Chapter 306: Victory or not?

"Boring." the deity of lies chuckled.

On the wall, Scarlet continued going strong and she scaled past the last crossing point, without even realizing.

Suddenly, she just found herself on the ground, exactly where she had vanished from. The first though on her mind was that she had failed, and somehow been eliminated, but she couldn’t figure out how that happened. Where exactly had she gone wrong?

"Severus," she called out.

"Down here." the hound replied.

He observed her, looking for a white flag in her hands or any sign of injury. It was not uncommon to come down from the wall with scrapes, tears and bleeding from a spot or two. Almost every reaper bled or left a drop of blood on that wall.

"What happened?" she asked.

"I should be asking you that?" he answered. "You have been on the wall for an entire day and a half."

"What?" her head tilted to the side as she expressed her dismay with the look of disbelief on her face. She was certain that she had been on that wall for a couple of hours, like four of them. "How is that possible? I have only been gone for a while."

He showed her the time on the forum and said, "I can assure you Scarlet, an entire day has gone by. Did you make it to the last crossing point or not?"

She raised her hand and run it through her loose hair and shook her head. "I am not sure." she told him. "One minute I was on the wall and the next I wasn’t."

"Where is your flag, the white one?" he asked her.

She waved her hand once and it appeared, coming from her soul gourd. It was no longer white but black.

"What does this mean?" she asked him, was it a victory or not?

The other hounds, Frost and guardian reapers who were listening so obviously to her conversation with Severus craned their heads for a better view or simply came closer.

"This means you made it." one of the hounds said, in an excited voice.

Immediately, the other hounds started howling, filled with excitement. Frost gripped her shoulders tight and shook her, "Hey, were you the second or third?"

Scarlet was rather confused, because she had not seen anybody up there with her. How could she possibly know if she was the second or third when she was not aware that she had even crossed over and made it.

She shook her head and shrugged.

"You don’t know!!" Ezrah asked her.

"I don’t, really, I don’t know anything." she assured them.

The enthusiasm and excitement of the hounds and repears around her went down a bit. Those whose feet were in the air came back down to the ground and they eyed her with disbelief or uncertainty in their eyes.

"That doesn’t matter," Ezrah declared, "You made it, whether you are the second or third, you made it. A guardian reaper has made top three after how many years?" she looked at Frost to answer this question.

"Seventy, I think." he replied.

"No, it’s Eighty two." another said.

"Century, it’s an entire century." a female hound assured them all.

Just like that, a debate broke out as hounds and reapers argued over the last time a guardian reaper had made it to top three in the duo leaderboard games.

Ezrah could not take it anymore and she shouted, "Everyone, listen to me, it doesn’t matter anymore, the point is that the past has been wiped away and we have returned."

The guardian reapers cheered, waving their staffs high in the air.

"Hound, hound, hound." Hawk, a friend, that was not a guardian reaper broke into a chant. He used the name which was commonly used to refer to Scarlet in the underworld.

Other guardians joined him, and they chanted, "Hound," over and over.

However, you would think they were praising the hell hounds because they broke into a joyful howl, release fire and smoke from their throats and breaking up the gatherings of other reapers who were close by as they blinked from one place to another.

"Hey guys, this was a partnership, do not forget my partner cold frost."

Frost blushed as they started chanting his name, and he broke into a weird happy dance and released his cold wind energy. The celebration broke off quickly as everyone scowled or glared at him and went away.

"Hey guys, I didn’t mean it, come on." he whined as he run after his friends.

"Oh, that fool." Severus said under his breath.

"I am going to deliver my souls." Scarlet told him.

"I will go with you, and I can finally go home and get my personal time away the others." Severus sounded happy and relieved.

She looked down, waved her hand and changed him into his puppy version. Then, while he was outraged, she carried him in her hands and even kissed him on the head.

"Thank you for sacrificing your personal time and keeping an eye on all my competitors."

"Tch, don’t think you are getting out of your cooking duties reaper. Do you know when I last had a proper meal?" he answered.

"A whole sheep, I am going to roast an entire sheep for you." she told him.

"Now that’s the kind of thing I like to hear, make it two sheep." he told her.

"Can you even finish two sheep?" she asked him.

"I can finish one hundred." he spoke definitively.

They continued on with this playful banter even when she delivered the souls and one very real zombie.

"Where did you find a sick escaped beast?" Severus asked.

"Beast," she repeated.

A gate keeper appeared, and carried it away, just as they did when she brought the soul feeder. The only difference was that only one gate keeper had come.

"I thought it was human." she said.

"No, it’s a beast from hell disguised to appear human." Severus explained.

"Then how did it get on the wall? It appeared out of nowhere and tried to take my head off. I had to use the mist cage skill and trap it in my soul gourd." she explained.

Severus kept quiet, appearing to be deep in contemplation while she received payment for the souls and herbs for the sick beast which escaped.

"Use this valerian root at night before you go to sleep, it will keep some things out of your night." another gate keeper appeared, shoved an herb at her and vanished.

"Hmm, is that a part of the competition this year?" Severus wondered. "But, who cares, all I want now are my sheep so let’s go home."
