Chapter 620: Severus makes a discovery.
Scarlet had to be dragged back to the space ship by Apheitos. She was exhausted, all scratched up and her clothes had turned into rugs. The first day of supernatural training was not as fun as she expected.
He tossed her onto a bed as if she was baggage and then he vanished. Severus on the other hand would not let her sleep when she looked like she had just walked through a battlefield. It would freak the others out.
He teleported her to the bathroom and turned the water on. Scarlet moaned and lifted herself lazily. Her fingers could hardly move and when she tried to use her flame, it sparked like a weak dying fire.
"You need to rest and allow your power to circulate." Severus reminded her.
She sighed and fell back into the bathtub. "Alex, get a robot butler to help me take a bath."
Why move when something else could do all your moving for you? The robot butler came in and started wiping her body down carefully. Scarlet’s mind traveled back home and she wondered how everyone was fairing.
It had been a while since she last communicated with them face to face to avoid the risk of their minds being read which would result in her tracking. If today’s training had proved anything, it was that she was unequipped to handle any battle. If she couldn’t fight off a thousand demons then she could not fight off even a quarter of the strength a deity wielded.
Even though she knew this, she still missed them and wished she could reach out. This was the first time she would ever be away from home on her own.
"Ha-ha, home." She laughed to herself and muttered. "I miss home already."
Severus lifted his head, looked at her and then laid back down. He did not say it but he missed home too and not the underworld but the Blue star. For all her talk of making a home in the underworld Scarlet had not even stepped foot in the house she purchased there.
"Seby, do you think they are searching for me already....for us?" she asked.
"I am sure that every corner of the Blue star has been turned over already. My hope is that we return before the lord of death does something cruel. But I spoke to my father and told him that should things ever seem like they have reached a boiling point, he should reach out to me using our bond and I will tell you then we can return. When the gods are angry, it’s the humans that pay the price.
So, train fast and train hard. We are not here to play around so give it your all. Whatever Apheitos tells you to do, you should do. War in our world can be brutal Scarlet, it’s worse than any human war you have ever seen."
She sent the robot butler away because the quick bath was done and she had been dried off. As she pondered on Severus’s words, she teleported to the bedroom and lay down on the bed. Her eyes focused on the pitch black view from the window of her room. One of her hands caressed her stomach and she smiled when the children moved.
Outside, something howled and her eyes moved, in search for the danger which was far beyond the ship. It sounded like a coyote, a dying one. Death could not be avoided even here.
"What are you thinking?" Severus asked her.
He had teleported himself next to her and lay down beside her. He was looking outside just as she was.
"I am wondering if there is a solution other than the war everyone seems to be sure is upon us. They are just children; there is no need for everyone to pull out weapons and cause the skies to rumble."
"You seem to be wavering." He said annoyance in his voice.
Scarlet turned her head away from the window and switched on the television. The noise, she hoped would drown out some of her most bothersome thoughts.
"Don’t avoid me Scarlet; tell me if we are wasting our time here. Maybe you will be more motivated if I tell you that there is a rumour going around about fate getting ready to nurture an immortal prophet. They say it’s the child of the underworld, born of a daughter of the death.
The only one in the underworld that is expecting children is you, as far as I know. It sounds to me like fate is gearing up to claim one of the children. And then, there is the child that has been sharing the wings with you." Severus paused and then said, "Wings that look so similar to those of life angels.
The only underworld creatures with wings are the natural born reapers. So, unless the father of your..." Severus paused again.
Suddenly, a thought crossed his mind, something that he had never even thought of before but now, the pieces started fitting together like a puzzle. "How did I not see it? How? How? How have I been so blind?"
All this while, he had been wondering why his mother and father paid so much attention to Scarlet. He had asked himself what possible reason the hound lord would be interested in the welfare of a female reaper but he didn’t dwell on his suspicions.
He wondered why sometimes Esong had red eyes. There was only one reaper with red eyes in the underworld for crying out loud!! The first time he saw them something had nudged at the back of his mind but he was so caught up with other things that he missed that simple clue.
And Frost! Severus groaned and lowered his head, burying it in the covers of Scarlet’s bed. This explained why he treated Esong with reverence. He knew the true identity of the human all along.
The hammer which put the final nail in the coffin of his suspicions was Carnelia. The fire goddess had said that Scarlet belonged to the strongest natural born reaper of the underworld. He had assumed that she was still on the business of matching Scarlet up with Nyx after Esong the human died but now he could see how those words had meant something else entirely.
"I should have seen it." Severus mumbled.
His mind recalled the very first time Esong had sniffed Scarlet out on that space ship. He had said it himself back then, that it was not normal and something was off about the human. Scarlet’s pregnancy itself together with those suspicions should have been the biggest reason for him to dig deeper.
Severus gasped as if he was being choked. One more memory crossed his mind, the failed hypnosis. He had been so angry with Scarlet for abusing the free will of a human that he didn’t dwell on the fact that the hypnosis didn’t work.
As a matter of fact, no deity bothered to come and check why didn’t work when Flan reported the failure to them. Failed hypnosis was a big deal, someone always showed up to rectify the problem but no one had come.
"I should have known." He groaned.
But, how should he have known? The lord of death had tested Esong personally back then and declared him human. So, what had they all missed? What is it that he had not seen? More importantly, why were he and Scarlet left out of the loop when everyone knew the truth?
