once that failed, she opted to stand.

Mu Shaoyan who was comfortable in her apartment sat in one of the only two chairs in the tiny living room. She then looked at Chi Lian with a sneer on her face and asked, "What do you want to know about that selfish bitch?"

"Her life, friends, ambitions, plans and where I can find her." Chi Lian mentioned everything she could think of.

"Hmph," Mu Shaoyan snorted, "Well you certainly won’t find her here. That wench abandoned our family as soon as she finished high school and she never looked back. She never even returned when our parents died. She always thought she was too good for this place, for our family. She hated that we were poor, that we lived in such a small apartment, that our parents had no ambitions and were comfortable working in one of the sugar factories.

She was always ashamed of them, never mind that they sacrificed everything to put her through school. I could have gone to school too you know," she looked at Chi Lian wistfully, "I could have made something out of my life if that bitch did not hog the little resources we had by showing off her clever brain.

The teachers called her a genius and everyone in this town acted as if she was the best thing to ever happen to it. They claimed she would bring glory to Xunwai. I was forced to drop out of school and work as a cleaner in a sugar factory so that she could get into private school, with tutors. Our parents claimed she would support the whole family once she got a degree and a cushy job. They chose her over me." Mu Shaoyan laughed manically and looked at a picture on the small table leaning against the wall and yelled at it.

"Well that was stupid of you dad and mom, your precious daughter did not even come to bury you. I hope you are regretting this as you burn in hell for ruining my life." She laughed once more.

"Mu Shaoyan, I want to know if you know where your sister is, who her closest friends were and anybody she could still be in contact with from this town." Chi Lian quickly stepped in before the woman could get lost in her bitterness and lose track of what she wanted to hear.

"In this town, there is nobody like that. She had no friends because she wanted desperately to fit in with the rich kids. The rich kids only used her; in the end she even got her pregnant. Can you imagine that, the town genius pregnant before finishing high school! "She laughed crazily. "Do you want to know what’s crazier?" she looked at Chi Lian eagerly.

"What?" she asked reluctantly.

"She knocked the pregnancy out and sat for the College entrance exam. What’s even scarier is that she got in with the third best score in the city. That bitch must have swallowed up the luck of our entire family." Mu Shaoyan said with a vicious look in her eyes.

The woman really hated her sister; there was no doubt about it.

"Who was the father of the child?" Chi Lian asked curiously. Perhaps the pregnancy was a result of young love and she still kept in touch with the man who got her pregnant.

"The father," Mu Shaoyan laughed. "Lady, who do you think was more pitiful in this story, the teenage girl who got pregnant or the father of her child?"

Chi Lian wanted to say the teenage girl of course. She was young and pregnant out of wedlock. Obviously everyone would gossip, ostracize and point fingers at her.

"I bet you think it’s the teenage girl right?" Mu Shaoyan asked with a sneer. "But you are wrong; you see one does not lay with a wolf without expecting to be bitten."

"Huh," Chi Lian was confused.

Mu Shaoyan lit a cigarette and took a puff, then she said, "You see, back then there was a rumor that either the son of the Ye family or one of the male teachers in school got her pregnant. But there was no conclusive evidence and she never said who it was. Do you know that prestigious universities can reject you if you have flawed moral character?

All the rumors and her pregnancy and abortion would have made her ineligible for recruitment into any prestigious university and yet my sister still made it. She even got a scholarship somehow. There was a rumor that the Ye family paid money to get her in.

Now ask yourself, if it was really true, why did the Ye family do such a thing. She must have had something on them.

Anyway, a few years later the Ye family all died in a fire inside their home, except for their son Ye Chenzen who told no one and went out drinking with his friends that night so he survived.

Then a few months later the teacher from that pregnancy rumor also died in a fire after an unexplainable explosion in his car.

The following year Ye Chenzen broke his spinal cord in a rock climbing accident. The Ye Chenzen, who grew up climbing rocks and mountains for fun in the rain with his friends, broke almost every bone in his body climbing rocks on a hot summer day." She said sarcastically.

Chi Lian drew her own conclusion from Mu Shaoyan’s words. "You think your sister had a hand in their deaths."
