Chapter 576: Lythia’s ex husband
Lythia and Carnelia acted as if they did not see Love bothering Scarlet. They continued eating pockies and watching the television.
Scarlet sighed and shoved a pocky into her mouth. It was not as if Love was heavy. She figured that the goddess would let go when she was tired of comforting her.
She was just grateful that they didn’t latch onto the whole wedding desire thing. It had crossed her mind a time or two but that was it.
"I once married a king." Lythia shared.
Scarlet’s mouth fell slightly open. She couldn’t decide if the topic was worth picking up or not. If Lythia wanted to elaborate, she would, after all, nobody had prompted her to make the revelation.
It was not Lythia that elaborated but Carnelia. The fire goddess laughed and said, "Aah, King Tankun the conqueror. He was the handsome footman of the former king and you gave him wealth, strength and power. He repaid you by stabbing you in the heart and making another his queen."
Lythia looked at Scarlet who obviously had more questions and undeniable interest in the story and told her, "It’s not the wedding that matters, it’s the heart of the man you are with. Tankun married me in a very public lavish ceremony. He kissed my feet every night and promised to be loyal forever because my arrival in his life was a blessing."
"And then he stabbed her." Carnelia jumped in again.
She kept joyfully emphasizing the stab, even demonstrating it with her hands.
Lythia nodded. "I have never lived a human life since then. It’s not worth it to live among the lesser creatures. Betrayal is what most of them excel at."
Ignoring the lesser creatures comment, Scarlet asked her, "What happened to King Tankun?"
This sounded like a movie. A goddess came to earth, willingly married a human, gave him power, strength and wealth and he stabbed her to marry a human he loved.
"Don’t know, don’t care." Lythia answered dismissively. "But he is probably living a cursed human life somewhere. A human that kills a god even when we are in human form is cursed for eternity. Misery follows them, reincarnation after reincarnation and they die the most terrible deaths in every life."
Scarlet turned to Carnelia. She wouldn’t waste a moment feeling sorry for the king who killed the woman that gave him everything.
"What about you? Have you married any humans?"
"Never, never, never." Carnelia denied strongly.
"Is it revulsion or something else?" Scarlet asked her.
"Simple common sense. I have lived among the humans many times but I do not partake in any sexual activities with them. There are other species in the universe that I prefer. Besides, we are gods, sex and marriage is not a priority for us. We indulge when we want but we can go millions of years without such frivolous companionship." Carnelia explained.
The door beeped and then opened as Scarlet was readying herself to ask Carnelia for examples of the species she preferred to humans. As soon as the fire goddess made that statement, Scarlet recalled seeing her kissing that not so human bartender in the Seven suns hotel. It was the first time she met the red haired goddess. She filed that question away for later.
It was Esong who came in, obviously in search of Scarlet with the way he kept his eyes on her from the moment he walked in.
"Excuse us." Lythia said.
She and Carnelia both took one of Love’s arms and took the unwilling goddess out of the kitchen.
Esong watched them leaving and then he looked at Scarlet and the box on the kitchen counter. The last remaining pocky box had not been hidden quick enough.
His lips twitched. He assumed that she had hidden herself away to snack. He perched himself next to her, sitting down on the kitchen counter.
He was looking down at her while she looked up at him.
"Who are your new friends?" he asked her.
"Old ones." she answered.
"From the capital?" he asked.
He assumed that they were friends from her old life when she was living away from the Su’s. They looked like they were from wealthy families judging from their outfits. They wore no identifying cloaks so he couldn’t tell if they were noble or not.
"Something like that." she replied. "Is the empress looking for me?"
He shook his head and pointed to himself. "I am the one who is searching for my wife. You know that I cannot be without you even for a second."
"Ha-ha," she laughed, dryly.
He was obviously making a joke but she didn’t find it to be very funny.
He reached his hand out and touched her messy hair on top of her head. He had seen one of her friends huffing her back so he assumed said friend was the one who caused this new look.
"There is a time when you would have laughed at my silly joke enthusiastically. Now, it’s almost like you have to pull that laughter from a deep place within you." he said, in a low unsure voice.
She was looking at him when he said that and she looked away, turning her eyes to the floor.
He grimaced and bent his body down slightly, grabbing one of her hands and twirled her so that she ended up standing between his parted legs. In this position, he could look into her eyes and she would not be able to hide.
He preferred it when they were so close like this. Close enough that he could count every single long eyelash and pore on her skin.
"What is going on with us lately?" he asked her.
She lowered her face but he wouldn’t let her. He put his hands on her cheeks and made her look up at him.
"Don’t__, don’t look away from me because it feels like you are physically tearing my heart out with your bare hands." he told her, desperately.
He could feel it deep down inside that something between them was still broken. They were on speaking terms again, she smiled at him, sent him food, talked to him and acted like her old self but there was something missing now or it was gone and he couldn’t put a finger on it.
She put her hands over his and smiled softly. "We are fine Esong. We just haven’t been spending as much time together as we used to. You have your mecha warrior duties and I have to govern the planet and take care of our son and our families. It’s what wives of mecha warriors do. I think you are stressed and over thinking things."
"No, this has nothing to do with stress. My instincts are my sharpest sense. Something doesn’t feel right Scarlet and it terrifies me because I don’t know what it is. I cannot fix what I can’t see, you need to talk to me.
For crying out loud, It’s your sister’s engagement party and you are locked inside a kitchen instead of hovering around her like every sister does on this day."
It was abnormal behavior given how close the Su siblings were. The woman who planned a slumber party for her sister was not the same woman standing in front of him.
"I am not just Carolyn’s sister, I am also the governor. You saw me out there, I was greeting important people.I am just emotional today and I didn’t get much sleep last night but otherwise I am fine, and so are we." She replied. Her voice was heavy with defensiveness.
