Chapter 158: What did the old Chi Lian do?
Chi Lian was hopelessly puzzled. She had considered many women to be her rivals when it came to Muyang’s affection but she never considered her own daughter.
"You." She pinched Mei-Mei’s cheek. "Are you my beloved daughter or my co-wife?" she asked playfully.
Right on cue, Mei-Mei cried and looked Muyang pitifully.
"There, there, mummy is bad." Muyang said as he cuddled Mei-Mei and comforted her.
"Eh," she looked at Muyang in wonder. Was he throwing her under the bus to make his daughter happy? "What do you mean by mummy is bad?"
"Mummy is making Mei-Mei cry, who is a bad mummy?" Muyang continued talking to Mei-Mei childishly and playfully, ignoring the betrayed and outraged look on Chi Lian’s face.
Everyone at the table was laughing at her expense.
"She really takes after you sis." Chi Rui commented. "I thought I was seeing things when I noticed that you both have the same little black mole in your right eyes but if you add the similarity in your mannerisms, I can’t help thinking that she takes you completely."
"What?" Mama Chi pushed her chair back and hurriedly came to take a closer look at Mei-Mei’s eye. Papa Chi hovered behind her, distracting Mei-Mei so that they could observe what Chi Rui claimed to have noticed.
She observed the presence of a small black mole on the corner of the little girl’s eyeball. It was only noticeable if someone was looking for it.
"Huh, it really is there." Mama Chi said with shock in her voice. "It’s unbelievable, honey, what are the odds?" she asked her husband.
"Truly uncanny, I can’t believe what I am seeing." Papa Chi responded.
He looked at Chi Lian and Mei-Mei for a while, pondering on something. Finally, he opened his mouth to say, "Chi-Chi, have you ever considered doing a DNA test with Mei-Mei?"
"What?" a collective question went around the table.
"Father," Chi Lian said in an outraged voice. What exactly was he trying to imply? She had never given birth in her life.
Mama Chi realized that Papa Chi’s words could easily be understood unless she rectified the situation.
"Chi-Chi, your father is not implying anything weird by his statement. It’s just that your grandmother, his mother had the same mole. And so do you, now the fact that Mei-Mei has it as well is either the world’s biggest coincidence or she could be related to us." She explained.
The children were simply stunned, Papa Chi never talked about his parents with them. It was the first time they were hearing about the history of the mole.
"I really think you should do a DNA test, just to rule any ridiculous theories out." Papa Chi insisted. He did not have any sisters or brothers. If Mei-Mei was possibly related to them, it was because someone in this family had a child. Since the mole seemed to appear only in women Chi-Chi was his only suspect.
Chi Lian laughed at the ridiculousness of his words. "Father, I am pretty sure I would remember if I had given birth in the past. That is not something anybody forgets easily."
"Unless someone used your egg without your knowledge." Chi Zimo said absentmindedly before shoving a piece of meat into his mouth.
"Don’t be ridiculous; sister would not donate her eggs recklessly." Chi Wei kicked him under the table.
Everybody nodded their heads in agreement, only mama Chi noticed the look of horror on Chi Lian’s face. She knew her daughter quite well enough to know that something was up.
"Chi-Chi, what did you do?" She asked warily.
"Mother, what are you talking about, we should eat." Chi Lian’s eyes darted back and forth like those of a thief who had been caught with their hands in the jar.
Mama Chi was not the only one who noticed that look, Muyang who was biting Mei-Mei’s fingers and pretending to eat them also noticed it. His eyes could not help but move from Chi Lian to Mei-Mei in observation. Could they be related? Did she donate her eggs?
Chi Lian smiled nervously at him, "What?" she mouthed.
"I heart you." He mouthed back at her and then he winked.
The rice she had been quickly forcing into her mouth to avoid conversation choked her and she coughed for a bit. Mama Chi quickly came and patted her on the back then gave her a glass of water.
"Slow down, nobody is going to steal your food." She told her.
"Yes." She replied nervously. Inside she was cursing Muyang for teasing her like that at the dinner table.
The rest of the dinner easily went by with no further instances except for Chi Zimo gorging himself full on her sweet and spicy chicken which her mother had prepared specifically for her.
Muyang and Mei-Mei returned to the Jun family home and she locked herself away in her bedroom to think immediately. There was a lot for her to unpack, starting with the fact that the old Chi Lian donated her eggs when she was at the university.
She had read an article about a woman who could not have children because she once had cancer and chemotherapy destroyed her eggs. The woman had lamented about how sad it was that few women were donating eggs so she decided to do it on a whim because she was feeling sympathy for such women.
Later, she changed her mind after the procedure and requested for the eggs to be destroyed. She could not imagine having a biological child out there somewhere in the world and not knowing that child. The doctor had assured her that it would be done immediately and she forgot all about it.
"How in the world did I not remember her doing this?" Chi Lian asked herself. "I thought I received all her memories." She groaned.
The memory had only come to her after Chi Zimo said it at the table. She could not help but wonder if Chi Zimo was just smart or he had a clue about what the old Chi Lian did.
What if the eggs were not destroyed and Mei-Mei was really her child?
"Host, is there a difference, you already adopted the child. Whether she is yours biologically or not should not make a difference."
"But it does, T4. If she is my child, then the doctor lied to the old Chi Lian and probably sold her eggs illegally. What if she has more children out there my God!!!!!" she sat down on the bed and bowed her head into her hands at the horrific realization of the outcome of such an action.
"She could have ten kids out there T4." she said exaggeratedly. "What am I going to tell everyone, what do I tell Muyang? Oh Chi Lian, what did you do?" she asked herself.
"Host she and you are one and the same person. The old Chi Lian is dead and gone; everything she did is now on you."
