Chapter 62: Chapter 62 Pain and Longing (Bonus)
My heart sank. ’He burnt them? Every single one?’
Then that meant... whoever did this wasn’t from the pack. ’If she is not from the pack, it is Alpha Allison... But would she do business with creatures that Damon despises so much?’
I swallowed the lump in my throat, my voice small but firm. "What if the witch isn’t one of yours? What if they snuck in?"
’Or you invited them in?’
He didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, Damon stood up, his massive frame casting a shadow over me. His boots echoed as he slowly walked around me, like a predator circling its prey.
"You’re trying too hard to sound innocent, Ember," he said, his tone cold and sharp like a blade. "But you’re forgetting one thing."
’And what might that be?’ I rolled my eyes inwardly in exasperation.
"You’re not just any girl. You’re the one who bit me."
A chill ran through my bones. ’What does that have to do with the situation at hand now? Maniac!’
"I let you live after that." His voice dropped. "Even when the rogues came for you, I protected you. I even let you sleep in my room, ride my horse..."
His voice caught, sharp with disgust. "You think you can take advantage of that softness, don’t you?"
My eyes widened. Softness? Was that what it was to him?
"I never tried to take advantage of anything!" I snapped, finally breaking. "I’ve done nothing but obey you! Even when you humiliated me in front of your packs! Even when you let them call me pet! I’ve never gone against you!"
He paused, his darkened gaze brooding over me.
"You’re angry now, aren’t you?" I whispered, my breath trembling. "Not because of the locket. But because you trusted me. And now you think you were wrong."
’Okay, I’m only probing. I don’t believe he trusts me.’
Silence fell on the room like a blanket.
Then, a long exhale. His steps came closer, then halted right in front of me.
A strong hand tilted my chin up. I flinched. His hold was light; he didn’t apply any pressure. Instead, he just looked at me.
Those stormy eyes of his searched mine, and for the first time tonight... they didn’t look furious.
They looked conflicted.
"I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt..." he murmured, almost too softly. "If I find out you’re lying to me, Ember, I’ll make sure you wish you were dead."
"I know," I said, my voice barely a whisper.
His fingers lingered on my chin before pulling away. He turned his back, heading to the door.
"You’ll stay here until I figure out the truth. No one is to speak to her unless I allow it," he barked toward the guards.
"Understood, Alpha," came their response.
He opened the door and stepped out without another word. The door slammed shut behind him, the echo of his boots fading down the hall.
And just like that, I was alone again.
Tears spilled freely now. Not because of the pain in my knees, and not because of the cold stone pressing against my legs.
But because of that look. That moment where I saw him—just for a second—not as my captor or Alpha... but as someone who wanted to believe me but didn’t know how.
......
Outside the cell, Damon walked briskly through the hall. His jaws clenched tightly.
"Why did you let her go?!" Beowulf paced within his head.
"I didn’t let her go," Damon said calmly.
"Liar. That locket is the only possession we have of her. How could you let that filthy Omega go just because she told you some kind words and cried in your face!"
"Beowulf!" Damon snapped back, his voice trembling with anger and a hint of pain. "Do I look like someone who would do such a thing?"
Beowulf remained silent.
"You’re not the only one who is going mad over her—I am too! Why do you keep making everything about you? What happened to US?" His fist slammed into the wall.
His chest ragged, he ruffled his hair. He waited for Beowulf’s response, but his wolf had retreated to the deepest corner of his mind.
"Coward. Always running away when there is a problem," Damon muttered under his breath. His hand twitched beside him.
His eyes darkened like a mighty storm before he resumed his walk. Alaric met him at the end, arms crossed.
"She still denies it?" Alaric asked, ignoring the look of doom on his face.
Damon didn’t answer.
Instead, he let out a long breath. "There’s something wrong about all this." He tapped his finger against his upper thigh.
"I’ve told you that already," Alaric muttered. "But you’re too deep in your anger to see it clearly."
"She’s the only one with access," Damon argued, his brows pinched. "And her scent was there."
Alaric looked at him pointedly. "Do you trust your instincts?"
Damon said nothing.
"Then ask yourself," Alaric said calmly, "would Ember really risk her life for a locket she doesn’t even understand?"
Damon stared ahead, jaw clenched.
"I’ve seen thieves. She’s not one of them," Alaric added. "Even if you broke her down to dust, she’d still look you in the eye and say she’s innocent. That girl... she’s got pride."
Damon’s face turned expressionless, as if his brain had just reset.
"I’ll investigate further," Alaric said. "But if this turns out to be someone else’s doing..."
"I’ll kill them," Damon cut in coldly.
Alaric gave a slow, knowing nod. "Then let’s find out who really took it."
......
(Ember POV)
Back in the cell, I curled up on the mattress, staring at the ceiling. Sleep was far from me. I had never felt more powerless. Not even the night I woke up in this strange world with no memories of how I got here.
This pain... this betrayal... this was something else.
And yet, underneath it all, I still felt something dangerous. Something terrifying. And that was hope.
Because somewhere deep down, I believed Damon wouldn’t stop until he found the truth. Not because I begged him. But because he needed to know—for his own sake.
The locket was more than just a possession to him. It was something sacred to him by the look of things.
And maybe... if I could figure out what that locket truly meant to him, I could prove my innocence.
