Chapter 301: The woes of the grey star

The information shared by governor Lancaster was quite serendipitous because the recorded suicide rates for the grey star were neither high nor of triggering concern to the authorities.

The mecha warrior’s association kept an eye on it because the suicide rates were highest among mecha warriors. Why had this not been on their radar?

This question plagued Esong’s mind and he shared a questioning look with Folsom.

"Not where we are standing per say, but the higher cliffs which are directly above the water." Governor Lancaster who had yet to notice the frowns on the faces of the mecha warriors pointed to the higher cliffs he was mentioning.

"Why haven’t you shared this information with the authorities?" Esong asked him, sternly.

"Oh, we have." Foura said. "But as long as the deaths were not of mecha warriors then they were not of much importance."

"Suicide among ordinary impoverished citizens of the grey star is not exactly a priority among those live at the top." Governor Lancaster said, with a look of disappointment on his face. "We understand clearly where we stand in the hierarchy of star planets. I don’t even think the emperor has ever heard about this."

"He hasn’t." Markey hurried to confirm.

Governor Lancaster looked at Markey and raised his eyebrows while pursing his lips.

"This matter obviously needs an in depth study." Ian said, "From the number of jumpers, the cause to how it can be minimized."

Governor Lancaster shook his head and said, "Don’t dig deep, the answer is poverty and hunger. No mortal man can endure a hopeless suffering for many years without thinking about ending their lives a time or two. Most are cowards, they come to the cliffs and turn back but there are those who make up their minds and nothing can be done about it. No matter how many rations we receive, it’s never enough or satisfying. Especially those low quality nutrient solutions which I can only equate to water. What we need is a steady source of income so that the people can buy food or better quality nutrient solutions for themselves, send their children to good schools, access medical care and live good lives overall. That’s how we minimize suicide rates on the grey star, otherwise, not even a speech from the emperor or temporary increment in nutrient solutions is going to help. On this star, people don’t even want to have children, because they are afraid that their children will repeat the cycle. We also have the biggest number of unnatural births," He saw the confusion on their faces and added, "Children born without mental strength."

"That’s not unnatural." Folsom blurted, "I have a sister who has no mental strength and we have access to everything."

"You have just the one sister but here we have entire families, you cannot liken your situation to theirs." Lancaster rebuked him, passionately. "You know what else we lack, med beds. We have just two med beds on the entire planet with zero doctors. The grey star has many problems which those in the capital prefer to ignore."

Esong and his men looked at each other, partly filled with guilt because no matter what they tried to say in this situation, nothing would appease the governor. Not unless they did something about the problems here.

Markey asked himself why these issues had never been presented before the emperor. "Have you sent an appeal for emergency assistance to the house of ministers?"

"We have sent one thousand thirty three appeals and not once have we received a proper response." Foura said, in angry voice.

"No way." Markey blurted out, it was impossible. The emperor would have heard about it surely.

"You can believe what you want." Governor Lancaster scoffed derisively.

To all, it appeared like the governor was expecting nothing from the royals, he had all but surrendered to the tide of unfairness in the empire.

"I promise to look into it, I will start looking into it right now." he said with an urgency in his voice. He excused himself, and walked back to the space ship.

They all watched him leave, knowing that he was going to call the emperor, his father and directly address this matter.

Some, like Ian and Cedric now appeared to be quite uncomfortable, not knowing what to say, or where to begin. Folsom was tapping his right foot slowly on the ground and Esong just looked apprehensive and deep in thought.

"Look, gentlemen," Governor Lancaster said slowly, " I did not mean to dump the woes of the grey star on you, I was simply sharing our hardships. I will be very grateful if you still want to buy the land. As long as measures are put in place, we can limit the access of ordinary citizens on to the property. I know that I am being shameless but we need the money. I will also understand if you change your minds because the history of this place is...., ugly." he said, after a small pause as he searched for the right word to use in reference to the many deaths this land had witnessed.

Perhaps he could take them to other places, and they would still be willing to purchase land. It would be great news for their development if the world knew that general Esong and governor Scarlet had property on the grey star. Their names held so much value currently and other rich people would come scrambling to buy land, build or open businesses if this fell into their ears.

Dez Mino, from Esong’s side secretly tugged on his cape and shook his head indiscriminately, urging the general not to make the purchase.

"I will take it, I mean "we" since it’s my wife’s idea. I believe in her vision and if she wants this place then it must be worth something." Esong declared very confidently.

Not even the history of Kamikaze had shaken him up in the slightest bit.

"General!!" Dez squealed.

"Show me a place in the capital where blood has not been shed or a corpse not fallen and I will give you a million star coins." Esong said to Dez.

There, they cleaned up the blood with water and machines, replaced the cracked buildings or floors and ensured that every trace of death was wiped away, especially in winter. But it did not change the fact that someone or something had died.

"How much are you charging for an acre?" he asked governor Lancaster.

Governor Lancaster was pleasantly surprised, but his mouth could still not help asking, "Are you sure?"

"Don’t you want to go through with the sale?" Esong questioned.

"No, no, please." Lancaster waved his hands urgently. "I mean yes, I want to go through with it."

"Two hundred thousand star coins per acre." Foura interrupted, glared at her boss, the governor and pushed her small tablet terminal in front of Esong. "This is the total for all the land you want and this is the account to which the money can be transferred. The first thing we intend to do is buy better nutrient solutions, oats, corn flour and rice for the people."

"Do not attempt to blackmail me emotionally." Esong told her.

"I apologize," Foura bowed. She did not want him to bargain on the price, that’s why she had mentioned those words.

Esong sent the price to Scarlet who was on the blue star, preparing for a live broadcast. But, she had told Alex to keep an eye on her calls and texts, especially anything Esong related.

She initiated a voice call immediately, and stepped out of the kitchen to seek some privacy.

Esong explained the history of Kamikaze to her in one minute, and she still approved the purchase.

In her mind, she attributed the attraction of death in that place to the underworld stone and the tree.
