Chapter 39: Chapter 39 Heartless

"What do you mean her smell keeps changing? Werewolf’s scent only changes when they are pregnant or they are in heat." Alaric’s brows knitted in confusion.

"That is what I’m trying to figure out. She smells like a werewolf, but at the same time she doesn’t," Damon casually tucked his hands inside his pocket.

"Hmmm, that’s weird. But anyways, I must admit that she is very brilliant. Although the flood isn’t fully managed, the walls have helped to divert some of them away, reducing its impact."

"I’m supposed to have bought a very smart pet, this is proof that I must keep her closer to me," Damon said with a wide grin.

"Do you think she would stay, considering how she almost escaped, encountering the black witches?" Alaric furrowed his brows in disgust at the mention of the witches.

"She is too smart not to be considering escaping again, and that’s why I have placed a tracking bracelet on her. She can’t take it off. In other words, she is stuck with me."

"You really are heartless," Alaric dramatically flared his hand to his chest, his voice slightly pitched.

However, Damon ignored him. "And through her, we were able to stumble upon the witches’ lair. I could have gone after them, but I couldn’t leave the little troublemaker in the open. By the way, have you tracked the movement of the black witches?" he sighed, his cold face expressionless.

Their steps made the water splatter, their clothes already soaked wet. Alaric’s gaze turned a little serious. "I’ve not been able to track them. It was like they had disappeared into thin air..."

"They did, that’s why they are called witches," Damon deadpanned.

Alaric rolled his eyes inwardly in exhaustion. "I’ll try to track them." He paused, gauging at Damon’s unreadable expression. He scratched the back of his neck nervously, his lips pulsed into a thin line, as he was unsure if he should say it or not.

"You will be the one burning inside from keeping those words within you," Damon halted, before turning to face him.

Alaric sighed. He was sure he was going to get beaten for this, he had always had. "Are you thinking of taking Alpha Allison as your Luna?"

Damon’s eyes shut closed as if he was trying to contain his anger. "And why are you asking about that? Isn’t she the best female werewolf to rule beside me?"

Alaric sighed, his playful gaze disappearing from his face. "I know she’s good, in fact perfect for you, however you cannot."

At his word, a growl rumbled from within Damon’s chest. "Why not?"

Alaric paused, holding his breath. "I think you’ll get a second chance at finding a mate again..." Before he could finish his word, a punch on his face sent him flying, crashing against the shallow water.

A gasp choked out from his throat, as he could feel the air being punched out of his lungs. His eyes blurred for a second before it became clearer.

"For fuck’s sake, Damon," Alaric groaned.

"I’ve warned you not to mention the word mate in front of me," Damon leisurely strode to where he was sitting.

Alaric stood up in anger, his nose flaring in anger. "Aren’t you too pessimistic? Finding a mate is a rare and a special gift, look at me, I’ve been wishing and waiting for one..."

"For centuries," Damon interjected.

Alaric swallowed, before bitterly nodding his head. "Exactly, for centuries." His voice lowered. "However, your case is different, I believe there is still a chance for you..."

"Stop it, Alaric!"

"Do you really want to lose your chance of finding one because you have found your perfect Luna!"

"Watch your tone, Beta!" A low growl rumbled from Damon’s chest, his eyes turning into a silvery grey, his claws elongating.

However, Alaric’s eyes turned dark gold. "Alpha, you are not the only one hurting. It’s been centuries already. Why can’t you let go?"

Alaric’s words were like molten lava in Damon’s chest. In his fit of anger, Damon raised his hand to claw his face, but Alaric stood still, glaring at him to do his worst. Damon halted midway as his eyes flickered back to black.

He clenched his chest before punching Alaric at his nose. Alaric staggered back as he felt warm liquid streaming down his mouth. He groaned in pain as he attempted to touch it.

"You broke my nose!" he yelled, but all he was seeing was Damon’s back.

"At least that went better than before," he muttered under his breath. He flinched as he attempted to touch it again.

Meanwhile, after Damon left Alaric, he ran straight into the woods, as his wolf wanted to come out and vent out its anger.

.......

(Ember POV)

After I left Damon standing in the rain, I couldn’t help but wonder what my real purpose of transmigrating into this world was. Was it to be a breeder?

I raised my head towards the sky. I closed my eyes, letting the rain fall on my face. I wondered why I felt so attracted to him yet resistant, what was this?

I had thought that if I could get my own loyal squad, I could live a good life before escaping, but winning people’s hearts takes time, and I can’t afford to stay here and be a slave to a master and his mistress.

I moved my head down, before opening my eyes. A golden light burning from within the camp shone brightly in front of me. I’ve reached where I was supposed to change my clothes.

However, before I could move, I could hear the snapping of twigs from the woods at my left-hand side. The hairs on my body stood up at their ends, as bolts of shivers were sent flying down my spine.

"Who is there?" My voice trembled.

But there was no response. I scanned around cautiously, and I couldn’t see anyone or anything. The fear from my encounter with the witches was a big red alert for me to stay away from the woods.

Immediately, I turned, heading towards the camp, but my steps halted when I heard a thud against the ground. My breath hitched as I slowly turned around.
